If an orange is called orange, why isn’t an apple call red?

Ah, actually until just a few centuries ago, there was no real word for that color between yellow and red These were refered to as varieties of yellow or red. That which we now call orange was simply red. Because the fruit 'orange' closely resembled that color, it was thus used for it. Orange became "orange", the fruit had long bore that name. Orange in Spanish is likewise the same for fruit and the color.

Apples have always been called apples, or pommes etc., enjoying their own names. Likewise red, rouge, scarlet, vermillion have long been applied to that color.
