I haven't played the previous games in Hearts of Iron series, so I can't compare whether it's better or worse than its predecessors, but this one definitely caught my eye.
If you're a fan of WWII-themed as well as strategy games, then you'll find it enjoyable to either re-live WWII moments and defeat Nazi Germany or completely re-shape the historical events the way you want yourself. After playing this game for 200+ hours I still enjoy creating different scenarios on the world stage and playing through them. The AI does from time to time act in a strange way, but it hasn't ruined my gaming experience.
The developers actively finetune the game when it comes to AI - also the latest DLCs have introduced several mechanics that make the game more enjoyable.
Another thing that needs mentioning is the score soundtrack - it's great! (Hats off to Andreas Waldetoft!) It does remind me a lot of soundtracks from movies like Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan and for sure I did enjoy those.
