FORM is a gorgeous game with some light fun puzzling mechanics. As a VR experience, it's top notch in terms of its presentation. I wish there was a "recommend with qualifications" because for as much as I liked it, this game is only about an hour long. That and the low replay value make this a great 1 hour experience, but not for $15.

Factorio is a game about designing a game you don't have to play. Automation is the key here, and you design a factory on a desolate planet to leave the game you're currently playing which at some point, if developed correctly, plays itself. It rewards ingenuity through sheer laziness, the hallmark of industrial civilization. Mining by hand takes too long, so you build a driller, which needs fuel, so you develop a system of automated feeding belt. You need other materials to make these, and the next thing you know it's 2 AM.

I have actually no idea if this game is any good. It's compelling and addictive, but I don't know if I would call it "good" or "fun". You have to be a very specific type of person to "get" this, and I'm definitely that person, but I'm not sure if I have it in me to go the distance with this one. I garnered an unhealthy obsession with this title for more than 50 hours, and I left it mainly because I felt like I was playing but not progressing very far. It will draw you in like few other titles, and hours will melt away, for better or worse. You can spend hours chasing a problem to its source and then forget what you were originally trying to do.

What the gameplay loop boils down to here is to solve a continually escalating series of problems you create with innovative solutions you design. This is a puzzle game at its core: how do you go from coal miner with a pickaxe to developing a rocket engine; the industrial revolution in microcosm. It's infuriating, challenging, time-consuming, and kind of brilliant.

PROS:
- Fair escalation of difficulty based on your own pace
- Mentally challenging puzzles
- Fascinating exploration of automation mechanics
- Sandbox world allows experimentation
- Extremely moddable (and recommended)

Cons:
- Needs a better tutorial, especially for rails, circuits, and blueprints.
- Once you figure out an optimal solution you like, gameplay can become a tech tree grind
- Fiddly, annoying interface at times
- Overly complicated tech trees that don't show progression very well.
- Difficult to correct crtical errors early in game
- Defense from enemy mobs is a chore
- Large maps are annoying to navigate on foot

A colossal misfire. It's like they sat down at a table at Bethesda and said:

Todd Howard: (with boyish charm) "Hey, what's everything that makes Fallout special?"

Employee #1: "Strong story-driven exploration, memorable characters, creative solutions to problems, an emphasis on personal roleplaying, surprising narrative twists, and terrible FPS gunplay."

Todd Howard: "Okay, take that ALL OUT and make gunplay pretty okay, but that's the only thing we're going to improve. Also, we're going to keep using the same terrible, stiff, robotic character animation, dated engine, game-breaking bugs, and garbage interface. Before I forget, we're also going to ditch the dialogue system for vague, single word responses because we think our audience is an idiot. Also, our main character is going to talk for some reason. Oh, and you can't be really evil because that makes us feel icky and we really want to make a mediocre shooter with RPG elements tacked on for console kids. Slap on some grindy base-building because f*ck you in the face. Make everything mediocre!"

Employee #2: "Can we still make it look like it's 3-5 years behind every other game graphics-wise?"

Todd Howard: "Duh."

One of the finest stealth actions games ever made. Story takes place in an alternate steampunk universe dominated by plague, death, and the supernatural. One of my main complaints about stealth games is their slow pace and often unforgiving trial/error gameplay. Dishonored solves this with a simple-but-genius mechanic of "Blink", an instant short range teleport, and piles on a series of fun abilities with unique situational uses. The open-level game design allows for multiple solutions to combat or story resolutions. A deep, dynamic game that tests your skill and moral compass. My only central complaint would be the story. Characters are stock tropes, and you can see the twists and turns coming a mile off, and it's a disservice to build such a lovely, grim dystopia and populate it with such a drab story. The few good character moments (mostly from supporting characters) are too few and far between.

PROS:
- Diverse set of stealth / action mechanics
- All stealth abilities feel useful, powerful, and synergize well. Fun to set up Rube Goldberg solutions.
- Strong sense of world through gameplay / discovered lore. A highlight.
- All missions have a non-lethal outcome, which affects world depending on choices
- Levels have open concept with multiple routes
- Can turn off individual HUD elements as desired! A welcome addition.

CONS:
- Default HUD is cluttered and too hand-holdy. Can adjust, though.
- Repetitive sound effects from powers get old fast.
- Obvious and not terribly interesting revenge-style story. A yawn.
- Can get overpowered easily in mid-game with runes
- Hand to hand combat is bland and all combat abilities worthless, thankfully discouraged

My contender for GOTY for 2016 (so far):

A rich, haunting game in an atmosphere of pure dread, fear, and surreal horror. What you expected from the same people of Limbo. Just as long as it needs to be, around 3-4 hours, with several of the mechanics worthy of their own full-fledged puzzle game, and it keeps introducing new ideas. I was never bored or annoyed (save one water section that slows to a crawl). A super tight control scheme and animation that is staggering in its subtlety and personality. The third act turn is strange, horrific, and completely unexpected.

PROS:
- Amazing atmosphere
- Tight, simple 2 button control scheme
- No HUD, tutorials, or handholding, storytelling through gameplay
- Puzzle mechanics are fascinating

CONS:
- Short length may turn people off (3-4 hours)
- Ambiguous, sudden ending
- There's a water level that borders on tedious

Highest recommendation.

This is one of the best game remakes I've ever played. I'm hooked. It's fixed everything that held me back from loving the original:

- Endlessly replayable content. Every run is different, unique, and surprising.
- Incredibly tight, rebindable controls for K+M and controllers. Controller support changes this game entirely.
- Amazingly grotesque pixel art. H.R. Giger meets Walt Disney.
- A shocking variety of enemies and items.
- Gameplay that evolves and grows as you get better at the game, providing a great sense of player progression.

One of the few downsides I noticed is this game requires homework to really enjoy it. You'll be spending a lot of time on runthroughs scrolling through the Rebirth wiki until you memorize items. The challenges are also hit and miss, with some being fun experiments, and the others being slogs to unlock items.

Overall, an impeccably polished and designed game so good you need to buy it now. Sell blood plasma or your dog or whatever. Make it happen.
