A run is divided into five areas, each of which ends with a fight against a boss randomly chosen from a small pool. There is no visual difference between these areas, nor maps to pick from - just new types of enemies as the timer ticks on. A game will either last around 25 (unlimited) or 10 (timed) minutes depending on the mode chosen; I recommend the latter when grinding unlocks since the reward is very comparable. Movement speed for the protagonist is what you'd expect in the genre, but there is a "dash" move with little cooldown to be had on top of normal movement, which is really useful once you remember to use it consistently. As far as inventory goes, you pick one (out of three) weapons at the start of the game and that's it - ingame powerups are only character perks and traits, or upgrades for that one weapon. These powerups are presented in the form of tarot cards - fake cards for common upgrades, and real tarot cards for upgrades connected to bosses, the latter needing to be purchased with ingame currency before being available more often. The somewhat minimalist aesthetic works well and the crimson-themed colour palette was not hard on my eyes, surprisingly enough. In terms of overall difficulty, this horde shooter is below-average - and there's nothing wrong with that. After recently having a fair bit of frustration inflicted upon me by the likes of Brotato and 20 Minutes Till Dawn, this felt like a pleasant change of pace, therefore I can recommend it as a game to unwind with. Just so we're clear though, it's so easy that I won my first ever run, going in blind. It feels a bit content-sparse currently, but the low version number (0.2.3 at the time of writing) implies the author has a lot of future content planned out, hopefully.

The most intriguing thing about this game - in terms of setting it apart from the competition - is probably the concept of melee. There are weapons with short range, where the weapon itself is the projectile which swings or stabs in a specific manner, and also has infinite piercing - the object does not stop on the first enemy encountered (so AoE of sorts). The other one is weapon sets - every weapon belongs to one or two categories (ex. Gun, Precise, Medieval etc.) and having multiple examples of the same category yields a bonus, kinda like item sets in an MMO. There is only one, barren map, but the large variety of characters makes up for it, some of which are very imaginative and make for fun builds. There is an option to aim manually, but staying with automated attack probably yields more efficient damage distribution when surrounded. Speaking of options, difficulty can also be heavily tweaked and apparently without impact on the unlocking of achievements. The music is a variety of... energetic house/dance music - pleasant, but for some reason I kept thinking it makes little sense to use it. If you get past the Binding-Of-Isaac-style visuals (of which I am not a huge fan), you might discover there is a surprisingly compelling (and difficult) horde shooter underneath. One of the few that made me try a few runs out of curiosity, even when I had all the achievements.

Compared to Vampire Survivors (the currently genre-defining title), there are a couple of differences here. It is much more difficult to recover health (no "floor chicken"s), which causes a more careful playstyle even in the endgame. One singular gun is chosen before the game starts and then the ingame powerups are just upgrades and traits of all kinds, not additional weapons. Even more importantly, the player manually aims and fires the weapon, as opposed to it being fully automated. There is also a skill tree of sorts, which is upgraded between sessions. This is supposed to enable builds, though some of the perks on there are clearly better than others and thus a "best build" kind of situation emerges, where deviating from it might only be done for roleplaying reasons. The game plays well, is enjoyably balanced and paced. There is no lore or secrets to uncover, but at least the Lovecraftian aesthetic is a nice touch (I prefer it over the absurdity of VS). I can recommend this for scratching one's itch in the top-down horde shooter genre.

Cute puzzle game. With cats! The store page media show the entirety of the gameplay so you know what you're getting, there are no surprising mechanics. The last few levels have a sudden difficulty bump but ultimately I was able to solve them after taking a break. Achievements are accessible.

More of the same and as scripted as ever, but still fun. Achievements are easy, only the Legendary tournament might offer a bit of difficulty. I never understood the obsession with Senna but obviously I'm not Brazilian.

These two maps are meant to mix things up once you get bored of the original one, as they are completely different, both in layout and objectives. They are well thought out and fun to play on so no objections here. Also if you want to play online you'll probably need these, as I feel the majority of online games takes place on these ever since they were released. Speaking of online... The developers included an achievement for 10 online victories, something I typically strongly disapprove of. I managed to grind out my 10 wins but be aware that the online regulars are mostly very experienced players, which can make it a frustrating experience for someone relatively new who just wants the achievement.

In the prelude phase you choose two prelude cards - which improve your starting economy - out of a random draw of four. This makes the game more random than it was, because a particularly lucky draw (tailored to the strength of your corporation) will create a minmaxed beginning that's hard to compete against. I love randommess so this is fine with me but I imagine some more hardcore-minded players might want to be aware of this. The new, optional win condition for solo mode is more difficult than the basic one and as such I don't like to use it. Still, I feel this expansion is essential as the prelude phase adds both flavour and momentum to the early game.

I love Vampire Survivors so much that I was hoping it would spawn a genre of its own. And games like this seem to indicate that my hopes - for once - will be realised! It even carries on the tradition of having a low price. The few staves (projectile typs) available feel unique enough that I wanted to at least try each one a few times. And the upgrades (perks) do a good job of making the player feel increasingly more powerful. The developer estimates there's 10 hours worth of entertainment here but I feel like if you want to get all of the achievements it will be much more. At least it was for me. Addictive, fun and cheap, great combination.

A spiritual successor to Hitman GO. Even though there is no story connection I recommend starting with that one as a warmup - it's significantly easier than this while having very similar gameplay. Which is not surprising when you consider that Lara Croft GO adds puzzles on three-dimensional boards. The graphics are less artsy, less detailed and more abstract compared to Hitman, but they still get the job done. There's even a boss battle now, which is quite surprising for this kind of game. Overall fun and recommendable but honestly I liked Hitman GO more still.

Full disclosure: I'm in the Credits of this game and biased, as it reminds me of a better, simpler time. But irrespective of that it's still a competent puzzle game which slowly builds up the difficulty and introduces new mechanics. The exquisite diorama-style visuals combined with low-key ambient music make for a contemplative and relaxing experience. Microtransactions which were present in the mobile version are removed here, which is great. Achievements are easy to get with one playthrough. Definitely recommended.
