With hundreds of new deck-builders being created in the wake of slay the spire's paramount success as an indie title, one may expect the analogous formula presented in the same way from something like this game.

However, Monster Train is a very wonderful surprise.

The core mechanics are freshened in the form of unit placement, a simplified pathing system for the map, and new synergistic intrigue types among cards and spells alike, as well as a multiplayer feature for racing.

There are 5 currently available "characters"/clans that can be used, each adorning their own champion card that you have the option of placing with other units on one of three floors below the pyre of your train, which is essentially the source of fuel for the train, and serves as your health. Enemies will enter the train to engage you in turn-based combat, sequentially climbing up the train's three levels in attempt to defeat your pyre, the thing you are trying to protect.

The idea of being able to place units on different levels of the train is a very innovative way of adding layers of depth to a formula that has been almost perfected by sts, and is complimented by nice animated visuals and easy to understand systems. This is an example of a well thought out, "not just a cash grab" style of game that is highly worth your time if you enjoy these kinds of deck builders, and have been wanting something that exhibits mechanics with high replay value and polish.

This is a very niche take on a cooperative puzzle game in which the only way to achieve victory over the game is to coinside with your own and your partner's ideas. The game demonstrates clear capability to entertain both roles the players uphold, one being the explorer, with the other being the librarian. This Indie gem will keep you thinking and entertained even more so as you attempt to escape the dungeon with your accomplace.
