CS:GO is an online competitive first person shooter and in my opinion one of the few good shooters on PC. I can tell you after playing tons of first person shooters, this is one of the few that I still find fun, engaging and overall entertaining to play. This game is perfect for if you're burnt out on first person shooters like CoD or Battlefield as this game has more depth to the weapons and game play that goes beyond aim and shoot.
It has a wealth of content, both official and consumer-created. There are more fun, casual modes such as Deathmatch, Arms Race (bootleg Gun Game) and of course Casual which is a casual approach of competitive Search and Destroy. Then there are team-based modes where communication is key such as Competitive which is Search and Destroy, Arms Race which is 2v2 on a smaller version of maps such as de_inferno and the most recent addition, Dangerzone which is a battle-royale. If thats not what you're into, theres a whole wealth of content made by the community hosted on the Steam Workshop and community servers. On community servers you can find fan-made modes such as Surf which is a timed platforming course and Deathrun where one person has access to an array of traps while the rest of the lobby have to avoid them while making it to the end of the course.

CS:GO has been constantly updated since 2012 and has managed to keep a player-base consisting of 300,000 people to 400,000 people playing every year. Its free, so theres no harm in trying the game out.
