In many ways the best Elder Scrolls, and in some ways rather bad.
Short bullet points:
  • The magic and enchanting system gives the player many intersting ways to build their character and roleplay, which is good.
  • The NPCs are rather static. They stand in place all the time and do not have the routines from later Elder Scrolls games, which is bad.
  • Loot you find in the world is NOT leveled. This means you can find the best weapons and armor in the game very early if you know where to go / stumble across it accidentally. This is both good and bad, as it allows for exploration to be rewarding, but also risks breaking item progression.
  • The main quest expects you to learn about the world around you and your place in it. The world is the most immersive from all the Elder Scrolls games. This is good.
  • Most NPCs can be killed without affecting quests, so the player is very free to solve problems their own way. Some NPCs are marked "essential" meaning they are important for quests, but the player is free to kill those as well. The game informs you that you've done something that will mess up the thread of fate, and prompts you to reload a save, or continue in this "doomed world" you've created. This is good.

Often new players are put off by the lack of quest markers and compass, and the fact that the combat doesn't have very much feedback -> this is true, but if you take your time to learn the combat mechanics, the combat is rather simple and rewarding.
