I'm only going to recommend playing NieR:Automata if you are looking for something to get you thinking and don't mind playing a bullet hell game in between.

This game asks us a lot of philosophical questions, the primary one being: if you have to make a line of android machine people to fight for and save the last of humanity from an invading robot army, do you prioritise combat efficiency or attempt to make them as attractive as possible?

NieR gives us a very clear answer to that philosophical question but the rest of the questions it leaves you with are a bit more nuanced.

A lot of people rave about this game and it's ending. My experience was a feeling that the ending wasn't actually that strong, but I also could not get it out of my head for several days. It certainly leaves a different impression compared to the end of many other titles but probably only going to give you that value if you play it blind.

What you need to know:
PC port is bad, if you don't have a controller you need to install a mod to properly play the hacking game (which becomes very frequent later in the game)

The game tells you there are 5 "endings" but really this is misleading, when you complete ending A there is still 2/3rd's of the game left with different game play and entirely new bits. You need to complete endings A,B,C,D,E before you can say you've really complete the game. After completing C, you get level select, when you get level select use it, don't start from mission one, you'll know where to go when you get there.

The general dialogue is often a bit poor, I think mainly as a result of being a translation. If you can't look past it then this can be a difficult game to play.

Play the game with the online services active, you can pickup power-ups off other player corpses which massively saves time needing to farm.

Buy power-up slots as early as you can, I didn't do this and got caught at a point where it was temporarily unavailable which made a boss fight take around 20 minutes when it probably could have been done in less than 5.

Game is released now and better than ever, probably the best game launched in the last decade. Pretty much the only game in the RPG genre with solid multiplayer support that actually lets you make meaningful decisions and play the story out in pretty much the way you want to do it.

If you even vague feel like this is the type of game for you then it is absolutely best in class, bring a friend to have the best experience but make sure you have an open schedule to play with them because this game is packed.

Had a duel where I the other guy cast a lazer at me, I cast a reflective shield, he blasts me with ice and freezes me, I break out of the freeze on low health, throw him back with water and created a wall to block damage while I started to heal, he teleports over despite low health starts attacking me with his sword, we start a brawl and just before I kill him he launches me back toward a team mate, surely now the battle is won and I am safe. Teammate launches fully charged rock attack at my face and kills me, enemy escapes on 5 health.

Imps have funny names 10/10
