TL;DR:
Fantastic game overall. If you’re fan of the series, a must buy: the jokes, story and soundtrack are on point, and you feel like a Guardian of the Galaxy. If you’re not so familiar with GOTG, maybe grab it from sales: the combat is lot of fun, feels good and the game looks amazing.

Long and reading it:
The game’s fantastic. Especially if you’re fan of the movies, you’re gonna like it. You really feel like running as part of the gang. The jokes are point, and you’ll get to be a part of it. The soundtrack has some same tracks as the movies, but also some other legendary tracks in it (Take on Me, Never Gonna Give You Up, Don’t Fear The Reaper, Kickstart My Heart to name a few). The situations that you get put to are absurd, from rescuing a lama, adventuring inside Drax’s mind to just paying a fine to galactic cops. At some point you stop and think like wtf is going on. But I think that’s really the essence what makes Guardians of the Galaxy so great! Don’t overthink it and try to understand it. Just enjoy the chaos and immerse yourself in it! Have fun with the gang! Make the most out of the situation and laugh about it!

Then about the regular stuff. The game looks visual stunning. If you have RTX capabilities you can enable the raytracing settings to get even more out of it. During the whole campaign, I encountered roughly 2-3 CTD, so not too bad but kinda frustrating to reboot the game again. Thankfully there’s a really good checkpoint system in the game, so you really don’t lose anything.

The story is interesting, and while it starts as just doing your regular space chores as mercenaries, I love how the story builds up from the Guardians accidentally making the mistake to saving the day again. You’ll also get to explore some backstory for each of the Guardians, making all the conversations with your team a lot more meaningful once you get to know them better. There are also collectable outfits for each of the Guardians, some crafted by the Eidos Montreal team, but some from different Guardians comic books. So it’s a nice addition for those interested in fashion wars, I preferred running with the movie outfits mixed with Eidos outfits for the game (as both have a great look in them).

Levels and locations are mostly linear, but have little items hidden in them for you to explore. You also get to visit and explore Knowhere, which is a bit more open level with stuff and life happening around you, so that’s nice. You’ll be also spending a lot of time between the levels in your ship, Milano, with lot of stuff to explore there as well (the damn fridge door).

Combat, that’s the other bread and butter of the game, feels very nice as well. Not a fan of games with complex move sets, but I’d say that there was a nice balance in challenge and finding out the perfect combos yourself. All of the guardians have their strengths in fight, and while you only get to play as Quill, it’s up to you to call the shots for the rest of team as well. While you do fight with 4 NPCs on your side, it never really feels like you’re doing all the heavy lifting. It feels more like you’re the leader of the gang, and playmaker during the fights.
