This stems from playing Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami 1, Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
As far as story telling goes, it not very exciting. It really doesnt get exciting until Chapter 4 (out of 5). Of the games in the series I have played, this really felt like a DLC - A Colosseum game with quests and a lot larger gambling space really is what this game sums up to be.

Youre mainly stuck in Sotenbori. Have little to nothing to do in Ijinjo and you dont even get to touch Kamurocho. They do tie in their Yakuza Like a Dragon game and the upcoming games in the series and it does cover the tiny interaction Kiryu had with Kasuga and thats it.

They bring back some of the references and players from their previous titles which kind of gets me engaged just a little more, but the face value it brings falls below my expectation. In perspective, I spent more time finishing the Cyberpunk DLC alone at 100% achievement than this game also at 100% achievements. Ill get more into the game details towards the end.

Fighting feels a little sloppy. Im glad they brought back the button mashing brawl way of fighting. He doesnt really reach to hit the next enemy so there is a lot of air combat. You get 2 fighting modes: Agent mode where you can use your weapon arsenal which is great to use for anyone who is not a boss.
Then you have Yakuza mode that is good for bosses which is pretty much it.

As far as using or finding weapons, you cannot keep or equip any weapon. The weapon you use in that fight only last until the end of the battle scene, until you use a heat action or until you are knocked down. \
Unlike other Yakuza games, you can stack similar items and have compounding stacks. Here, you cannot.

They got rid of the food combos for more effective healing and they also removed item sets for boosted stats. When youre swapping out gear, the equipment screen does not tells you what stats the current item gives, but it will indicate what stats will change when you swap it out. They dont show duplicates which makes equipping gear much simpler and easier, but its also very limited and shrunken down.

Im so glad that the golf mini game has gotten so much better to play. The golf mini game is actually fun to play and enjoyable. The Karaoke game feels like an actual rhythm game now because the buttons match the beats but you can only sing with Akame- no one else.

The achievements are realistic to accomplish. Unlike the Kiwami versions of the game, the achievements are impossible feats of perfection. This one at least, you dont have to play the game up to a certain level to be able to get the achievement to pop.

Its cool that there are quests you can do depending on the outfit youre wearing. I would like to see more of this in future titles, but make it where you can change your outfit in your home base or even use your Colosseum outfit out in the open like a regular costume. It also shows the change of outfit during the cutscenes. This game only allows you to change outfit in one place, and its troublesome to access sometimes.

POCKET RACING - even with guides, you really have to work for your wins and you do really have to utilize your boosts and stabilize abilities at the right times. Its so much more fun.

They did try to do something unique with their cabaret club interaction where they make it more like an interactive movie instead of the usual game graphics. Its unique; like the photography studio sidequest on Yakuza Kiwami 1.

As for the overall game, the writers did a great job with the ending. It portrayed very strong emotions and does tie in Kiryu (in this case, Joryu) with the whole reason he had his name erased in the first place. Its just THAT ending scene alone is what makes playing thru feel a little rewarding. Still, all things considered, I still felt more disappointed than satisfied (or even just ok) with this game as a whole.

its really difficult to justify paying for this game at full price. Its fun, but it just felt lacking - unfinished even. Im really hoping that they get to add perks in the next game for people who bought this one because it really doesnt feel worth it.

Great game!

I laughed. I cried. I got mad. Most importantly, I had fun.
There were a lot of the legends of the early Yakuza series that revisited this game, although I wouldve totally flipped if Kaoru came back. They do make a lot of references with Kayuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami 1, and Yakuza Kiwami 2, it would be a good idea to play those at least to understand the crossover and the relevance of some characters and events.

The achievements in this game is not as ridiculous to accomplish as the previous Yakuza games. In the previous series, you would need to complete the entire "book" to be at 100%, now, there are just simple fundamentals, and the hunting isnt that ridiculous in this one either. You can still be at 100% and only complete the fundamental missions and side quests. I just based my progress mainly on the steam achievements, and not the game tracker one.

The turn based system took a little adjusting. I was actually taken by surprise because im used to straight up button mashing and brawling with the previous titles. The job system also gives much flexibility with how you want to play and allocate your team. The skill animations are CRAZY HILARIOUS. The lunch conversations make me laugh and you can actually learn a thing or two during meal times.

Despite how fun, colorful and entertaining this game is - its just sad story stacked on a sad story with sad stories. I often forget that its a game, not a movie. Overall, great game. good value and highly recommended (but play the earlier Yakuza games first).

Great value without spending more than what you already paid for the game. They keep adding more and more content too. Also has very good replayability.

This game is absolutely brilliant. There are definitely some big fighting mechanic changes to this game, and skill acquisitions methods are a little bit of a pain in the neck. Though some arent core skills, getting them for the sake of completion and achievements dragged out a slight bit.

Kaoru, while starting off like a pain in the ass became someone very likeable and just left me with wanting more. Her story in this game, the growth of her character and the romance that grew on her sorta got me attached.

Goro Majima returns and returns with a big bang. Not only does he get his own side-game, but there is a whole side story built into this game after a couple chapters of playing though. He was vastly annoying in the previous kiwami game, but he is quite funny and enjoyable in this one. Part through the game, there will bbe big wow references from Yakuza 0 made in this game too that relates to Goro. Goro and Kiryu are very much more connected in this game.

Haruka is still a PITA. her post game requests still drive me nuts, and oftentimes requires perfection to even pass. She probably sees me as a golf god or something.

The story telling is much deeper here and assuming you didnt play the first or the second Yakuza, this is still a great piece. They may just be a bunch of orphans with sorta traumatic upbringing, but trust me, its good.

The cinematic moments in this game is splendid. Its like an actual movie and definitely worth watching through it.

Good sense of humor even in the substories. Some events are even familiar and still just as funny as its predecessor.

The Bouncer missions I thought were a little excessive and the batting missions are so much more precise.
The Mahjong game is so much more difficult even with an easy difficulty and to win in it slightly differs from what im used to in real life, but perhaps im missing some tiles to actually win a hand.

Locker keys are quite over the top. 100 lost keys. 50 in each lost city. Thats quite a bit of hunting, and often a really dragged out element of the game.

Heat Mode is a new mechanic thats sorta like the Dragon fighting style in Y0. Im glad they eliminated the Rush style altogether, sorta super buffed the brawler style and incorporated a tiny bit and nearly killing the beast style in his fighting stances.

The quest tracker is much more friendly with completing because within a quantity completion, you can expand the completion list into sub items where you can easily see what you missed, which you can also use as a look up tool.

The use of item boxes are nearly non existent. you can only use them in Poppo stores and in 2 safe houses. And rarely in some quest areas.

I liked the old way of storing items in their previous games. they would automatically be sorted into type then alphabetical, and when youre at the store, there is a ticker that tells you how many you already own even when its in storage. Sadly, this one, store items and item box storage dont see each other - only what is on the person. So there is a big chance of buying multiples of the same item at the store and picking up some repeats from enemy encounters.

Integrated key finder and item finders. THANK GOODNESS i dont have to use an item slot any more to be able to have a beep of lost items in the vicinity.

No Cat Fight or MesuKing Fights. The cat fight is boring and a long dragged minigame, but MesuKing was actually fun and i wouldve liked more of it. Actually I would rather find these cards instead of having a second set of 50 lockers -which reminds me, what ever happened to the "Professor"?

No more Pocket circuit racing. They probably took this away since it was huge chunk of play time from the Y0 and Yk1, but to see it gone in this one just after "Fighter" found a life partner is sad. Maybe the new guy didnt do too well, and that was only a year gap between both games.

Colosseum wins between the low ranks are really quick, but when you get to the B-A-S ranks, you need exponentially more wins to be able to proceed through those.

The Majima mini game construction is a great add-on to the game, and the DLC is plenty useful to get through these missions. There needs to be some balancing and a few change in their selection mechanics, but overall, its a fun addition to the Kiwami 2 game content.

There is a lot of content even in the post-game. So if playing with the minigames is your thing, thats all integrated already with achievements to go with it.

Kaoru and Date need to be a playable field partner in premium game. Theyre useful and good fighters; unlike Haruka.

Overall, great game, lost of content, highly enjoyable.

its much easier to play than its Yakuza 0 Predecessor. No missable achievements. Advancing in coliseum makes more sense in this one. I miss the cabaret battles. I like the skill tree is based off of experience and skill points now rather than spending money. I also like than the side quests scale depending on your current accumulated experience points, too.
Its comparatively much better and more fun than the previous game. This one just seems to make better sense of things.
