This game is a mess. An utter mess of odd and inconsistent design choices built on top of the only framework of gameplay that Bethesda seems to understand. It's a pile of poor design choices and odd decisions on top of an old and outdated engine that Bethesda keeps using despite its obvious age, pushing the old thing beyond the very limits of what it is capable of.

Everything in this game has been done better by some other game, and in some cases been done better by its direct predecessors.

Locking weapon, suit, and base upgrades behind skill upgrades makes sense. So does locking them behind research. Doing both doesn't make sense and just adds another level of frustration to trying to upgrade your gear.

Upgrading your weapons does make sense, in and of itself. I'm not sure why my character decides that every component removed from a weapon needs to be destroyed, because unlike fallout 4, you do not retain the mod as an item to stick on another weapon.

Ship building is somewhat decent, but made frustrating by different parts only being available in different places, or locked behind skill upgrades. The fact that placements of doors and ladders within the interiors of your ship are defined by an arcane algorithm makes trying to build a large cruiser an exercise in frustration.

The ship building for some bizarre reason has a different control setup than the base building. It genuinely feels like two separate teams had to work on these systems in tandem and never communicated with each other.

Ship building is dependent on credits, where weapon, suit, jump pack, base, and research depend on fabricated components and half the table of elements. And a good thing too, because trying to get all the resources you need is an exercise in frustration. Early on it's not so bad, the resources are everywhere, but the longer you play, the harder it will be to find the exotic and rare resources you need to even research things.

In terms of loot, I have serious questions. Going from fallout 4 to starfield, Bethesda chose to implement a "quality" system, where the same weapon will have a different quality modifier which gives it better stats. Meaning that you will be able to find early game weapons that still serve a purpose late game, but also that you will keep finding the same weapons all the time. Same goes for space suits, and I genuinely find the variety therein extremely lacking.

Character customization is an actual step down from fallout 4. You can blend between multiple versions of the same facial feature, theoretically giving you massive amounts of customization, but other features are just gone, such as rotating the eyes or moving the mouth forward or backwards, or opening/closing the eyelids for your resting face. Gone are the days you could stick every single makeup option, every single scar, every single blemish on your face: you are now limited to a handful of options.

The writing. Oh boy, the writing. It's... not very engaging. There's been a few storylines that actually had me invested in their story, reminding me of the dark brotherhood storyline of Oblivion. One actually pulled a twist I really enjoyed. Beyond that most quests just seem to turn into following the quest marker, obtaining an item or talking to a character until you get told you can go somewhere else, rinse, repeat. And once you notice that pattern, you start playing the game like that.

The lack of a vehicle or faster way of transportation on planets and moons is an absolute oversight. I do not appreciate having to jog a kilometer just to find a base full of frustratingly pacifist pirates and then fast-travel back to my ship. The game does not respect my time and does not care for my immersion. It's a rough-shot combination of old Bethesda habits they refuse to shed and new ideas that mesh with those ideas poorly.

Overall, I have sunk a lot of time into this game, hoping that I'd get to the point that I actually enjoyed it, as I did with fallout 4. Fallout 4 was by no means a good game, but I managed to get into the groove and found a way to have fun with it. But starfield isn't hooking me. Starfield is bethesda doubling down on all the things they really shouldn't have. As if they took the criticism they received for fallout 4 and went looking for alternate issues, instead of proper solutions.

I cannot recommend Starfield, in its current state, to anyone. Not even Bethesda fans. With this game I chose to give Bethesda a final chance to learn from skyrim and fallout 4, but with this I am done. I have no faith in TES 6. I don't think Bethesda can, in its current state, create a worthwhile game.

If you enjoyed EYE: divine cybermancy, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this. If you didn't, it's a coinflip. Game's still rather janky, there's lots of missed potential, but on the whole I still have fun with it.

An absolutely fantastic game, even more so considering the size of the team working on it. There's lots of things about it I'd like to critique, like how the stealth falls through pretty much entirely as soon as you get a disguise, how easy it is to escape enemies when spotted. It shows that the lead dev started game development only five years ago.

Nonetheless, all these flaws are minor when you actually play. The visuals, the designs, the story, the characters, the world, it's all so well done, so finely crafted, dripping with charm. This game is a labour of love, and you can tell.

The level design is especially notable. It's reminiscent of the original dark souls (take a shot), as you find new places, and find new shortcuts throughout. It can get labyrinthine at times, but you will often enough acquire maps that help you navigate.

Next up I'd like to commend the writing of the game, and the music that accompanies it. Throughout the game you meet a great many colourful characters, and interacting with them is a joy. Throughout conversations, they will mention lore-related topics, and you can get a quick lore snippet explaining what's being said. Read all of them. The lore draws you in, and has humor sprinkled throughout in all the right places. The pacing of the story is spot-on (I never felt like the ending just snuck up on me.)

As you play a minstrel, you will occasionally be asked by characters to play songs. If you read the songbook in your inventory, you might pick up on the fact that you'll occasionally have to play a song appropriate to the situation. Despite there being no voice acting in the game at all, the melody holds up by itself and as the lyrics accompany the song, you can just hear it play in your head. Again the writing is to be commended, as the songs range from heroic tales to shantys to satire to mockery to rude songs. Every one is a delight.

On the whole I'd say that there are some decisions in terms of gameplay I disagree with, but I will still strongly recommend it.

It's fair to say I love this game. It's a true gem, a diamond in the rough. When I first tried to play it, I couldn't get into it at all. I got my legs broken, I gained no brouzoufs, I couldn't do diddly squat. I abandoned it, thinking it was an awful game.

But then I returned, spurred on by people saying that actually, it's a pretty good game. And this time when I played it, I found they were absolutely right. EYE is an acquired taste. A buggy and broken mess of a game that does enough things right to make up for its plethora of problems. A game with a plot so ridiculous yet fascinating when you get invested, with characters that can come back to life as the plot demands. EYE should not be nearly as good as it is.

If you've never touched this game before, or you've tried to and hated it, try finding yourself a nice guide on character creation and abilities. Before long, you will become a walking tank with electronic warfare capabilities, invisbility screens, psychic powers, and carrying miniguns, small nuclear cannons, or a revolver that can kill God.

If you put in the effort, if you put in the time, if you manage to invest yourself in EYE, you'll be in for a wonderful experience that you can't quite find anywhere else. Buy it, Play it, Gain Brouzoufs, and make sure your legs are OK.
