A well made game, but one which has some fundamental elements missing.

First of all, what is here is great. The interface, sounds, music, clear information communicated to the player, the overall game stability and lack of bugs, that I've run into, are all things this game does very well.
I enjoyed the game, especially for the first few hours. Trying to figure out the best combos for the modifiers is fun for a while. Some of the tools you have to modify a game are really well done.

However...

The game, I feel, is missing player agency. It's missing tools to give you the ability to impact the course of the game beyond just spelling the best word given your modifiers.
The number of modifiers is great, but the fact that there are so many makes it very unlikely you'll find the combination you are fishing for. This creates two problems... Either you spend plays rerolling, or play-on inevitably coming up short of the later rounds. Particularly on the harder difficulties.

The game needs more balancing if it is to remain truly random in which modifiers you can be presented with. Ultramarathon is absolutely brutal, and it doesn't feel fun just to keep rolling the dice waiting for the perfect combination of upgrades and modifiers.

I believe the game would be massively improved if you could somehow build your modifiers to take into a game. Give us the ability to be able to pick which modifiers, perhaps with some minimum amounts, or purchased with some sort of meta currency you can earn while completing rounds in previous games. Just something that makes it more fun to keep playing past the first exciting few hours of the game.

Easy to understand, difficult to master. The music and sound effects are also excellent.

Casual fun.

I knew nothing about Hades when I picked it up and after finishing all achievements, I feel I can give a general overview of the pros and cons. The game has received numerous awards this year, and for good reason; The gameplay is fresh, fun, fluid and very well designed in general. Every run of gives you options and different ways to build Zag and overall feels very polished. I did not experience any bugs that I noticed during my nearly 90 hours. So as for the gameplay alone(which I feel is the most important part of a game like this) you should play this game.
The Story is decent although I mostly skipped dialogue as I wasn't really that engaged or interested in it, I just wanted to move on the to next run and keep beating bosses.
The areas and rooms are very well designed with traps which you can use to your advantage and well designed bosses which feel challenging but not unfair, especially as you upgrade and unlock weapons, your mirror(which is persistent buffs each run) and keepsakes. However the lack of enemy variety did start to get annoying, which is one of the few gripes I have with the game.
If you are a fan of the genre I would say this is a must play.
