The gist of it:
It Takes Two is a casual but wonderful coop experience, a game that always comes up with new gameplay mechanics to keep you and your coop partner entertained.

👍 The good parts:
+Gameplay mechanics always change with each chapter to keep things fresh from start to end.
+A visual treat, with different and unique locations.
+Great overall sound design.

👎The bad parts:
-Incredibly easy, with little to no challenge at all in regards to platforming and puzzles.
-Main story is nothing special.

Story
It Takes Two is a story about the divorce of a couple, and how their kid through magic and with the help from the Book of Love will help them get back together. It's a simple story, no plot twists, nothing really special. You know how it ends the moment you start the game. What is special about it, sorta, is the small parts of the story that happen while you're exploring the magical world of your house and its surroundings and how you're fixing your relationship with one another.

The story starts with you and your other arguing while your daughter is trying desperately to help you get back together which sadly fails. She then goes back to her room and starts crying and somehow, never explained, through magic you two become dolls and are teleported to a twisted reality of the house you live in. The Book Of Love, comes to her aid and forces you both to deal with your relationship through several trials or chapters, each bringing you back closer to one another.

It is nothing really special about it, so don't jump in the game for the story, It Takes Two is more about experiencing something, hell I'd even argue this game would fit better an actual couple rather than playing it with your friends and most will see it that way which will make it less appealing to a lot of players.

Story rating: 7/10

Gameplay
You play as either Cody or May and the main genre of the game is platforming and puzzle-solving with a bit of combat in between. I'll start with the worst aspect of the game because really there is just one, the difficulty. Unfortunately, this is a casual game, a very easy to play and get into no doubt but it will make a lot of its mechanics irrelevant. To put it straight, you cannot die in the game, sorta. If one if you falls down the pit you are brought back to life instantly or if you fall in combat or other events you can resurrect yourself easily by tapping E. If both of you should "die" at the same time, the game has a ton of checkpoints, even in mid/end boss phases that you'll never truly feel punished for it. That means a lot of the platforming events such as avoiding traps and whatnot become pointless.

That being said, the very easy difficulty won't matter much if you jump into the game with the right expectations, even more so when the gameplay mechanics always change. What I mean by that is, in each chapter, you are given a set of tools, unique for each character and these tools will help you traverse the maps, solve puzzles, and progress through the level design. The coop aspect is extremely important as each tool will be used in combination with your partners. For example in the snowy chapter, you are given half a magnet, the blue for May and the Red for Cody, which is positive and negative and you will help each other push or pull obstacles for one another or simply traverse chasm by "attracting" to one another with the magnet force. Now imagine that in each chapter you get different and unique tools and you'll see why the game never really gets boring.

It's a shame the difficulty is so easy because there are some really nice boss fights that could've been so much intense but alas, as you cut through its 10 to 15 hours all these awesome moments are more visual spectacle than gameplay challenges. There are some 1v1 moments called couple challenges where you play unique and fun minigames which can certainly prolong the experience if you wish.

As for the split-screen thing just like in A Way Ou but probably more so here, it's pointless if you play online. You will almost always see what your partner sees and I get that it's a creative choice but it's not a good one, to be honest, and it's only good if you play on the same device.

Gameplay rating: 8/10

Audio
Straight out the bat, the first tunnel you go through or when the first event song starts playing, you'll notice how incredible they are. I was honestly shocked at how great the sound effects were and how they sounded unique, different, and accurate as you jumped and went through different places. There was clearly a lot of effort put into that and even the music, as you go through the last chapter, you'll be in awe. I think the final chapter of the game is one of the best visual and audio moments I've experienced in gaming. It felt like a Pixar/Disney movie so huge props to the team that pulled that off.

As for the voice acting, while it has some cringe moments they do a great job at acting out their roles, especially The Book of Love.

Audio rating: 9/10

Graphics, performance and tech analysis
90% of the time it feels like you're actually playing a game straight out of Pixar or Disney animations. It's visually incredible and some set pieces will absolutely stun you. The character models, especially the ones you play look very detailed, the world, the level design, and how it all seamlessly fits together is truly an incredible work of art. Each chapter will put you through unique places, from snowy areas to a toy city that feels like it came from an RPG.

But such visual performance does come at a cost, and there's going to be moments where the framerate will tank heavily but those are very rare moments luckily. There are some issues with connectivity and the second player might experience delays and lags so beware of that.

Graphics, performance and tech analysis score: 9/10

Conclusion
So is the game worth it? Hell yeah, it is. It's a wonderful coop experience, even if you play it with a friend rather than your lover/partner and while the difficulty is very casual-like it should not stop you from experiencing this work of art.

Final score: 8.2/10

Oooh thank you for the review! Have been keeping an eye on this one to play with my boyfriend, as I loved a way out.
I didn’t expect the difficulty to be so minimal but I guess I just have to approach it at another angle and see it’s other strengths. Still looks super fun and I’m more keen to play it now after reading your review, thanks again :)

I think a 5 year old is a bit too young for it. Depends on how well she plays.

Can I play this with my 5yo sister? Is it that easy?
