Good vibes bullet-hell incremental upgrade game.

There is a pretty decent balance for upgrades vs. skill that felt good when I could advance through more than one stage at a time without having to go back into grinding the same stage to unlock skill-tree upgrades multiple times, or even all the time. New mechanics are introduced gradually enough, but they can still surprise you if you aren't prepared for a new enemy or bullet pattern. Sector themes are coherent, but distinct enough to provide some novelty, given the core premise of laser-mining asteroids for coffee beans, where you might expect to find the environment repetitive or stale.

Sound design and music are great. Specifically, the bullet-clearing pulse mechanic had a distinct sound cue to let you know when the cooldown is ready, which I've found under-represented in a game like this where visuals can get a bit chaotic. The art and enemy small enemy designs were specifically very uniquely identifiable, so you know what attack patterns to expect. Some of the bosses, especially when there were multiple units composing the fight less so, but they tended to operate in a pattern you can practice and learn.

The one negative critique I have is that the ship has a short animation at the start of every stage where it swoops in with a little flourish onto the screen, but you cant really tell at what point you are in control. You can kind of just get used to the timing since I think it's consistently the same duration, but there didn't seem to be a specific cue here. It didn't really affect gameplay all that much, but there were probably times I took otherwise avoidable damage right at the beginning of a stage that felt just unfair enough to notice.

Game ran basically perfectly for me on Linux under proton. Great with a controller.

Picked this up shortly after seeing one of the developer posts, as one of the bundles. Native linux build ran great on my desktop (Ubuntu 25.10 development release, as of time of writing)

Definitely similar vibes to Max Manos, but with more (but not a huge amount) of a world building story and fun ending. Felt like I blinked and 7 hours were gone while listening to podcasts. Early game build decisions felt meaningful, but by after the "ending" as I was filling out the remaining skill tree, it was mostly just slamming currency into what was left. Had I paid attention to the "preferred" mechanic earlier, I could have played more optimally.

It's been over a decade since I first really got into this game, but would revisit it every few years. The graphics and menuing in the Steam release are significant quality of life improvements. There seems to be some input lag that is most obvious with the mouse inputs, but I am also playing on Linux via Proton, so this might be fixed by the later native release or maybe a future patch?

As far as the gameplay goes, you can death-spiral your fort in the tutorial, as Toady intended.

I picked this up awhile ago, and only ended up playing a bit of it before writing it off. Recently though, I decided to play it again, and ended up playing through to completion in one sitting.

SteamWorld Dig is a great little arcade-platformer. You play the role of Rusty, a robot cowboy/prospector that has come to town to find out more about his uncle. Equipped with only a pickaxe, you begin to excavate the depths below Tumbleton.

At it’s heart SteamWorld Dig is a run-jump-and-dig platforming/collection game. More advanced platforming mechanics are introduced throughout the "dig", through mini-caves scattered within the main shaft. Mining and selling the ores you find exploring is the main mechanic to buy upgrades. I found myself a little frustrated at times with my purchases being non-optimal, but there is probably a science to the upgrades that would make the gameplay feel a bit more rewarding.

Exploring otherwise felt fun and engaging. All the ores to be mined brought out the completionist side in me. The “natural” obstacles were easily overcome with the correct upgrades, but sometimes just ended up requiring a bit more scavenging be done in order to purchase the correct upgrade so that you could continue.

The art-style and characters are fun and surface-level interesting. The story is basically there to serve a glue for the game to make sense — it isn’t really necessary, but doesn’t get in the way if you just want to dig.

Overall, I’d recommend this game as it provides enough of the fun platforming and resource collection aspects without being too hard on you when you make a poor decision in the upgrade paths. Would play again.
