I'd like to start this review by first addressing the FAQs when going into an MMORPG.

1. Is the game grind intensive?
Not at all. Until the very end of the story you are always progressing and even in the end game you find yourself having more fun as you're not necessarily playing for xp, but you're playing for a shot at unique items.

2. Is it pay to win?
Grinding Gear Games is not at all what I'd have originally expected from a company making an MMO that I'd never heard of before. To my surprise, the only purchasables are weapon effects and extra bank space. It seems as though bank space is core in this game, however, and you may have to spend a bit if you plan on getting the most out of the game. With "premium stash tabs" you can list items for sale on poe.trade 's search engine. Quite magnificent, honestly.

3. Replayability factor?
HUGE. This game will leave you wanting to try out many different "builds" throughout your playing experience. The only downside to the replayability of this game is the harsh learning curve that comes with it, and what has been mocked by players since beta as a "skill forest" as opposed to a skill tree.

4. Is it unique?
Very. This game in broad terms is comparable to other MMOs such as Diablo, but time and time again I see new players praising this as "what Diablo III should have been." There are seven classes to choose from, each with their own story of why they were exiled and a fitting attitude throughout the game. The only difference between them is their starting location on the skill tree, and miniscule base stats. Skills are granted through Skill Gems, and any class can equip anything as long as they meet the stat requirements. Skills can be customized through "linked sockets" in gear in which the Gems are connected to other Support Gems, modifying anything from their amount of projectiles, mana cost, damage type to how they are cast.

As a child, I'd always been into RPGs, the first I had played being Maplestory. Nexon has exposed me to capitalistic ideals, and you can guess how happy I was to find a much more fun game that isn't nearly as pay to win.

If you're going to try Path of Exile, which I'd highly recommend, here are the basics you'd probably want to know:
1. Your first personal build will not work. Your first playthrough can get you some currency (very unique by the way, all currency is an "orb" that is given value by its rarity and also the fact that it has a use in modifying items) for your next character.
2. If you want to succeed, you'll have to commit some time to researching a fun and good build on the forums or YouTube. Later on you'll understand enough to be able to theorycraft your own build.
3. Read tooltips carefully. If you want an "increased projectile damage" Support Gem to work, make sure that the Skill Gem it's linked to has the modifier "Projectile."
4. Going with #3, "more" is different from "increased," know the difference.
5. If you want to know the value of an item, check it on poe.trade. If you have a brief question, look it up on google. Global chat will troll you.

I hope that my review and tips have helped you decide if you want to start playing Path of Exile or not, and if you choose to I hope that I have given you useful advice. I hope you can enjoy the game as much as I have.
