Not once was "Mamma mia" said. There was only one pizza, and that was in a loading screen. There was no spaghetti at all.

Aside from these disappointments, the game was otherwise very solid. If I had had this game on the family computer back then, I would have spent hours driving around the beautifully made city and doing nonsense GTA-style.

The story is great, the missions are varied, and there's a lot of driving, but you play as a driver for the Mafia, so that makes sense. You can collect cars, nice old-timers. Driving felt "real"; those old cars, for example, have trouble driving uphill, which was funny to me. Love the detail.

Shootouts were tough overall. They felt like in mobster movies, very old-school cinema style. Even though the graphics haven't aged the best, it didn't bother me at all. For a 2002 game, it looks fantastic. There are always mods to enhance the game if someone doesn't like it.

The characters and story were great, and you could easily make a Hollywood movie out of it.

Missions weren't always easy, especially because of "old game jank" like enemy AI or some other randomness. The last mission was brutal; I spent a looooong time on it. I think it's a mission where many people quit who aren't used to old game difficulty. So a good amount of stubbornness is needed to complete the game.

Apparently, the remaster, Mafia Definitive Edition, is superior to this old version in every way. So if you want to buy Mafia 1, go for the remaster version. But if this game is free on Steam again, I can only recommend it. Or if it's on sale for a very low price.
