While the gameplay is reasonably enjoyable, following the story of this game feels like a chore. Max Payne, (i.e the main protagonist who we're supposed to be identifying with and rooting for) starts out as a depressed alchoholic who hates his employers and basically has nothing to live for. Getting killed in this game almost seems like the best possible outcome, as the alternative is murdering lots of people who happen to be in Max Paynes way that particular day. It also seems like the only real difference between Max Payne and the "bad guys" he's shooting at is which way their guns are pointing. He has absolutely no moral high-ground whatsoever.

Gritty can be great, but you need at least one relatable character for it to work. This game has no such character.
