Only Up! is an addictive platformer where you start at ground level and climb up! The very casual and relaxing gameplay mixed with tense and anxiety inducing moments make for a unique and fun experience as you progress to the top. I found out about this game from speedrunning videos on Youtube and realized I had to give this a try. I’m so glad that I did. There were a few parts of the map that I had trouble platforming, but the challenge made me keep moving forward….or up! This was a super fun game that took me an afternoon to beat. As an achievement hunter, I’d love to see more achievements added for collecting items on your way up, for beating the game within a certain time, or beating the game multiple times! Any of those would be cool. Overall, I really loved my time with Only Up! and I look forward to future updates and possibly new content!

I hadn’t heard about 9 Years of Shadows until just a few days before launch, so I was really hyped when I saw this. I’m playing more metroidvania style games this year, and I’m so glad that I gave this one a try. This game was not without its flaws, but overall, I really enjoyed the core experience and the awesome features that were to offer. The overall plot is about a noble warrior woman who is on a quest to venture into a mysterious robotic fortress and destroy the corruption coming from there. Sounds cool right?!

Pros:
Art Style – this is where 9 Years of Shadows really shines. After the beginning grey intro scene, you are presented with a vibrant and colorful world. You can tell this was a huge focus for the dev team and they delivered big time. In my opinion, the different areas were all beautiful to look at and different enough to help me remember each zone vividly.

Atmosphere – I personally loved the story and feel of the world around you as you progressed through the game. The small cutscenes when traveling through the elevator to a new zone were a nice touch. The atmosphere really went hand in hand with the art style which made the gameplay of this game feel awesome.

Music – the music is absolutely phenomenal. It grabbed my attention right away and just added to the overall experience of traversing Talos. I’m a huge fan of video game music so I definitely loved this part of 9YoS.

Gameplay – there is a lot to cover in gameplay! Combat and game controls feel great. 9 Years of Shadows has a unique combat style that intrigued me from the start. It took me a little to get use to how the main character’s shields and mana were combined. Once the pool of mana was depleted, a timing event occurs on screen and allows you to refill your bar back up. If your pool of mana is depleted and you take a hit, you lose an armor point (which you upgrade your number of armor points during the game). After I mastered this, combat felt super fluid and I almost felt unstoppable. Your sidekick (Apino) has an ability that drains your mana pool but can definitely be useful to traverse the world or refill your mana pool. Another aspect of gameplay are Europa’s (main character’s) armor sets. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the ability to switch between them based on the area you’re in, and upgrade them individually was super sick. Combat may seem pretty basic as far as different attacks go, but I think that is a positive! Like I said before, you can increase your armor and mana by collecting upgrades throughout the world, combined with coins that you get from killing enemies, then visiting the blacksmith. Lastly, questing is pretty straightforward in 9YoS but overall, I felt it was great addition to the game that helped players actually seek out optional bosses. The musicians were an awesome hub area to check progress of your character and pull the story full circle with how much progress you have made in Talos. Bosses were unique and there were quite a few of them! Some more challenging than others, but overall, I didn’t have a hard time progressing through them.

Cons:
Crashes – after the patches and updates I have heard that the crashes have gotten better, but on launch day I had quite a few crashes. After certain boss fights, while traversing the map, when trying to save…there were quite a few different scenarios where my game crashed to desktop. I understand it is hard to optimize a game for PC, and I’m super grateful they are working even harder to make the game flawless in performance. I don’t know if all the bugs causing crashes are fixed, but in my experience of playing the game right after release, I had to replay areas because I hadn’t saved for a long time or even replay full boss fights. Just a thing to keep in mind!

Locked Achievements – Being an achievement hunter, I was losing my mind when achievements weren't unlocking for me after my first full playthrough. Haha. They should all be fixed now so this isn’t really a negative anymore, but for some reason a few boss achievements didn’t pop for me on my first playthrough, as well as some collectable/sidequest achievements. That’s kind of why I put my review of this game off because I couldn’t 100% it until some of the achievements were fixed. All good now!

Overall, 9 Years of Shadows is a super fun metroidvania at a great price. The devs didn’t try to over innovate, they created a solid experience for players to bite their teeth into. I enjoyed my experience with the game. Newer players to the metroidvania genre will probably love this game while veterans may feel like they want more from it. I thought this was a solid title and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Donut Dodo is an arcade 2D platformer that takes you back to the NES days of glory! I love everything about this game and I wish there were more games like this on steam. There are 5 single-screen levels to conquer plus a unique bonus stage to help give extra points toward extra lives. The soundtrack reminds me of the familiar 1980s style games that I know and love. To progress through the achievements, you are forced to “get good” and learn the paths of the enemies and the layout/design of the levels. After I beat the game the first time is when the difficulty really ramped up, forcing me to work through the mechanics of each level even faster than before with more enemies. The leaderboards are a cool feature to have as well. Overall, Donut Dodo is an extremely fun time and I think Pixel Games did a phenomenal job at bringing this retro style game to life!

The Bible is exactly what you would expect it to be. The menus and pages work great, and I’m glad someone finally added a “game” like this to steam! I’ve usually read the Bible through an app on my phone, and being an achievement hunter, it is nice to have the option to collect the achievements by reading through each book on steam. If you enjoy collecting achievements and want to add this to your list of perfect games, it can easily be done by fast skipping through all the text as well. A nice feature that they have added is the quizzes! There are quite a few testing your knowledge. You can look up a guide that will help with the answers because the quizzes can be quite challenging! Overall, this “game” does what you think it would do, and even more. The different versions are a nice touch, and hopefully there are more quizzes added in the future! I’m glad that this is finally on steam!

Great puzzle game! I'm a huge fan of the puzzle game genre, as I play through a ton of them alongside one of my best friends on our game nights. Doors: Paradox looks amazing and the mechanics feel solid as you go through the different levels finding the gems and items required to unlock the next door. Here is a list some of my favorite things about this game!

Pros
The Visual Art Style – I really loved how awesome all the different levels were designed, the themes really made the game fun and the atmosphere around you really gives you a sense of a new dimension with each level.
Music & Sound Effects – the dev team nailed the sound effects, and the music is very nice and adds immersion as you solve the puzzles in different environments.
Gameplay – the puzzles were really not super challenging, but the design and feel of this game makes it enjoyable to play through. There were a few levels that required some extra thought but this game shines as a casual puzzle game that is fun to play and takes your mind off other things! Each level is beautiful to look at and it is enjoyable to solve each unique one.

Cons
None - I’m really looking forward to the next game! I really enjoy puzzle games and it was a delight to 100%.

The next game “Boxes: Lost Fragments” can’t come soon enough! Definitely picking it up as soon as I can. If you’re into these types of puzzle games and/or an achievement hunter, then this is definitely a must have.

This game was on my to-play list for a long time. Last night I gave it a try and I was immediately hooked. Before I knew it, I had been playing for two and a half hours. The career mode made me want to keep climbing the ladder to the number one spot. I just 100% 80’s Overdrive after about seven hours of gametime. Overall, I loved my whole experience with this game. The music was awesome and went great with the beautiful visual art style of the game. The gameplay was super fun and engaging. There are mission objectives to complete during some races as you climb higher on the career ladder, there is the task of managing your fuel and damage meters during and after the race, and there’s also the task of managing the total amount of money you have for upgrades to your car and for entry fees to all the races. I love the Time attack game mode and the racing track editor that gives you the ability to create your own track, with achievements tied to both of those modes too. Now it’s time throw on some 80’s music and hop into my car to go for a drive….if only I had a Lamborghini Countach!

I wanted to play through this game before Deliver Us Mars comes out in a few days, and all I can say is…. wow. I kind of knew going into this game that I would enjoy it because of the sci-fi single player setting, but I did not expect to get captured by the story as much as I did. By the end of the game, I felt like I was ready to keep going and see what’s next. Thankfully, the next game comes out really soon so I don’t have to wait long. Really enjoyed the puzzles, mini-games, and all the fun achievements. I picked up Deliver Us The Moon on this past steam winter sale, but I’ll be buying Deliver Us Mars on day one. Great game and great soundtrack.

Hands down one of my favorite games of the year. Wonderful souls-like that borrowed ideas from other titles and put its own twist on them. Had a feeling going into this game that I would like it, but I didn’t expect to be craving more at the end. After the last boss and grinding up to level 50 for the achievement, I felt like I finally mastered the combat and feel. This title was an awesome one to 100%, but it wasn’t necessarily a cake walk. A few bosses really pushed me to learn their move set. Highly recommend to Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Sekiro fans. It feels great to play an indie game that is just fun and isn’t trying to be the next big thing. I picked up this game for around $18 and I definitely got my money’s worth. In parts you can tell this game didn’t have the same budget as AAA games but it was made by a handful of people, and as a small studio they did an incredible job. I’ll break down my review based on things that I really liked about my experience with Thymesia and things I would love to see in the next game (whether that’s a sequel or new installment).
Things I enjoyed:
+ Combat – parrying was amazing when you get the hang of it, the wound mechanic is awesome with the white health bar vs green, and the plague weapons were sick, also it was fun being able to switch up my talents depending on who/what I was fighting or if I wanted to try a different playstyle
+ Atmosphere - the different areas felt really good and fit the tone of the game
+ Music - soundtrack is solid, boss music especially
+ Bosses - especially first boss and last boss, but the side missions have great fights as well
Improvements for the next:
+ More Content – maybe one or two more areas
+ Voiced Characters – just a nice addition to add even more connection to characters
Overall, Thymesia is definitely a must have if you enjoy these types of games. They pulled it off and made a quality experience that leaves you ready for more, which is a good feeling to have.

I would buy this game over and over. Love the souls franchise and definitely love the improvements made in this version of the game! Had a blast playing it again, experiencing all the game has to offer and earning all the achievements along the way. I recommend picking this game up if you've never experienced the original dark souls, or if you want to come back and do another playthrough after spending countless hours in the newer games. After putting around 45+ hours into this version of the game, it is hard to go back to the original. Some people do not think this remaster is worth their money but it all depends on your situation. I've definitely gotten my moneys worth!
