Takes the DS2 design philosophy and just spams weak enemies to make a more frustrating than challenging experience. The world is wonderfully designed and is quite beautiful, but the fights with regular enemies and most bosses are just there to be irritating. Sister Freide is an amazing boss fight and makes the DLC almost worth it just for that, and it hugely expands the lore of the Dark Souls story (combines well with Ringed City DLC), but overall it was a mild experience for Dark Souls.

Playing with no servers up anymore is a bit of a lonely experience, but the game is still absolutely fantastic. Easily the most polished of the Dark Souls games with some memorable areas and brutal bosses.

FromSoft seem to have an odd tradition of having better bosses in their DLC than the main game and the Ringed City is no exception. The whole journey from the Dreg Heap all the way through the ringed city is a fantastic challenge where no area feels just thrown together. Ashes of Ariandel was guilty for this but this DLC rarely has areas that feel more frustrating than difficult. The section in the Dreg Heap with the Angels is a bit of a slog and relies on dodge roll spam but it's thankfully quite short and long forgotten once you get past that area.

The bosses featured are some of the best FromSoft have ever done, Darkeater Midir is a feral Dragon that has brutal and frantic movement which makes for an intense dragon fight and is probably better than all of the Dragon fights you get in Elden Ring (which are still good in their own right). Slave Knight Gael is probably what the final boss of the main game should have been; an epic duel between two undead at the end of the world for possession of the Dark Soul. It's obviously not what 'fits' for the ending of the main game, but in terms of atmosphere and challenge it feels far more like the ending of Dark Souls than the Lord of Cinder did.

Great DLC, wrapping up the best of the three Dark Souls games in a great way.

Only a short review is really worthy for this game because all it basically is, is a stripped down, less fun version of Attila. It's not the worst total war game in the world but it's definitely the blandest by far. Can't even recommend it on a sale, just buy Attila with Charlemagne DLC instead and you'll have a far more Dark Ages experience.

In it's current state, I can't recommend. The game itself is good, interesting story, combat seems pretty fun, a rich world to explore, its just let down currently by a host of technical issues.

Currently Im running on an i5 4590 3.3gHz, AMD r9 290 4GB and 16GB RAM and im getting a ton of fps issues, even at low settings. Seeing im able to run much more demanding games like bf1 or witcher 3 at high settings with no issuies this should not be happening. Obviously im not going to be having everything running at ultra but there definitely seem to be some technical issues if my pc is struggling, also there are some game breaking bugs which need to be fixed. Ill definitely return to this game at a later date because it does look great, but its a shame the technical problems have brought it down so much.

Early Access Review
It's not reached the same level of quality as insurgency yet, sometimes the content feels a little thin on the ground, but the developers are my favourite in all of gaming and I could bet my left foot that they'll keep fleshing out, rebalancing and generally showing a lot of dedication and love to this game as time goes on, just like they did with Insurgency. Since release the game keeps improving and long may that continue.
