Intro
This review will contain minor spoilers, so be wary reading on ahead.

Let me start off by saying that this game is pretty good. As a (mostly) standalone game, I enjoyed my play-through quite a bit. The characters were very well written, and the gameplay stayed true to the previous games. However, I was quite a bit disappointed by the third act and the ending, which I will go into detail further later.

Gameplay
Much like the previous games, the gameplay is nothing extraordinary, but is compelling in its own right. Four directional movement, with a few interactions helps keep you engaged enough to follow the story through some of the quieter parts.

Soundtrack
Also much like the previous two games, the soundtrack was excellent. Not much more to say here.

Characters
I greatly appreciated the first two acts and how they handled character building for Lynri. I felt that the two main characters here were very well written and believable, while the side characters were unique and supportive to them. I do have some grievances with Quincy, but I believe that to be a plot issue more than a character issue. The team did an excellent job creating these characters, but it is a shame we only got to interact with a few of them for only a few scenes.

Plot
I have several issues with how the plot was handled in this game. Act 1 largely served no purpose in the grand scheme of the game. We are introduced to the two main leads of the game and given a little insight into the mystery of the game, but I never felt like a legitimate conflict was introduced to keep the player playing. Minor spoilers: After Act 1 finished when we're introduced to Lynri's memories, the entire first act largely felt invalidated. We only got a glimpse into the characters and spent most of the time exploring the mansion which ended up being largely irrelevant to the actual story.

As for the second act, I feel that this was the strongest portion of the game. The concept of following a person's memories through their life is really enticing, and I enjoyed watching her life play out through Quincy's eyes. My biggest gripe here is that Quincy didn't really add much to the playbacks. Yes he made some minor comments, but the entire act could've been played the same had he not been there. He was merely a device to deliver Lynri's story to the audience. This isn't normally an issue, but it conflicted with the first act and how it set him up to be a major character.

Biggest plot issues: The third act & beyond.
The game really started getting into a grove after the second act's resolution. I finally felt like we'd get a chance to see Lynri and Quincy shine together as they debunked the mystery. Instead, the game ended. For whatever reason, the third act is entirely an exposition dump, with a questionable attempt at a resolution for our two main characters. I get that the design team wanted to tell a heartfelt story while keeping interesting questions about what life is, but the twist was somewhat predictable and serves only as a small incentive for the after credits scene. On its own, the third act might've been really solid. The issue is with how it felt contradictory to what the previous two acts set up. And its conclusion, while nice, felt like a sucker punch to the gut.

The after credits scene was intriguing and is largely why I decided to give this a positive review, because it was a nice note to end on. It also set up potential for future installments.

Conclusions
All in all, this game was fun to play, and did many things right. I may have set my expectations a little too high thanks to the previous two games, but I would recommend at least one play through. The game felt very short, and I could not believe it was over when I reached the ending, I felt that the game had only just begun. It had so much potential, as the previous games have shown so, but it largely fell short. Keep in mind, it's still a well made game even if it didn't reach the height of the two previous. Also as with every review, this is strictly my opinion, and others certainly have felt differently, so I encourage anyone who's curious to try the game out if they've played the previous two.

Excellent game in my opinion. I loved the first game, and bought this as soon as I could. I believe To the Moon has a slightly better story plotwise, but this game was right behind it. If you enjoyed To the Moon, you'll definitely enjoy this one.
