Straight up: This may be my favourite game of 2021.

It's not often I wake up with that electric feeling of being excited to play a game - and that game was Death's Door.
The combat, to me, was simple, but simply flawless: It teaches you the restraints of the system but also lets you quickly grasp that possibilities of it - and that's all I want frankly. Only two games have ever given me a physical shiver response to combat gameplay - where you die plenty of times but you can feel yourself getting better at it and every fight is for your life.
... also I'm a sucker for dodge rolls and grappling hooks :D

Death's Door is instantly charming, has simple but likeable puzzles and incredibly fun combat sequences.
The premise & the world are excellent, the secrets are very satisfying to uncover, and I did not put it down until I finished it.
Rarely is there also a game where I come back for a second playthrough, but I'll be doing that for this.
Rarely is there also a game where I buy the soundtrack and listen to it
The play length is also nice - while anything extra would be great (more of something delicious) the game was satisfying and didn't overstay a welcome. There wasn't any part of the game I found to be a slog and the pacing was really good all the way until it's conclusion.

If you like Zelda, don't want a game to become your life for months and you like birbs - get this.

I've been in the mood for a management game for what feels like years. I've always thought it was a craving for a real time strategy game like Red Alert 2 or Rise of Legends - but realised what I liked about it was the planning of the building of things; not the combat/directing troops.

Oxygen Not Included came up in my recommended a few weeks ago and I saw it was by Klei so I just gave it a shot - noting that I honestly did not enjoy Don't Starve or Don't Starve Together; I found the gathering of materials/surviving tedious and it didn't give me much of a drive to keep playing.

This game however has me completely hooked. I've clocked up triple digit hours in just two weeks and while I don't think I'm very good at it - I immensely enjoyed the satisfaction of discovering mechanics/sections of the research tree slowly and hitting reset each time to take advantage of the new knowledge. As well as the exploration outside the colony and how I could optimise runs to get outside faster and safer.

There's something just incredibly satisfying giving orders to dupes, watching them work and watching your base run itself.
... and I'm still nowhere near launching a rocket! So I still haven't played the DLC.

Get this if you want a souped up management sim with a lovely visual style that somehow manages to be relaxing but has just enough tension to keep you interested for hours.

Played a demo of the game @ PAX Aus & bought a key - it's pretty good! It definitely goes after and captures that feeling of zen when you're just reacting with the mechanics of the game. Lovely

A surprising discovery from the Summer Sale! It's fun, engaging & the tower defense has never been quite so satisfying (: Highly recommended for both solo & co-op (If you don't have friends, get some!)
