If you enjoy the type of strategy game where you set your own direction and goals, this will be for you. You start in the year 1444 as any existing nation in the world, and you attempt to grow your empire as you see fit. While the game has difficulty modifiers, the variance of starting as a large nation versus a single province nation, and everything in between, will impact the difficulty of the game as well.

Like many grand strategy games, it's easy to sink a lot of time into, so if you enjoy the idea of managing a nation's military, economy, and administration, and having the freedom to take it in whatever direction you choose, painting the map your nation's colour as you go, then you'll enjoy the game.

A word of caution though, is that the game has a lot of DLC. While not all of it is necessary, you'll want to pick up at least Common Sense, Art of War, Rights of Man, and there are probably a couple others now too. This is because every major update comes split between the DLC and the free update, so if you don't buy the DLC, you don't get all of the update. The worst part is when buttons will appear on the screen, but not be clickable, since you don't own the DLC that enables it. So the DLC situation kind of sucks, and if that turns you off from the game it totally makes sense.
