I have to admit that so far the only games in the franchise I've played are New Vegas and Fallout 4 so I can't make a judgement comparing all of the games and my limited knowledge of other entries in the franchise are based around lore videos. However judging by the time I spent playing it I feel comfortable reviewing it, I enjoyed playing this RPG and greatly recommend it, putting it in the wise words of your favourite ghoul cowgirl Beatrix "Time you enjoyed wasting isn't wasted time".
Considering the limitations Obsidian was facing the game might sometimes hint at cut content and rushed replacements which is a little sad, however what Obsidian managed to produce is still one gem of an RPG...your character, the "Courier" was shot in the head..you can make your own head canons..was he/she a good person? Maybe someone with a mercenary mentality? Maybe that 9mm blew some fuses and now you're a deranged cannibal? Whatever, the Mojave is yours to roam and influence.
It is true that the gameplay mechanics might be smoother (for example gunplay) in Fallout 4 but it isn't entirely fair to use this point as a drawback considering the year and the limitations, after all..this is a RPG not a pure shooter..plus, it still isn't as bad as some people might make it seem.
Just remember, as The Courier, you are a wild card in the grand game of chess the different factions are playing and the game was rigged from the start.

At the launch sale price, I have to say it's a great game to add to the colection if you love turn based/tactical games.

For the more serious longterm XCOM fans, other reviews have already stated this many times before mine: This is a spinoff title and feels more like an exploration of concepts to be used or not to if XCOM 3 is coming.
If you always played the old XCOM's or even the modernised ones on the worst odds ( seriousely, is this somekind of S&M thing? ) you probably won't be satisfied with this title if you search for that kind of odds.
Another big negative for some people might be the cheesy dialogs between the squadmembers ( keep in mind many of them are combatants from both sides of the events prior to this coexistance ).Personally, I didn't find it to be "insulting to the franchise", if I had to point out a flaw in those dialogs, it would rather be the fact that the aliens' voices sound like humans most of the time.

That's not really a bad thing, in the other XCOM games, you play as a bunch of unprepared humans that ( if they don't get turned into Chryssalid zombies or the floor for a Mouton to step on ) survive against the odds to become battle hardened veterans..and even then they can just get taken away by some XCOM 95% shenanigans or a careless move.
In this game, you play as both humans and the aliens that kicked your ass so many times. Finally you get to use the same tricks as the enemy..yes, it makes it easier...but that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable..after all, we have to admit that sometimes it just gets too frustrating when you always have to be the normies who get killed in instants while fighting outmanned and outgunned battles against machines and creatures that just won't stay down ( altough I can't argue it feels amazingly satisfying to prove those aliens wrong when something goes flawless ).

There are some new concepts that are quite nice, such as..

Breaching: Remember how you stalked through XCOM EU and XCOM 2's wide maps, ambushing an enemy patrol and hoping you wouldn't trigger too many patrols at once?

Since you are now in comand of a kind of post-war XCOM branch in the authorities of City 31, you get to breach locations and pick off some targets..or weaken a bunch of them! As the game trailer explains, no in this phase you never take down a whole room..what would be the fun in that? After the breach comes the real turn based battle!
Being a fan of Breach & Clear ( atleast the 1st non-zombie apocalypse one ) and Doorkickers, I really enjoyed this mechanic and the interior battles.
Of course, this would depend on what setting this would be executed in..it would be rather weird in some of the XCOM EU and XCOM 2 scenarios..but on another hand, it could be nice to see this breach feature reapear in further instalments, imagine if you could have busted into the downed UFO's or the ADVENT facilities with a breach phase!

Fighting on even odds! : This is more of a guilty pleasure, I do enjoy the other XCOM games, but I really loved it to be fighting on even odds ( actually it's stacked in our favor but shhhh we don't talk about that ), finally the enemy won't just bamboozle you all the time with superior abilities topped off by the fact it's a gigantic army with reinforcements, in this game, it more feels like your squad has superior abilities, altough some are quite similar between you and the enemy..personally, I think it's a nice balance altough hardcore veteran fans that played since day 1 of the old XCOM games probably disagree,

The battle timeline: This is a little offputting at first if you never played any other turn based games then the XCOM ones..but if you're a regular to turn based games, you probably encountered a timeline in some other game too and know what is what.
Considering the more compact battles and quickened up pace ( seriously, instead of cowering miles away with overwatch and hoping your whole fireteam doesn't miss and spend all their shots on the 1st incoming enemy, in this title you will actually be able to push on the offencive quite more often instead of cowering, you can take a LOT more then 2 shots, specially later into the game with a health regeneration armor extra and the upgraded armor ) I think it's quite nice and gives a little extra depth to the battle and even some guidance, atleast now you know which of the many enemies to strategize about first.

Well, I don't know what else to say.
The game is not the XCOM 3 you are waiting for, it's not the masochistic experience you're waiting for, but it's a nice game in the franchise if you want to take a breather from being on the receiving end of the misery odds.

If you enjoy turn based combat games in the line of XCOM,you're bount to like this game.
Of course,it's still a work in progress and you'll see it as you play but it's one worth supporting specially if you enjoy the type of games I mentioned earlier.
As of now,the combat and navigation are mostly solid and the story is coming up.
There are only a few flaws that I'd hope would be fixed (or maybe just things that I missed):

-I seem to have a problem with the game screen being cut/zoomed in too much.I've tried playing around with the resolution and yes..the screen changes as you would expect but it's still cut, most of the time this isn't much of a big deal but when I wanted to try the survival mode I couldn't see the character profile nor choose the right side of their perks.

-Once I had two soldiers to fall in combat. At the end of the mission one of them was gone permanently but the other one was still there, could this be some kind of randomised chance in which the soldier may recover or die permanently or was this a bug? (At least the gear of the fallen soldier was given back to me,it's always a good thing to have that back).

-I've noticed that when a grenade launcher misses, the grenade remains propelled until it blows up somewhere out of the walkable map.

Conclusion: For a work in progress, this small game is a nice take on the XCOM'esque games,With some support it could grow into something great.
(Note that I bought it on a sale, even if I approve supporting I think the sale price was a fair one)
