Performance issues in town ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ suck but otherwise the game is so good I haven't been able to put it down. It's a shame, these quarter-assed PC ports need to come to an end it's ridiculous at this point. Otherwise stellar games performing like absolute garbage due to sheer incompetence by the devs or whoever handled the port.

It's frustrating as a Dragons Dogma fan anticipating this game for so long to have to deal with this. I'm still going to put Yes as recommended because despite the performance issue in Vernworth I am loving it. I have not had performance issues in other towns and the majority of game is spent in the wild where it runs very fluidly.

A work around for the performance in Vernworth if you have a 40 series card is the framegen mod, it made Vernworth performance go from painful to serviceable. If you don't have a 40 series card, have an older CPU (I have a 5800X3D), or are going to be frustrated by very bad performance in the main city I suggest waiting for a patch.

Starfield is a Bethesda game through and through: it's basically Fallout set in space but it is not a space sim. The space exploration part is limited to loading screens as the Creation Engine is famously very segmented as all Bethesda games have shared that segmented design. "Space" is a large area loaded above every planet or moon where you can take part in ship combat or interact with other ships and space stations but you cant actually travel from planetary orbit to planetary orbit without hitting the loading screens. Similarly to land on a planet you have to go through a loading screen.

If you can look past that expectation of a space sim and play it as another Bethesda RPG you will reap the rewards of its rich world-building and huge array of interesting quests and characters. The gun-play is also quite good, I was genuinely surprised at how good it is as actual combat has always been a bit of a weak point for Bethesda games.

I immediately got distracted by several of the large side quests that took me all over the place and spent many hours exploring as well as is Bethesda game tradition. Another Bethesda tradition is clunky AI and that is also true. I have had my fair share of NPC characters just floating off into space or bugging out in strange ways but compared to other Bethesda games it is by far the least buggy on launch.

Update:

Having finished the game I have a few additional notes:

Exploring planet/moon surfaces is a weak point in Starfield in part because of the procedural generation reducing the magical feeling of finding unique locations that tell their own stories the way you could in their previous games that used hand crafted worlds. There are very cool points of interest that you can procedurally come across on planets but the procedural part really reduces the magic. There are many hand crafted storylines tied to either something happening around a planet/moon or in a structure of some sort on the planet but unfortunately a lot of the structures you find will eventually repeat. So in search of these hand crafted unique things you may come across the same few types of locations that are exactly the same inside and outside.

The main story is also not really note worthy, the bulk of my enjoyment was doing the often stellar side/faction quests.

All and all I still think this is another great Bethesda game, not perfect by any means: the choice to use procedural generation was a weakness in design from the get go in my opinion and the main story could have been far better. Still I had a lot of fun playing it and I'm already looking forward to the DLC.
