I really wish that steam had a percentage or "so-so" option for game reviews, and this is really a prime candidate for that rating. I really enjoyed most of my time with the game, and played it through to completion, as well as trying out some user-created levels. A lot of people who have played or reviewed the game haven't finished it, and I'd take what they have to say with a grain of salt, though there are absolutely severe issues with the game that would make most sane people stop playing after a few episodes.

This version of ROTT isn't really a reboot or a sequel, it actually feels to me like an insane TC for quake, or a really advanced source port of the original. Unlike other reboots, like Doom 2016 where the gameplay is heavily inspired by the original, but altered, ROTT's updates to the gameplay seem way less severe. This is great if you're a fan of the original, like me, as you've basically got this very faithful, slightly updated ROTT 1.5 kinda thing, but that comes with some really huge issues.

The original Rise had a lot of technical issues and limitations, and this one is, unfortunately, in the same category. I accidentally bugged out the game and clipped into level geometry multiple times during sequences with moving walls and platforms, forcing me to restart from quicksaves. The game's performance also isn't great, bouncing from 200+fps to 40, and with seemingly little reason to do so. I'm playing the game on an i5-2500 and a gtx750ti2gb, which is well above the minimum spec, and even at a very low res, with everything on a low preset, I still get pretty mixed performance. It's not necessarily unplayable, but with how well Unreal games seem to scale, I'm quite disappointed with the framerates I got. The game also crashed for me numerous times when attempting to load quicksaves on a very intense level, but that never happened anywhere else in the game. I imagine if I played this game in 2013, it wouldn't be as glaring, but this game's technical dilemmas mirror it's predecessor's. It's on an outdated, older engine, and forced to try and compete with newer, more advanced games released around the same time. Funnily enough, for both this version of ROTT and the original, a member of the competition is Doom.

The gameplay also feels unfair, and dated at times. Unlike Doom 1993 which came out swinging and hasn't lost a step, Rise of the Triad felt old when it was released, and this game is no different, feeling distinctly dated, and at times, in all the worst ways. Some of the encounters and bosses just cheat, to put it bluntly. It's like the worst encounters in Shadow Warrior, but made even more insulting because, at times, the game doesn't let you quicksave. When fighting a boss, or when on moving platforms, you can't quicksave, which makes the game's tricky platforming and stupidly unfair bosses(even on normal, which I played on) extremely punishing, and I imagine this turns a lot of people off if they're not expecting a very authentic "90's BS" experience. The level of enemy variety is also very low, which was an issue with the original, but seems even worse today. The weapons also could have done with an upgrade, combat always boiling down to using the SMG, the staff, or whatever heavy weapon you're carrying, and you can't carry more than 1 heavy at a time. This idea could have been great if the heavy weapons were used as they are in Halo, where you fire off your rockets then drop it for another weapon, but the SMG is the only effective hitscanning weapon, and it has infinite ammo. The pistols are useless after you get it, and generally I try to avoid nuking the ♥♥♥♥ out of small groups of enemies, saving my special weapons for dicier encounters. A Doom or blood style shotgun, flare gun, or something could have made combat a lot more interesting.

With all that being said, this game isn't trying to appeal to anyone BUT fans of the original. And it does this to a decent level of success, in my eyes. Just like the original, it's a really wacky romp through a re-badged nazi cult, with special weapons that are completely overkill, and situations that are pretty ludicrous. You actually explore these huge, fully 3d, distinctly ROTT levels wasting dudes, collecting secrets, and blowing ♥♥♥♥ up. Just like it's predecessor, it does a lot with a limited sandbox, and at times gets really silly. You can check for screenshots on my profile, I took some of the later episodes, where the art design gets a bit crazier, some of the areas really look like what I always dreamed of ROTT looking like.

Oh, and JESUS CHRIST, the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MUSIC! Playing a lot of oldschool-inspired FPS games, I've heard a lot of Andrew Hulshult's work, but he absolutely outdoes himself in this soundtrack. It's just fantastic, absolutely stunning. Tracks from the original have been remixed into these beautiful electronic and metal anthems, which just provide so much energy to the game. I cannot put to words how much I love this soundtrack!

It isn't the best of these retro-revival shooters, and it has kind of ended up as another awkward-intermediate step, due to it's time of release, and the tech powering it, but for fans of ROTT or other wolf3d engine games, it's worth picking up, especially for the laughably low rates you can get it if you poke around. Should you be buying this over DUSK or Amid Evil? No. Should you spend your time playing this over Ultimate Doom, Duke3d, Shadow Warrior, or Blood? No. All these games do most of what this game tries to do, and largely do it better. That being said, if you're a fan of the original ROTT I'd very confidently recommend you this game, and know you'd enjoy yourself, at least for the most part. There's worse ways to spend a few pennies(that cheap), and a few hours, so long as you know what you're in for!

It's like a build engine game, except at some point a chainsaw dude will barrel through a wall of crates, and to kill him you can chuck an exploding barrel at him, shoot it, then crouch-slide away while everything explodes.

Cannot recommend it enough!

This game is phenomenal, and insanely fun to play. Exactly the sort of zany and challenging gameplay vr can provide. I purchased it on sale for 11 dollars, and at that price I don’t think you can go wrong!

This is actually the vr "dancing" game to beat. Beat Sabre is a fine rhythm game, but Audioshield's generation system actually makes your music danceable. This, at one point, was easily the best game available for any vr system by such a large margain that it wasn't even funny. However, without any sort of streaming or song-searching functionality, the game loses a MASSIVE ammount of it's appeal. No longer can you hand the headset off at a party or with friends and try your favourite songs, you need to download everything beforehand, and scan them into the game. The actual gameplay is still the same, but the spontaneous enjoyment of trying for the leaderboards of your favourite tracks, or searching up songs you like without leaving the game are is gone. If they ever get any sort of streaming or searching functionality back, this will again be the best game in VR, be that Youtube, spotify, or some sort of other search functionality, but at current, the game is a shadow of it's former self.

Really exceptionally good, just like the first. Essentially more of the same experience as the original game, with engine upgrades and slightly more content. For me, that's well worth the asking price.

This game should be the standard for how the milsim/semi-realistic battle royale games handle gunplay. I can't reccomend it enough.

Note: a lot of people say the anti-cheat is intrusive, which it is. I don't have anything of value that I can't recover on my gaming PCs so I'm confident in playing without that being a fear, but I can't say that everyone feels the same.

Left this review RIGHT before Mt Dione was removed. For some reason the developers engaged in a 5 year self-sabotage which led to this game being sunset earlier this month. Super sad to see it go, I can't stop imagining what could have been.

Beat saber is the worst best game I have ever played. It currently stands as the best vr game, and best vr rhythm game now that Audioshield song streaming is busted. That being said, the game itself is pretty bad. It has like 12 songs installed, which are all pretty excellent, but the content shortage is pretty apparent.

Fortunately, modding makes this otherwise unexceptional game insanely fun. You can import custom songs and gamemodes, search songs, and basically extend the life of the game millions of times further than the devs could.

Without mods: 5/10
With mods: 9/10

Definately the best twin-stick shooter since Hotline Miami. Asside from a really strange difficulty spike in the second to last level, RUINER is a pretty slick, well paced shooter with some sweet spectacle fighter elements thrown in. I got it for 14 CAD on sale, but I've purchased about 10 copies for myself and friends, and it's so damn spectacular that I'd throw down another 140 on it. The soundtrack alone would carry a lesser game.

Not a bad game, really. Has a great in-build integrated server hosting/joining system, so it doesn't nead virtual LAN software or anything. Pretty funny, and deffinately worth it for a buck. If you play it for an hour, and skip buying a coke, you'll break even and have enjoyed your time.
