Game is very fun personally

Biggest complaints are more so with skins being pricey and the battle pass progression system, but neither of those are the actual game so if you just play the game then its pretty good

I need to play it more and get to max level to truly cement my review, but so far I am honestly not feeling the game. Depending on if I invest more time, my review may change.

I've played various MMOs, with World of Warcraft being the most played, and so my review is more opinion based here.

So the combat I think is honestly pretty good for what it is. It flows pretty well and can be satisfying to use your defensive ability and mobility spells, but I feel like where it falls flat is the lack of variety as it stands. The game does not use traditional classes like World of Warcraft, and instead uses a weapon based system that is more similar to FFXIV. The main difference between them is your weapon in FFXIV is essentially what your class is like WoW, whereas this game it is a bit more varied (in theory) as you always have 2 weapons equipped at a time. What personally makes this lackluster to me is that each weapon only has a handful of abilities/spells and passives. I believe this in of itself wouldn't be a large issue if there was more variety in weapons, but as it stands on launch that isn't there either.

As of the launch of the game, there is only 7 weapons to choose from:
Sword & Shield
Greatsword
Daggers
Longbow
Crossbow
Staff
Wand & Tome

Each weapon, at least as I understand it, seems to be specifically tailored to a certain type of role, and while the dual weapon based system lets you sort of mix and match roles, such as taking GS and Daggers would be a pure melee DPS, or S&S and W&T could be a tank/healer hybrid, with the way the game is currently designed, some weapon combinations are genuinely just straight worse than others. This isn't necessarily an issue but with this being an MMO, your mileage may vary if you decide to play a weapon combo that is deemed by the community as bad.

I think with the way the game is designed currently, trying to go into the game blind and playing what appeals to you as a player is setting yourself up to fail for the most part unfortunately. In WoW, you can generally get away with different talent setups even if they are not optimal for damage, as gear as well as knowing your class and specialization. The game wants you to constantly be upgrading your gear VERY early on in the game for end game, and thus trying to play around with different weapons and playstyles will genuinely hurt your play experience later in the game.

Honestly my enjoyment of the game started and ended with the combat, as I find the rest of the game to be incredibly boring and dull.

As a fantasy MMORPG, the severe lack of playable races disappoints me. This is more of a personal thing, but honestly most MMOs do this way better even if they're also lacking. In this game your only option is playing as a human (could technically say elf as there is a pointy ear customization option but that's it), and this seems pretty odd as there are various other races that DO appear in the game that are staples of the fantasy genre. This isn't gonna be important to a good portion of people, but it's something that I look for in these kinds of games.

The story, from what I've played thus far, also feels pretty boring but I have not put enough time into the game to really give a real opinion on it. My BIGGEST gripe with the game is it repeating the events of a quest or cutscene YOU HAD JUST DONE via a narrator. If there is a setting to disable this, I have yet to find it but this is genuinely the worst part of the game for me as it is incredibly annoying.

I feel like if you like Korean MMOs, honestly you might enjoy this game. For me personally, the game lacks in every single regard besides combat from what I've played.

PEAK FICTION

Edit for real review (THIS WILL HAVE SPOILERS):

Sonic Frontiers is a great game, it's now even my favorite Sonic game beating out Sonic Generations. With that said, the game does fall short in some areas and may or may not affect your enjoyment.

Let's start with the pros:
-Open World controls are GREAT, rarely did I feel like I couldn't do something or get somewhere because I was fighting with the controls.

-Combat, while not as flashy as Devil May Cry, or as complicated as some other Hack-n-Slash games, does feel good to use and game DOES give you decent progression with getting new attacks.

-Enemies are generally extremely fair to fight. I can't think of a single enemy type that felt like it had too much health or super obnoxious mechanics. Some enemies can be annoying but that mostly came down to me being dumb rather than the game itself.

-Cyloop is a great and interesting addition to the gameplay with the different applications it has. From providing a knockup on some enemies to being used in puzzles to even letting you get infinite boost for a period of time. I sincerely hope this gets used in future games (assuming they do an open world/semi open world format again)

-The vast majority of the boss fights are my favorites in the series, the combination of how the fights play out visually combined with the music of the fights made me giddy the entirety of the fights.

-The story is pretty good, not 10/10 masterpiece writing but actually has the characters show CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT and not be dumb downed stereotypes that they have been for the past 10 years. Thank you Ian Flynn.

-Visually, I think the game looks great. There is a caveat to this which will be in the cons but the game looks great.

-MOST minigames (and I do mean MOST) are fine breaks from the general gameplay and don't overstay their welcome. There is also a caveat to this that will be in cons.

Before the cons, I'm gonna do some indifferences I had with some things in the game.

-Cyberspace levels are in general hit or miss in my opinion. Both in terms of gameplay or music. Some levels are very fun, and some of the songs are great as well but some levels are outright not fun to play for 1 reason or another and some of the songs aren't bad but feel more like background noise than anything else. The themes of the levels are also largely strange as there's really only 4 level themes (Those being Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary, and a more city and military theme similar to City Escape or Speed Highway but unique in its own right) and don't really do much for the game itself.

-The game isn't hard even on the hardest difficulty, this doesn't really mean much at all in the grand scheme of things but do keep it in mind

-Some later enemies in the game are largely just reskins of previous enemies, but most if not all have more attacks so they don't just feel like "the same enemy but he's red now and thus has more health"

Now for the cons:

-The first one you come across will be the Cyberspace controls. I praised the open world controls and feel bu Cyberspace feels off. I got used to it as time went on but Sonic just didn't feel exactly right. I get why it works different since open world gives you too much freedom in movement for confined levels and would work against you as well but it feels TOO stiff.

-The pop in. While this does not bother me largely at all, this WILL be a point of fault for many people. Many set pieces will just appear in the open world with no fade in whatsoever. As far as I could tell this only happened with the Sonicy level pieces and not enemies or the grass.

-The last island. Now don't get me wrong, the gameplay and everything is the same so it's not inherently the island itself but a combination of things. This will be HEAVY SPOILERS:

The final island wants you to do the same beats as the first 3, but the issue comes in with collecting the Sage hearts. For whatever reason you either need to collect EVERY heart on the island or at the very least the VAST majority to actually finish all the dialogue to progress to the final boss. This is where Big's fishing minigame came in, and why I haven't talked about it until now as it's both a pro and con. With the finishing, it allows you to purchase things like keys, gears, and that island's NPC token (hearts, medals, or wrenches) along with Lost Kocos and Attack/Defense seeds. You could very likely skip most of the open world grind by doing JUST the fishing, which is what I did for the final island with the hearts.

-The TRUE final boss. Hope you like the hacking bullet hell minigame. This is skippable by playing on Normal but is easily the worst final boss solely because it's not Sonic at all and this gameplay style only comes up in the later half of the game, and only about 3 times.

With all that said, I still firmly believe this is a solid 8.5/10, 9/10 if you don't count the optional true final boss.

Played this game with friends who told me to install cause I played a lot of For Honor and it has been NOTHING but headaches.

Making a character was buggy as hell, it would take me to the beginning of character creation multiple times for absolutely no reason and resetting my progress.

The game is TERRIBLY optimized from my experience. I have a Ryzen 9 and a 1070 and I was getting constant FPS drops on the absolute lowest settings. Along with this as I played the game more the game performed worse and worse, with textures and models taking forever to load in and occasionally all textures disappearing.

When playing the game controls felt unresponsive at times, with me requiring to press the same key multiple times sometimes for the input to actually go through.

My biggest gripe is however, is how their account system works and is why I'm even writing a review. I made a my.com account last night before playing, and it had me sign into it and everything. Despite the issues I made a decent amount of progress (multiple times actually as with how little info the game offers in terms of learning to use new weapons I thought I wouldn't be able to get a new weapon until level 15), but signing into the game now gave me a NEW account based off my steam account, which I am completely unable to sign out of. This means that if I want to play on the CORRECT account with my characters, I'd have to completely uninstall the steam version and install the standalone version.

This doesn't even address how I feel about the actual game, which is lukewarm at best.

The game reminds me a LOT of For Honor, for better or worse. I legitimately believe 1 on 1 combat in this game is absolutely awful feeling with how CC works in this game. From what I've played, some weapon classes have multiple forms of hard CC that sets themselves up to 100-0 you with little way for you to free yourself from it unless you have an ability that removes that specific CC. A lot of it comes from me being a new player, but it absolutely did not feel good when coming from For Honor (which has some similar mechanics) does the 1 on 1 combat MUCH better.

I'm also not a fan of the gearing system in the game, as it reminds me of WoW PvP. I don't feel like playing the game more should give you a purely statistical advantage in a pure PvP game. It feels absolutely awful fighting someone who's been playing for quite awhile and has good gear beat you even if they mess up just because your gear sucks. For Honor had this same issue at release and it was reworked later on.

For Honor is a game that is a great concept plagued with all sorts of issues.

This game went from being good with some glaring issues keeping it from being great, to a genuinely good game, to a game that is honestly just not fun. The balance in the game is generally sub par, with most of the cast in the game being mediocre or outright bad, along with some characters being insanely good for months (or even years) on end. Most playlists are dead besides Dominion or Duels, which isn't an issue if all you want to do is 1v1 opponents, but if you want to do any of the 4v4 gamemodes, there really isn't anything to choose from unless you want incredibly long load times. Something that is still somewhat prevalent since I last played is that laggy players aren't really punished for being laggy and don't get kicked out of a game unless their lag is basically being disconnected to begin with, and are more so rewarded with how the game handles lag by having their attacks come out faster on other peoples ends.

Something I'd like to bring up with a primarily multiplayer game such as this, is that the community (from my experience) is incredibly toxic. I can probably count the amount of times I've met actually nice players just looking to have a bit of fun. People will whine at you and berate you for doing just about anything, and many players will do anything they can to tilt others just because it's funny to them. The game can already be stressful on its own just because it's fairly competitive by nature, so the unneeded toxicity can make a less than fun game become miserable.

I think the way the game plays and the visual setting of it are really interesting, the game isn't exactly hard to play, but it does have a learning curve that is enjoyable to learn and get down a string of attacks successfully and outplay your opponents, but with all the issues I have with the game I just can't really recommend it. The game is like SFV or Tekken in a 1v1 setting and like League of Legends in a 4v4 setting, but with a fraction of the roster and no where near the depth that any of those games have.
