Like Fallout 4 with a more diverse world space (all biomes are unique and distinctive), more refined gameplay systems (real-time V.A.T.S., more perk diversity, a more in-depth crafting system where you learn plans or scrap weapons to get new upgrades, and better base-building (place anywhere, more buildable items)), and, the ability to play with friends.

The main negative is that there are no mods which means once you've done all the quests and explored the entire map, you've beaten the game. (In my opinion trying to get an infinite amount of play-time out of a single game is unhealthy, so this doesn't bother me much.) Getting to that point still takes probably 100 hours if you take your time and explore the world though, so it's not like the game is short.

If you are considering getting this game and have been a fan of the Fallout series then get it. It is seriously a solid game when you look past the typical Bethesda faults.

Pros:
There is a lot of content. As far as I can tell I'm only about halfway through the main questline for one of the factions and whilst conducting various sidequests, settlement builds, and exploratory trips I have currently invested 152 hours whilst still feeling that I have barely scratched the surface of this game.

I'm not one to care much for graphics or visual fidelity but even on low / medium graphics this game looks amazing. The models are detailed, the colours are vibrant, and the textures are decent.

That's another thing, colour! This game has so much colour! No more orange Mojave or green Capital Wasteland.

Less levelled areas. This means that the game no longer panders to the user. If you go somewhere dangerous at a low level you will die and this makes it all the more rewarding to come back later on with some power armour and a modded up minigun.

Weapon mods, armor mods and all the mods. I love crafting in games and so that entire aspect is really enjoyable to me. I love the settlement building. I love the scavenging. I love the process of creating what feels like a weapon truly personal to you.

Infinite levelling. This pleases me.

Modability is neato.

Game mechanics are much more streamlined now. The way radiation directly ties into health is one example of how Bethesda has clearly taken time and effort to reconsider systems that were standard in the previous games and try to make improvements to it.

The environment is really good. That short description doesn't do it justice but hopefully it's simplicity conveys the correct meaning succinctly. The fog, rad storms, underwater, dungeons, city, wilds all feel tangible in this game. They also feel amazing.

Sprinting. Finally, at long last ther is no more need for a sprint mod. We are free!

Legendaries are cool in my opinion. Some people don't like the system but I do. I feel like having a legendary in the end of dungeon chest as well would have been nice as sometimes it's a bit disapointing to see a muffled leather leg and some random 10mm pistol and nothing else after clearing a dungeon full of enemies.

Movement is really nice in this game. The added verticality is amazing and with the adiition of jetpacks things get even more exciting.

Gunplay is smooth and feels rewarding. The sounds and animations of the guns is so much better in this game than in previous iterations. No longer do your shots feel like they are doing nothing against a target.

The crosshair is cool. Seriously I spent a good while just looking at how the crosshair moves around when you switch between weapons.

Some good lore for my lore addiction.

Cons:
Some things such as optimisation are an issue. I got a new computer to specifically play this game and I couldn't get get things to run without FPS drops in certain areas.

Less in-depth systems in many places make me feel kind of sad. The removal of skills in favour of a solely S.P.E.C.I.A.L. based system is kind of a shame. However this does come with the bonus of removing some of the unnecessary skills in previous games.

Some things are clunky. Trying to shop with a vendor requires a fair bit of hassle of going through menus to do so. It wasn't any quicker before but it's still a shame that Bethesda didn't manage to adress this specific issue.

I had to do a fair bit of config fiddling to get the game running optimally. I would have hoped that this wouldn't have had to be an issue but it was. Some things were a bit broken and needed fixing.

Lack of quality of life things that should have been obvious in playtesting. Fortunately there are mods to fix this but it would have been nice to have those features built into the base game.

You can't get achievemnts whilst you have mods installed. This is mildly infuriating as some of the mods are there to fix the issues with the game and so being robbed of your achievements whilst having a normal running game is disappointing. However there is amod which fixes not getting achievements whilst you have mods so thigns turned out all right in the end.

If you made it to the end of this review then well done. If you are still consdiering whether or not you should get this game. Then stop considering. Get it.

Considering I spent as long as I did on this game and still consider playing more, it has to be pretty good.

My overall review of Don't Starve: a great game with good art style and challenge.
Looking forward to the possibility of co-op, sounds like good fun.

9 / 10 Would recommend.
