TL;DR
It is not great and even calling it above average would be unfitting. At least it exists and managed me to entertain me. Sega tried to use modern ideas to reimagine Sonic which fell completely flat.

Was It a Good Idea?
With the advancement of mobile games Sega wanted to capitalize. At first they started to port some games and while that was … alright, later on they started too develop games specifically for the mobile market.
And Sonic the Hedgehog 4 – Episode 1 is exactly that. A direct port from a mobile game that is serviceable that could never compete with the Genesis titles games, but the title shows Sega's intention.

How Is It Compared to the Past?
The short answer is: Not good enough. The gameplay is centered around the more modern interpretation of Sonic and this means that it lacks the distinctive charm of the Genesis titles. Adding up with another problem: The game was released on mobile which means it does not have the strengths of modern 3D-Sonic like great graphics or an insanely good soundtrack.
What it does bring to the table is not interesting though:
Just an absolutely average experience that will not influence you negatively (or positively). The game is not too fast and nice to play casually, not too difficult and really centered around simple reactions.
The biggest change in comparison to the past is the inclusion of the homing attack, a staple in modern Sonic games. Homing attacks are just way too strong for a 2D-game. Spamming the homing attack will become your default reaction to everything.

Nothing Original?
Yep, nothing new. It has some cool concepts for certain levels that do not get used to their maximum potential and just get replaced in the next level. The bosses are remixed variants from older games and probably even worse than their respective counterparts.
The special stages are almost the same as in Sonic 1, but they are not too bad. Just average again.I honestly enjoyed them more than I should have. Nostalgia is a really strong feeling.

What Does It Do Worse?
Oh boi.
Sonic has no momentum like he used to in Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles.
He is too slow and there almost no meaningful reactions at any point. Everything gets telegraphed for years and the perfect timing Sonic players associate with him is gone.
And the final boss is the definition of hell. If you want to go for the no hit achievement, take the following advice to heart: Don’t.

Conclusion
It exists. This is the only test it will ever pass. I can not say that it’s good, but I also can’t say that I hate it. I had genuine fun, but calling it anything other than average is still wrong. It is just there. Play it, if your brain tells you and otherwise will suffer from sadness or the fear of missing out. Otherwise: Don’t.

TL;DR
Doom 2016 is a fantastic revival for a series that changed gaming forever and illustrates this with a lot of blood and guts. Contains some of the most metal FPS action ever, bound to a brutal powerfantasy and a glorious soundtrack.

Glorious Past, Uncertain Future
Doom 2016 is a product straight out of development hell which started in 2008. Doom 3 was pretty underwhelming and somewhat killed the franchise as id Software did not know where to go:
Scary horror game or fast paced action? They chose the „wrong answer“ for Doom 3.
And the other reboot already failed: „Duke Nukem Forever” is a terrible game that could appear in Doom 2016 as it is an abomination of hell. Id Software learned from their mistakes though, did their homework and finally found the solution to what Doom 2016 should be.

Phase of Fixing (You Up)
So what did id Software do?
Glory kills are full of gore and extreme violence which makes Doom Guy feel like a badass. Which in turn makes you feel like a badass. Killing demons increases your interest in killing more demons in a never-ending feedback loop as you begin to enjoy the slaughter. It is less about the pressure and more about the freedom: you can use anything in your arsenal. Doom Guy is unhinged by nothing and so are you.
Your weapons carry the power to obliterate anything. Explosives, lasers or chainsaw: Rip and Tear is probably the most overused yet still extremely accurate depiction of this idea.
Doom Guy is fast, moves a lot, runs from enemy to enemy to finish them off for good. There are no waiting times, Doom 2016 is just a pure adrenaline rush that keeps on giving.

Mick Gordan
He fought for the music to be more on the industrial metal side and it paid off. To praise the Doom Soundtrack would bring nothing new to the table, but I still have to pay my respects to such an important OST. It is just more or less extremely difficult to say more than: “it fulfills it’s function perfectly”. The better something is, the less I can say except about the universal acclaim.

Some Nitpicks
Doom 2016 is not perfect though, the game suffers from certain problems.
1. Visuals
The visual design is excellent, but lacks variation. The game happens on Mars and hell which means the complete color palette that was used consists of red, orange, yellow and a little bit of blue. Although the quality and execution is consistently good, the lack of variation started to bore me at some point.
2. Lack of Enemy Types
Doom 2016 has not many enemies and while this makes them instantly recognizable, it misses points for variation yet again. While the fights are engaging and really good, it became a slog later on. Especially one part is infuriating as it becomes a spam fest of (almost) everything in the game.
3. Slog
Yes, you read that correctly. The last 20% of Doom 2016 don’t feel as good and artificial barriers are stopping you from progressing. A shame as the pacing had been pretty good till then.
4. Tiring
More of a neutral one. Playing Doom will exhaust you as it needs 100% of your concentration and tests your limits to the max and then some. It is by no means bad because of that, I just wanted to warn you that going to bed after a long playtime is absolutely reasonable.

Conclusion
Doom 2016 cut much of the stuff other modern FPS have:
Cover, manual reloading or defensive plays. And because of that is becomes a demon slaughter yet to be imitated by another series. Doom Guy is not here to play around, he is leading the charge against hell in a one man crusade to break all convention. So why don’t you join in?

TL;DR
Combining the gameplay of a David Cage (Detroit become human) and an X-Com-esque gameplay, Rain of Reflections has a lot of potential, but needs to live up to it over time. It is only a chapter though and no confirmation for more chapters.

Cyberpunk, but the Good Kind
Hear me out. Cyberpunk is a genre defined by its oppression, the sadness inherent to it and the feel of lack of any individiual power. A really dystopian time to be alive, if one wants it to say it like this.
And Rain of Reflection nails it perfectly. People feel disconnected and just one step away from a mental asylum. The setting is good at immersion and has some decent fictional world design. Reminding me visually of Blade Runner (the old one) is always a plus in my book.

The Quality of the Execution
This is where it gets a little difficult. Voice acting is passable with some decent exceptions. Don‘t expect anything beyond passable and then there is not much disappointment to be had. Visually it is difficult. While the style and concepts are working really well with a lot of attention to detail, the facial and movement animations are stiff at best, but wonky at the best of time. Breaking immersion is a deal breaker in such games and while it did not happen, it was really close. In the end it is good (amazing considering budget and size of the studio), yet not quite there yet.
The story pathes can branch, but the ending needs to be more or less the same as it is only a chapter of a greater story. Important to note, the freedom of choice is more of an illusion most of the time.

ACTUAL GAMEPLAY?
This one is interesting. Combining genres is always a cool idea, but needs some good execution too. Rain of Reflections does this well. The hacking minigames are small in number, but have good concepts behind them and are easily the most fun part the game has to offer. The turnbased strategy thing is alright, but not quite fleshed out. Easily the part of the game that needs the most work and offers not enough customization and options in comparison to other games of the same genre.
I applaud the idea, lament the execution and wait for improvements in the next chapters (if they ever come out).

My Biggest Gripe
The game ends in the middle of the end of the beginning. To say it‘s a cliffhanger is an understatement. And that is where it gets problematic. If there is no sequel coming out, the game will be disappointing in the end as there is no real end to it. Abandonware is what it‘s called. After checking today (16.02.2021) there are no indications of chapter 2 releasing on any of the social media of the developers for over a year, although they were formerly pretty active.

Conclusion
Play- and enjoyable, but without a goal. If chapter 2 ever releases this statement could be wildly different. Up to this point it is just an extended demo. Currently I can not recommend it, because of that.

TL;DR
A challenging but fair platformer that makes the metaphor of climbing your personal mountain a real thing. Contained within an extremely relatable story this game succeeds where others fail:
Making a genuine experience.

Climbing the Mountain
Feeling lost, not knowing what to do with your life or even being afraid of starting anything is a common disease. Yes, I say disease. Psychological suffering is real and the idea of psychosomatic illnesses[www.verywellmind.com] is absolutely not new. Yet still society can not provide definitive solutions for circumstances like depression as people have individual needs to be satisfied, so that they finally can fix their mental health.
This is climbing the mountain for regular people. Their mountain exists as a milestone for things that seem out of reach.
And this is where we enter the game with our protagonist:
Madeline.

What Needs To Be Done
Madeline starts the game as someone who wants to climb the mountain. We do not know much about her past. She actually does not even know why she does this. Yet still she pushes on. It is quite literally an uphill battle.
The gameplay is based around long levels that contain rooms of differing sizes. The only punishment for failing is getting set back to the beginning of the room. And the rooms can absolutely be brutal. Some rooms needed dozens of tries from my side to even understand how to clear them.
Tying in with the themes of the game, you are going to climb this mountain, but it needs determination and the will not to give up. Beating the mountain is no easy task, yet still it feels doable. Clearing room for room showcases your progress. Ever so slowly getting closer, not surrendering to any new danger. And there are a lot of them. Madeline does not really change over the course of the game in terms of abilities, just as her kit. Moving, jumping and one dash.
That’s all folks.
These tools do not seem enough. The challenges get harsher and the game will always throw new and exciting mechanics at you. Celeste mountain is indeed not a regular mountain, soon you will realize that too, if you stand up to the challenge.

Feelings through Design and Sound
I am by no means an artist, despite that I have something to say about the visual quality of the game. Celeste is a visually minimalist game based on 16 bit graphics that will age quite excellently as they are timeless, just like a certain gaming icon (Mario). The expressiveness of the game is outstanding and combines many motives of romanticism. Freeing yourself by traveling, spiritual places that have a certain meaning to the character and the close relation to nature (something which has been proven to be good for mental health) are really fitting and this being some of the best looking pixel art I have seen in a while sure helps.
Now we add the phenomenal music to this. Celeste is a really emotion focused game. This means that every factor of the game really wants to reflect the inner state of Madeline. Hope and anxiety, sadness and triumph. Everything gets caught as a form of ambient music that feels like a part of Madeline and maybe like a deuteragonist itself. A quite outstanding feat.

I Challenge You
Climb your mountain. Showcase me that you can do it too. Rise up to the challenge. Celeste mountain is not your mountain though. But maybe it can be part of the journey to climb your own personal mountain and finish the fight.

Conclusion
It is difficult to describe Celeste as it is a deeply personal story that can connect with (what I imagine) a large number of people. Story and gameplay are so deeply woven together that I can not really differentiate anymore between them as they are part of the experience that makes Celeste what it is. So what is it that you are left with after completing the game?
I do not what I took from it. Maybe some inspiring thoughts. Maybe a more healthy relationship to my current situation. At the very least some determination to write this review.

TL;DR
Better than the first DLC, but still not good. It offers more story content and expands on characters of the main game that did not get much in terms of backstory. Offers by far the worst grind of the game.

What Is Included?
This DLC includes a long quest following a rabbit man from the first game and some other links. Interesting fanservice with a fan favorite character that feels really distinctive from the rest of the game. Also included are some new higgledys and two new divisive martial arts.

Any Problems?
Thank you for asking, YES. The game becomes extremely grindy as the content of this DLC ranges from level 100 to level 150. Do you feel the slog?
Well at least this DLC is consistent, it follows the same formula to the core:
1. linear area with flavor characters
2. mini-boss
3. repeat 1.
4. repeat 2.
5. repeat 3.
6. repeat 4. but with more HP
Do you feel that recursion?
And the Solosseum (the biggest attraction) is exactly the same, minus story.
At least there is one cool boss battle which is something, I guess.

The New Martial Methods
They are divisive to say the least. Two are added, one of them being just genuine fun and a cool idea. The other one a QTE that will you have to do around 20 times per battle to finish bigger enemies. If you are not able to endure through this, there is zero enjoyment to be found. Making such a drastic change and adding a forced method to beat enemies (within reasonable time) feels restrictive and strange. At least the other DLC integrated this gameplay in an organic way.
This was an addition as subtle as a railgun.

For Achievement Hunters/Completionists
You need this DLC for 100% completion as “Magic Master” and “Higgledy Hotshot” require to collect items that are exclusive to this DLC.

Conclusion
It offers more than the first DLC, but still not enough. It is a slog to play through and I was not satisfied after farming for hours, just to get weapons that make it possible to beat enemies within the time frame. I genuinely liked the story and ideas, but hated the execution.

TL;DR
This DLC is almost pure trash and showcases why buying the cat in the sack is a terrible idea. This DLC feels unfinished, offers almost nothing of substance and ended on such a low note that I can’t tell if it was satire.

What Is included?
The DLC has one dungeon with 100 levels to search through that are randomly generated. So kinda like a big dungeon of the main game minus the time pressure.

Sounds Good?
It is not.
Every level has the exact same assets (from one design), the enemies are with one exception color-swapped higher level enemies from the main game and the only redeeming quality are two additional styles that now every character can equip and are utterly broken, but absolutely needed for the other DLC.
That’s it. This is everything you get out of this game. A boring 100 level dungeon that offers almost nothing new, has almost no relevance for the story and is just another aspect of tediousness.

Anything Else?
No. Literally no. This is the worst offender I have seen for a DLC in a while and is the definition of Season Pass bait. A despicable money bait, luring you in with a decent main game.

For Achievement Hunters/Completionists
You need this DLC for 100% completion as “Ding Dong Done” and “Tech It To The Max” require to collect items that are exclusive to this DLC. And the other DLC starts around a level this one ends and you need the techniques to actually reliably complete the other DLC.
In short: Have fun, you won’t.

Conclusion
Only if you want that 100% or are starved for any form of content. Otherwise ignore it.

TL;DR
A nice JRPG with a lot of charm, but lacking polish and a coherent narrative. Every good thing is half-baked, but the longer you play, the more the bad stuff catches up.

The Elephant in the Room
Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom is still being made by Level 5, but Ghibli was not involved in any kind of way anymore. This means that a lot of the magic was lost in comparison and if I had to compare this game with something I already knew:
The Tales of series comes really close, even the battle system is somewhat similar. This makes Ni No Kuni 2 a lot more generic and takes away from the identity that the first game had. Despite sounding harsh I want to stress that Ni No Kuni 2 is still really presentable and feels more like a Dragon Quest game that captures you with it’s vibrant world, goofy characters and stories, making it a lot more traditional.

The Gameplay – A Double-Edged Sword
First thing: The character you can see jumping and shooting arrows at that sandworm is the fastest character in the game and this is the most speed you can possibly achieve. NNK2 is a lot slower than that and feels like Dark Souls 2, but exchanging stamina with special moves.
Most of the time even being pretty low leveled you can one-shot simple enemies or spam MP restoring items for the bigger fights. This game will not challenge you on Normal or Hard. On expert, it actually gets harder as enemies will become bullet sponges and start one-shotting your AI-controlled party members. Combined with poor enemy attack telegraphing and strange hitboxes (DS2 sends its regards) the game becomes a slog (a word I learned from this game).
When it works and you fight the “world bosses”, the game gets its ♥♥♥♥ together and showcases what it can do. Such moments are glorious.
But these kinds of fights are drowned by the quantity of boring and color-palette swapped enemies.
I don’t think the gameplay is bad, but unfinished like most of the game.

The Kingdom
An underwhelming feature with some cool ideas. In short, you build a kingdom that gives you resources and then reinvests a currency that serves not have much of a purpose beyond using it for developing your kingdom. Recruiting people for it works by doing fetch quests and I mean like a lot of them. It is relaxing and a perfect background activity. But if you hate grinding: Stay away from this game. Otherwise, it will rip you apart. Cool idea that fell somewhat flat.

Story
DEAR LORD WHAT DID THEY DO
The beginning of the game till the second major story arc is pure magic and really interesting. The characters, design, and world just get together and the opening to this game is probably the most outstanding thing I have seen in a while.
Then it becomes an episodic story with an overarching plot. The episodes themselves differentiate in quality with some genuine and heartwarming moments in a sea of nothingness.
No character development, an underutilized cast and just the feeling like I missed a big chunk of the story are what stayed with me. Although I liked the MCs I could not connect with them as they had no moments beyond some cool, but too short interactions.
If I had seen more, I would be praising instead of criticizing.

Graphics
Impressive. The attention to detail is outstanding and sometimes I just walked through cities to look at what they could offer. The creativity for the world is only limited by some conventions, yet Level 5 managed to have a creative spin on many of them.
If you are walking through that though. A world map exists and it is just poor 3D renders of the characters that walk on blandness.

The Bad – A Small Selection
1. Everything is tedious. I try to level up my spells, 6 seconds animation every time (you are going to do this around 90 times, this means 10 minutes just to level up your spells, even if you have all the resources). The same goes for highly. The same goes for weapons, armor, accessories, trading pebbles, investing in your kingdom, and even more. This is beyond sanity and I can’t wrap my head around how anyone in play-testing did not find that.
2. The music is alright at best and gets repetitive really fast.
3. Any kind of personal investment into the story will be unrewarded.
4. The ties to the first game are superficial at best and only a really few ideas remain. Anyone wanting good ties will be disappointed.
5. Achievements are DLC-related. Without the Season Pass, you can not reach 100%.
6. Most dialogue has no voice-acting and the same 10 audio samples will be repeated again and again. Knickers.

Conclusion
It is an above-average game that suffers from problems a below-average game has. Level 5 should have worked on fundamentals first, but this is where the game falls apart. But if you can endure through these mistakes, something beautiful is to be found. Wish it could have realized its full potential.

TL;DR
Tukoni is a sweet and short point and click adventure aimed for children, but still relaxing for an adult. Want to give your kids something to work with? Here, a 20 minute adventure.

Keeping It Simple
Tukonis are forest spirits that just want to help anybody they meet. Not because it is their job, but because of the warmth of his heart. Extremely heartwarming, isn’t it?
As such you your Tukoni does his daily routine and journeys through the forest, solving forest problems with forest means. As such crafting and creative use of the tools is the aim and it works pretty well. Even simple math is something useful. Always a plus in my book.

Visuals
The game follows the simplistic artstyle of Oksana Bula who created the Tukoni for children’s books. It is extremely pleasing to look at and really relaxing. The water colors work extremely well and are pretty cute. There is no doubt that Tukoni is suitable for any age.

Atmosphere
Combined with ambient music that is calmly playing in the background, Tukoni offers absolutely no pressure. Sitting down, drinking some tea and thinking about the solution is really viable. In combination with the lack of dialogue and option to see tips again:
Yeah, I am just enjoying the experience.

Conclusion
Short and Sweet, just like I like my forest tea. Stressed out, need to think about something else? Just play Tukoni for a change. I really hope for a sequel as the ending is quite the cliffhanger.

Additional Link
Look at their website. It is great and provides links to many related children books. Absolutely worth to experience[tukoni.com.ua]).

TL;DR
A great remake of Yakuza 2 that utilized the dragon engine. Visually the most impressive Yakuza of the Kiryu saga and contains some extremely memorable moments. The biggest weaknesses is the fighting, but it gets properly compensated.

Back to Sotenbori and Kamurocho (with Jazz)
Yakuza 2 is a pretty bad game in terms of technical values and absolutely unplayable for the modern gamer. Yakuza games never age really well, but the game closest to this universal standard of playability is definitely Kiwami 2. For Song of Life the Dragon Engine was just not ready and RGG studious needed more practice, yet they had to release a product which means Song of Life feels half-baked sometimes.
Kiwami 2 fixes most things that were broken and made no sense, is a lot more stable, visually stunning and more reactive to player inputs. Paired with a fan favorite story and an epic build-up, the game works extremely well and makes this feel on par with Yakuza 0, sometimes even surpassing it.

Production Values and Content
First: The production values of the game are really good. The cutscenes do their job, sometimes even movie-like in presentation and giving Kiryu a lot more character after him being relatively stoic in Yakuza Kiwami.
Paired with a good OST and the best visuals up to this point in the series, Yakuza Kiwami 2 always is a pleasure to enjoy and dive in. Learning every place by memory would probably even be easy for newcomers, but old veterans will only see moderate yet still interesting changes.
In terms of content: all minigames except Pocket Circuit Racing and dancing are back from Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami (with quality of life changes. This means getting lost in the world is easier than ever).
Additionally it means we got back the Carbaret Club. Guys this game is worth it only for this minigame which is incredibly dumb but genius. Nothing beats coming from a fight and then caring for the nails of your hostess and listening to how their day went. A game for true gentleman (tips fedora).

The Problems
Fighting feels not as good as in Yakuza 0 and only a little better than in Kiwami. 0 had multiple styles and options to choose from and using everything in your arsenal became a splendid experience. Kiwami made the Dragon style superior, but it needed to be relearned. So up to this point relying on the other styles was the way to go.
Kiwami 2 has only the Dragon style and the only playable character is Kiryu who retains most of his moves from Yakuza 6. Yakuza games before the Dragon engine were a lot more more static and any form of attacking felt extremely consistent with little variation.
On the other hand the Dragon engine games are fluid, maybe to fluid. Sometimes I lost the feeling of having control over Kiryu and the game became too “sluggish”. .
Without any form of variation the fights become somewhat dull and only feel different if the boss is very unconventional. This happens at times, but not often enough for my taste. Say what you want about Kiwami 1, but the bosses and their movesets are extremely memorable in comparison to Kiwami 2.

Conclusion
A must-play for Yakuza fans. I was absolutely not disappointed with this game in any form. It has a lot of charm and finesse and showcases how to actually do a proper remake, blowing Kiwami 1 out of the water.
