The best Ubisoft game I have ever played.

Now that's what I call a modern reboot of a franchise! Changing everything to make what made the original games original and beloved in the first place to something that is little to almost not recognizable, Wait... It's not a reboot? this is God of War 4? Oh, man.

Ignoring the fact that this game barely has anything to do with the first three games, hell 6 even with the three prequels, this is honest to god high-quality AAA game that does come with the usual advantage and inconvenience of being a product from Sony's game studios.

This has probably been said a billion times by now but this game has wonderfully crafted cutscenes for the optimal cinematic father-and-son story experience, but is it truly what I wanted out of a God of War game? something that has been done to death in books, movies, games, and TV shows? Obviously not though it doesn't mean it's bad, far from it but it's just what I was looking up to damn it!

The story is just about a strong father having to overcome the obstacle in his journey with his wimpy son trying to be as good as him but it obviously doesn't work that easily. Yeah, it's not that interesting, if someone told me to watch a movie and this was the plot I'd instantly say "No thanks I have to play Final Fantasy XIII-2" but if someone told me "Ever heard about that movie of an Ex god going on a rampage killing all of the gods of mount Olympus to finally kill Zeus, his father, for his ultimate vengeance? ♥♥♥♥ yeah, I'd say yes because that's what God of War is all about, get what I'm sayin'?

But-but... you might say that story isn't everything and you are right! But-but... I say the gameplay isn't all that great...
Remember that part about Ubisoft? Yeah, I wasn't joking this is an Open World game with crafting mechanics for armor and upgrade materials and weapon upgrades and skill trees and, and, and! it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boring! Didn't mean to come out as rude but christ an unoriginal story and unoriginal gameplay? Do better, Sony!

Though just like with the story, it might be uninspired and unoriginal it doesn't change the fact that it was perfectly crafted, I might even be a bit too rude with the gameplay since all of the previous God of War games are kinda all just Devil May Cry clones.

The combat is decent but awful at the same time but I'll get to that later. In a casual way, the combat is honestly perfect I just think it's ruined with useless stats and crafting that just makes the game a complete bore, I don't want to spend half of my time upgrading my armor for +2 attacks! The game also tricks you into thinking the axe is the new cool Kratos weapon but at some point in the game, you get the Chaos Blades back so all ends well in the best of worlds because the axe gets really boring after a while and the Chaos Blades are really fun to use!

But the combat ultimately reeks once you get into the side content like the valkyrie quest lines, they are like ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Dark Souls bosses which behave unlike any other bosses in the game, and by that I mean they are really fast in a game with slow base combat... Yeah, it's not really fun...
I dislike them because Kratos's default speed is god awfully slow and he wasn't made for this kind of quick game of spam A to roll like Dark Souls. You could say I lack skills but I think that's just bad game design if you had fun dying over and over because Kratos can't handle fast button presses and starts doing anything but what you wanted to do that's your thing and I won't take it from you.

Most side quests in this game were uninteresting, they are either talk to this ghost and kill X of things or talk to the Dwarfs and go to X place to find X in an empty dungeon. Honestly, I found the dwarfs' quests to be the most fun because you can't get wrong with exploring a place in this game it's kinda fun but that's the end of it, you never meet any new NPCs or anything, just padded content.

Now, for the 100% we know this is a Ubisoft-like game so it obviously has the find 100 X hidden in the world for no real reward other than 2 XP and an achievement. Even if there was some fetch quest of useless crap it was ok and I did most of them during my normal walkthrough, but the worst part isn't here, it's in the stupid Niflheim place with its dumb randomly generated dungeon that serves no purpose other than wasting my time.

Conclusion for the side content, do the sidequests if you want to but they barely do anything for ya'
You can do the Valkyrie side quest, it's ok.
Do not do anything else post-game it's just padded content.

So did I like this game or not? I did! it was great! just not original in the slightest and the game keeps teasing you with stuff that never happens like Ragnarok, Thor, and Odin. We barely kill any gods in this game and I found it very disappointing. People told me that the story got a whole lot more interesting in God of War Ragnarok and brings back stuff of what happened in the old Trilogy and more god-killing QTEs! Can't wait to try it out.

/!\ This review of Final Fantasy X and not X-2 /!\

After 111 hours of playtime and all achievements completed I think this is it, it's finally it... I think this is the greatest turn-based RPG I have ever played, Ya?

Now before anyone gets startled by what I first said I'm talking about the gameplay and not the overall story, I think this is one of the most fun turn-based RPGs to play.

For the sake of getting this review organized, I'm gonna separate each main topic into multiple categories.

The story

Now here's a tough one, I honestly think in all of Final Fantasy X this is its weakest point but it's not as bad as it sounds. I think the way Final Fantasy X tells its story works well because it overall just feels like a pretty basic adventure tale but is filled with charming characters making the whole experience really chill. I think this word would be best to qualify most of Final Fantasy X, I think this game is really chill, it never really gets tense or anything like that it's just a very sweet tale that feels more like a romance story if anything. The characters all fit together since they all share a common goal and the only way to reach it is to work together but even though they have to work together they all happily do it without any hassle since in the end, they are all Yuna's guardians and their main goal is to protect her on her journey. I think the main end goal is alright it's just about defeating the big bad guy who terrorizes the world, though, of course, it's much more complicated than that with the twist the story provides. I think the story is enough to drive you to the end of the game without getting too much if you only care about the story, it's definitely not as novel as how Final Fantasy 7 was but X's story is still great nonetheless. Do I recommend the game for its story alone? Sure I think this story has a lot to appreciate and it mostly comes from the characters themselves. I think each of the characters feels unique enough, I mean at this point it's kind of a Final Fantasy trademark to have rememberable characters now. I do like Tidus even though it's Tidus and he's not really for everyone... I actually don't know who is supposed to relate to Tidus since usually game protagonists are supposed to be slightly relatable to but Tidus? But Tidus is just a fun character and I like him that way. Yuna is great she's just a lovable girl that only wants to make others happy even if she has to sacrifice herself in the process, I find it interesting that Yuna even though considered a "Secondary main character" most of the story rolls around her and isn't really about Tidus's story at all. They both have interesting arcs which rely on each other with both looking to be as great as their fathers. Wakka is honestly one of my favorite "Bro"
trope he's just really fun and has a really silly talking quirk that doesn't get annoying like most talking quirks. I love my little Wakka even though he's a tiny bit racist toward Al Bheds. I think Lulu and Kimahri are the most forgettable characters of the party, I think it's mostly because they don't really talk much. I feel like they kind of become irrelevant once Rikku and Auron join the party. Though I do not dislike them I think Lulu has a great relationship with Yuna making her more like her mother so it's fair if she's a little more serious than the others. But Kimahri I can't help but not care about him, unfortunately, he barely speaks and his only development is when his brothers attack him in Mt. Gagazet but other than that he's just the silent bodyguard. Rikku is fine, I think she could've been a lot better but the way they reintroduced her into the story felt way too rushed like she just instantly meets up with Tidus and the party and joins it with no issues, and then she acts as if she has always been part of the party I think it's kind of odd. But other than that she's just a sweet girl and I find her adorable even though she doesn't really bring anything to the story. And my personal favorite, Auron. God he's so badass the very first moment he appeared I knew he was the coolest, his design is so good and he actually matters in the plot he's cool! Though he's kind of just the average trope of a "mysterious guy that knows everything but only reveals important info at the end" which is more common than you may think.
Overall like I previously said the whole party and story are just very chill and they all work together, this game feels like a real adventure with friends and that's what a lot of Final Fantasy titles are but this one does it really well.

The graphics

Like I previously said I played the HD remaster so it definitely looks better than the original on PS2 but I think both have charm so the HD version doesn't really replace the original but it's still a way better experience. So based on the HD remaster graphics I think the game looks really nice, it really has that early 2000 vibes and I think this is the most Tetsuya Nomura art style ever. I don't think there's a lot to say about the graphics themselves other than some models definitely looks a bit dated but design wise this game rules.

The Gameplay

Here's the most important part of the game, the gameplay. I think Final Fantasy X has the Turn Based RPG gameplay I have ever played and I'll explain why it works so well. First of all, I think the difficulty is on point throughout the game it never gets too hard or too easy, you might get some random difficulty spikes during gimmick bosses but other than that most of the game is kind of a cakewalk. I think it works so well due to how some of the fights work especially in the early game which definitely inspired Final Fantasy XIII's combat, I'm talking about the puzzles combat where almost all characters have unique abilities to defeat each type of enemy. This might sound confusing if you haven't played the game but if you did you know what I'm talking about, for example, Auron is great at dealing damage to characters with high defense so you'll make him attack them, and Wakka has a better aim so he's gonna attack flying characters, Lulu can deal magic damage so she's gonna deal with element enemies and so on. I think the way this game makes use of all characters is wonderful especially when the party is filled with 7 characters most normal players just play with one main party but this game forces you to switch characters and it's just great. Overall the only two characters in the party that ends up useless are Rikku and Kimahri since Kimahri's main gimmick is to be able to work off other's ability but it quickly gets useless once I'll be talking about the skill tree, and Rikku's damage output is just too weak when you first get her so I didn't bother maxing her stats till the very end of the post-game, her only quirk towards enemies is that she can instantly kill Al Bhed robots with her steal attack which definitely comes in handy from time to time.
Begone basic RPG levels said Yoshinori Kitase and introduced the weird at first but really cool at the end type of leveling stats called the sphere grid. This is why I think Final Fantasy X has one of the best Turn Based RPG gameplay ever, it's the ability to freely edit your character's stats and pretty much lets you be whatever the hell you want on any character. With this system, any character can become Healer, Fast DPS, Tank, Magic damage dealer, and whatnot, completing the sphere grid for each character is no easy task though it requires insane post-game grinding but if you want 99,999 damage output on each character? Go for it!
As for the combat in general this game I personally think is as smooth as it can be and I never thought it was too awkward to navigate through menus or anything like that.

Cloud was supposed to be his living legacy but I don't remember seeing him doing 300+ repetitive missions.

Disclaimer: This is a review of Crisis Core itself and not how this Remaster is an improvement to the original game, I'll vaguely talk about it near the end of the review but by the time I wrote this I have not yet played the original on PSP.

Spoilers for the entire story of Crisis Core and Final Fantasy 7

Man, remember the backstory of Zack from the original Final Fantasy 7? Yeah me neither because he never had one other than the flashback when they introduce him and dies right after. I might be a bit too harsh on this one since we have the twist with Cloud being the nobody and Zack the hero so Cloud's story is actually Zacks but it still didn't make me care for him, if anything it just made me sad my boy Cloud was a loser.

But damn Crisis Core really delivers in the story department! Don't get me wrong though it's no masterpiece I just think it's a really fun backstory that feels more like fanfiction if anything and I really enjoyed it, I mean you can't go wrong with more Cloud, Sephiroth, and Aerith.

So yeah, I got nothing much to say about the story it's just fun so if that's what you were looking for by all means go for it!

Now is the time we talk about what seems to be a bit of an indecisive part of the game by the player base, the combat. For this review, I'll stick with the Crisis Core Reunion combat since the original is infamous for having tedious combat. From what I have been told the combat from the original has been massively improved in this Remaster though I'm not gonna give my word on it since I have no personal experience with the original game, but here's my personal opinion on the combat system.

If anything it feels like a lite version of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake combat and it's honestly very fun in a casual playthrough! But here's the catch, this game has a mission-based system similar to Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker with a ton of boring and useless missions that mostly just serves to grind and nothing else though the only difference here is that missions in Peace Walker served to advance the story but in Crisis Core they only exist to unlock very few features and grinding. What I'm getting at is that the combat system is fun but simplistic and when you have to complete all like 200+ missions? it gets really tedious and it's not even hard like most missions just feels like mashing buttons except the very last few ones which somewhat makes everything more interesting by forcing us to change our basic combat meta and just go for stats-breaking equipment and material which is kinda cool and really feels like a true Final Fantasy end game though the road to get there is boring as hell!

But hey that's just an issue for people interested in the post-game content, for a casual player it's great! just fun combat similar to FF7R!

But back on what I said about the game being mostly just completing boring missions, I know it's because this game originally was a PSP game and the game itself is already impressive for a handheld game in 2007 and it did more than enough to be a good PSP game content wise so filling the gaps with repetitive missions is fine. And we must not forget that this is a Remaster and not a Remake so yeah it's normal that we get the same thing we had from a 2007 game all it did was enhance the dated stuff but going as far as reworking the entire mission system would be like making a whole new game.

And here's why I wish it was a Remake and not a Remaster especially with the new Remake games getting their own story making it even more confusing on what is canon and what isn't! Is Crisis Core canon to the Remake or is it still just for the Original or is it for both? Guess we'll get to know that once Part 2 releases...

Talking about Remakes, this game received a massive graphic overall adapting the whole game with the art style of the Remakes making it again more confusing if it wants to be a Remake or a Remaster, but other than that it feels like a raw version of the Remake which is more than fine for a Remaster. I'd say my only issue would be the random pre-rendered cutscene and yes I know there's the pre-rendered cutscene that was taken straight from the original PSP game and just upscaled to oblivion making them look really weird especially when you can notice that it's upscaled and the art style clash between the Artstyle of the Remaster (Remake art style) and the art style used in the pre-rendered cutscenes of the PSP original which looks more like clips from the Advent Children movie if anything.
But I'm not here to complain about those since it's excusable, again this is a Remaster, not a Remake, and the pre-rendered cutscenes are usually pretty long and visually stunning so remaking them would take a lot of budgets, and yeah you get where I'm getting at. My issue is from the pre-rendered cutscenes from the remaster itself, like cutscenes using in-game moments but for some reason instead of... I don't know putting it in the damn GAME and letting it play in real time they just decided to not optimize that moment to be played in the game.

I know this sounds dumb and picky but I just don't understand why they can't just make them normal cutscenes most of them are just average movement and other things you'd find in an in-game cutscene. My only guess would be that it might just be for the game to run on Switch or just Square being lazy who the hell knows and care except me?

Yeah after ranting about pre-rendered cutscenes you know I'm out of things to talk about.

Oh, and I got no opinion on Zack's voice from the Remaster, as someone who never played the original I think he sounds alright I guess like it's not awful but he doesn't say Gongaga as good as the original that's for sure.

Verdict: Absolutely plays this if you love the original Final Fantasy 7 but I do not recommend this game if you haven't played the original first since it kinda just ruins most of the original's twist and character-building. I think playing this version over the original would be the better choice but I do not know myself and I do not recommend the 100% completion of this game it's dumb and tedious and not worth it.

So they finally made a sequel to Darkwatch?

After two full playthroughs on Normal and Evil difficulty, 22 hours of playtime, and about a million creatures of the night kicked in the ass I came to the conclusion that this will forever be 2022's hidden gem.

The way this game was designed feels like a massive copy/paste of all the things we liked and disliked in the Xbox 360/PS3 era of video games. This game is as fun as it gets and as linear as it can get, honestly, this game just feels as if Bioshock infinite and Darkwatch had a child and he was raised to be the most 2008 game ever.

The way the game is structured is along the lines of "Cutscene, walk forward in a linear stage and kill enemies, Cutscene" for about 16 stages. Unlike Final Fantasy 13 linearity is good for this type of game because the gameplay kicks ass and it just makes me want to kill more of these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ monsters!

Hell, honestly this game is a little too fun to play that's why the devs had to add stuff to ruin the pacing and also ruin most players' review scores. When I said that this game was structured like a game from 2008 I wasn't joking the level design is boring as hell with useless stupid puzzles that AAA games love oh so much. It also has all of the cliches AAA games use like walking between two tight walls or a small passage where the game automatically crouches and all you have to do is hold the joystick up and enjoy the realism and cinematical aspects of the game.

The thing I hate the most about this game is the useless puzzles which are just about pushing stone blocks and carts just to climb them and pull a switch. Games should just do what they are the best at and I get that they try to mix up some new gameplay elements to make the stage more "fun" to go through or more "memorable" but honestly it just makes me remember how much I find said puzzles to be a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ waste of time! You can't just make one of the greatest combat systems of 2022 and force us to do the dumb puzzles we want to kick some asses damn it!

To show how angry I am here's an example of a stupid puzzle design from this game.
Puzzle image 1 [imgur.com]
Puzzle image 2 [imgur.com]

In this puzzle, the cart not shown in the photo is on the left side by default, and most normal human beings would start the puzzle by climbing the cart and then flipping the switch on the left. Then the left part of the bridge lowers and you are forced to push the cart to the right to flip the right switch. It all sounds like a normal puzzle by now but here's the moment that pisses me off, why after flipping the right switch do I have to go back and push that damn cart again to get back to that damn left side again.

Why not just put the cart on the right side to avoid repetition in an already repetitive game? I know this all sounds like picky ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about basic-level design but it just makes me mad to force myself to do puzzles in an action game especially when said puzzles are the most simple thing on earth it's just a dumb waste of time! This isn't Uncharted this is Evil West! Games should just do what they do best like could you imagine if a Yakuza game randomly forced us to push some boxes in a specific order just for the sake of adding variety? If anything they would just make a cutscene out of that puzzle instead of forcing us to play it.

Here's one last example of a bad puzzle in this game, and this one really pissed me off because it's counter-intuitive and straight-up bad.
Puzzle image 3 [imgur.com]

This puzzle is about pushing pillars to form a bridge, simple right? And yeah it is just it's just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid. In the picture, you can see a totally crossable bridge by human standards but the devs thought otherwise since you can't cross it like that, the block on the bottom left cannot be crossed because the puzzle wasn't supposed to be done like that. The block on the top left is just here to access a secret chest so my plan was to just move that block to the top right once I get the chest but no you can't do it like that so I had to look up a video guide on how to do it and that's what you could call bad level design.

Now that I'm done with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about bad-level design, I'll go back to talking about the game. The story is overall OK it's good enough for an action-focused game and the cutscenes are fairly short so they didn't really bore me all too much. The characters are fine as well, I honestly wish it was overall a bit more over the top but it's fine as it is.

And the combat is excellent, it's pure fun and the control scheme needs some getting used to but once you do it's great. The game works with the good old skill tree which is fine with me I just don't like with how the skill points are attributed. It works with a level system that doesn't really explain itself, I'm guessing it's just killing enemies equals getting XP and you get enough XP in your first playthrough to get most of the important skills but even my second playthrough on the hardest difficulty in the game I still couldn't get to the max level and that means you have to play even more of this game to get to the max level. The skills themselves are mostly just combating skills and less "more health" making the combat system even more exciting when you unlock new cool abilities.

The game also has this cool thing where it introduces a new weapon or gimmick in almost every stage from about stage 1 to 12 to keep the player entertained.

The weapons get upgrades too but with the money found throughout the game and unlike the skills, I was able to get all weapons to upgrade on my second playthrough.

Honorable mentions would be the bosses, they are really fun to fight and they all require you to remember their pattern to beat them with no random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it's great. Though this game only has 4 bosses which I found to be a bit underwhelming.

The soundtrack is fine I guess I can't remember a single track from it but at least it wasn't bad.

Conclusion,
This is definitely one of the greatest games of 2022 but oh my god it's one of the blandest games of all time it just doesn't stick out at all and that's probably why I don't see anyone talking about it. I just hope we can get a sequel with better stages and the same and even better if possible gameplay to kick some ass again.

Well, this was really underwhelming...

Resident Evil 2 remake has great gameplay and visuals, and even if Resident Evil 3's gameplay is a bit outdated and rough it still had an excellent world-building! I loved exploring Racoon city and figuring out the simple but clever puzzles, so I thought how could they ♥♥♥♥ up a remake when they already have everything to make a great remake, yet Capcom somehow ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it up...

This game pretty much removes all of the quirky and silly identity the original version of 3 had and replaced it with this B movie with Marvel-tier dialogues and character interactions. Jill is the cliche action girl heroine with boring one-liners and Carlos had a complete redesign making him look better actually even though I loved his gay European accent in the original.

The game is pretty linear with random exploration moments with little to no puzzles making the game very boring. The way the "stages" are placed is really weird it feels like a string of random stages that were glued together to make some sort of plot to be more like the original but why do this in the first place when you can just follow the original game's story!

The story makes the game even more cliche with the B movie stuff, they tried to make some characters be more important while creating this fake ass relationship between the characters but it just doesn't work in a 6-hour game and awful dialogue.

The gameplay itself is fine, it's just more of the same as Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Though of course, I'll mention how good the game looks, Capcom never misses when they do a game with the RE:Engine. The cutscenes look gorgeous and you can finally admire Nemesis in glorious HD!

But graphics aren't everything, even if this game uses next-gen technology I was not scared or stressed even once. The original nailed the atmosphere while the Remake is just a good cinematical experience.

Encountering Nemesis in the original stressed me the hell out since it was a massive gamble to know if you would die or not, the remake is often just cool cutscenes.

Even if this game is boring as all hell, it's kinda like a DLC to Resident Evil 2 Remake. It's not bad but beware... It's Mid. Though definitely play the original first.
