I want to enjoy this game, but unfortunately it crashed resetting my progress to the beginning of the mission. Seems poorly optimized almost 5 years after release. Extremely disappointing

A completely disappointing 1.0 release. Base game is enjoyable for a time, until you realize how truly empty the world is. While battles are enjoyable, the outside world is not. I have waited an extremely long time for this game and purchased it relatively early in it's development, only to feel taken advantage of by the devs. Bannerlord is tagged "RPG" which personally bothers me. Yes you can create a character, choose what weapons and armor you want to use, but beyond that, where are the personalized interactions? Every play-through feels the same. I started a new 1.0 sandbox in hopes to get some of the newly added achievements only to figure out, they don't even work? WHY WOULD YOU NOT FIX THIS BEFORE A 1.0 FINAL LAUNCH. ITS NOT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ FINISHED.

Early Access -arvostelu
There are multiple talking points I would like to make in this review.

Gun-play: I have played for around 10 hours now, and I do enjoy the gun-play. I feel as if there is an ok amount of variety currently, but I do believe more weapons/attachments/etc need to be added in order to make this feel fully fleshed out. The actual shooting sounds great, and there have been multiple instances where I have been startled being shot at as I trudged along through the woods looking for more loot to sell. I think shooting is impactful, and leaves me satisfied as I ambush bots around the world, but I also feel as if the lack of variety hinders my feeling of excitement or long-term progression.

Armor/Clothing: I find the aesthetic of the clothing and armor fitting. This point will boil down basically to the same thing as weapons - there just needs to be more variety. Currently, there are three utility vests (vests which provides inventory but no defensive value) and four different armored vests (one that provides inventory as well as a defensive value, while the other three are strictly used as armor). In my 10 hours of gameplay, I have seen them all. Maybe I am being nit-picky, but I do believe to extend the longevity of this games life, it should have more armor variations.

AI: This is an interesting one. The AI in the game has really good aim, but lack the ability to utilize any form of cover. The AI also does not use any form of higher level tactics. This becomes a problem, in my experience, specifically playing solo. As a solo player, if I had planned on completing missions or clearing an AI populated area, I would find myself shooting the first bot from afar, backing up, and then waiting for the rest of the AI to swarm me one by one. This results in repetitive solo fights, as the AI simply charges you while having no other recourse. If a player has little armor, the fact that the AI constantly runs towards you, plus having their above average aim, makes this strategy the most practical yet least enjoyable. As I played I had partied with another random individual in the lobby and we did missions together. This was the most enjoyable period of gameplay I experienced. Even though the AI would charge one of us directly, the other would have a chance to take a shot without being directly assaulted. I believe the solo experience fighting bots is completely different than fighting with partied, and leaves me frustrated some of the time.

Bugs: During my time spent playing I only witnessed a single bug, but in the correct circumstances, it could be devastating. While I had partied with another individual, they had died, and upon relocating their body and attempting to retrieve their loot, they couldn't. I don't remember explicitly what the error said, but it boiled down to "You cannot access this container at this time." For a game where the progression of gear is a main point of gameplay, this would be extremely frustrating. You were shot by bots after grinding for however long in order to obtain high level gear, respawn and run *all the way* back to your body to be told you can't have your stuff. Luckily someone in the lobby gave them some replacement gear, but if that wasn't the case, and I was in their shoes, I probably would have stopped playing right there.

Building: In my short time of gameplay, I actually have not attempted building a base on any server, and plan to do so in the upcoming days. At that time, I would like to update my review to better reflect my opinion on this subject. From what I've heard from active players is that it takes an extremely long time, but I would like to get a first hand account.

Development: Looking at the development of this game, mainly, I have positive feelings. Updates are being pushed out at what I would consider, a pretty fast rate. And that is fantastic, but I do have one minor grievance. Vehicles had been announced with their upcoming update of 0.5, with the sneak peak of hoverboats. I have faith in the devs of this game, as they have been seemingly hard at work, but I do hope that more vehicles are added besides hoverboats. The majority of my time was spent running from point A to B. If any form of land vehicle is added, even with the caveat that they are hard to obtain, I would be happy. This would help extend the enjoyable grind of the game, while also minimizing, what I found to be, one of the least enjoyable aspects of gameplay. I do believe that land vehicles will be added, but they have not been shown, and that leaves me slightly worried. Considering I spend way more time running than swimming, the fact they teased hoverboats but not land vehicles leaves me slightly confused, but this could be written away as them building hype for the map extension. (If they add land vehicles, I will most likely revise parts of this section)

Overall, I enjoy this game. The gunfights, looting, community is all enjoyable. I do get frustrated at the amazing aim of AI, but tend to get past this fact by putting my focus on upgrading my gear. I think with the amount of updates the game is receiving, it has the possibility to be a great game. Some bug fixes here, some more content there. In its current state, it is pretty bare bones, and considering the initial release date was April of 2020, there should be higher quality content in the current version of the game. But with the active updates, I think its safe to presume this game will continue to be developed into something great. I recommend it, but with the warning of bugs and the obvious statement: it is early access still

TLDR
AI is whack sometimes, shallow progression, gunplay is good, some bugs which could be a deal breaker if you are worried about losing hours of grinding, but the devs are seemingly lively and active, and whats here is already good.

EDIT 3/16/2023

As there have been little to no quality updates for this game, I have decided to change my positive review into a negative one. I was hoping to revisit this game at some point, but as there is no new engaging content, I simply do not feel the want or need to. I'd wait until final release on this one.

Tons of depth, but still easy to play. Very rewarding system of leveling and gaining new tools/items through loops. Lots of replayability. Multiplayer is super fun too

Base game is decent but bare. Future core features, that have been included in previous games, will most likely be locked behind a paywall DLC. Please stop funding Paradox's DLC marketing. I would be fine with it if there was quality content, but there never is. In my opinion it is anti-consumer; churning out as many DLC's as possible in order to maximize profit, but this leads to a decrease in quality and quantity. I was originally excited about this game when it came out, but it'll only be worth playing in 5+ years after sinking over $400 into DLC. So what's the point?
