Is the Directors Cut worth it?

For me its a yes, i didnt even finish the game once. I just love to come back to it, see how many people ive helped with building bridges and make a couple deliveries.

The Directors Cut just gives me more of that, i connected the entire South with Zip-Lines and was met by a sense of pride and accomplishment. When i logged into the Base Game by accident, these where missing and it was a big turn off.

At the end of the day, this game helps me tune out of my normal life and zone into a melancholic world without feeling the need to perform or achieve to much.
Thats rare nowadays and i love it for that.

I love it. It delivers what it promise.

Its a shame that none of my 300 steam friends owns it. Would be better with friends, but most of my EU community didnt watch Starship Troopers nor did they ever open their heart for Japanese culture.

If they see over-the-top stuff from Japan, they automatically disregard it.
Tbh, i get it as im the same with anime.
Cant watch this superhero stuff or things that are just leaning to hard into whatever they portraying.

We are all just humans after all, not everybody can be in the Valiant Infantry, the alpha team with passion and comradery

Its a mixed bag. 7/10.
TL;DR:
If you didnt play DL 1, just get that for less then 10€ and then come back later to DL2 when its either cheaper or better. DL 1 is still beautiful and well made.

There is definetly wiggle room and potential that it gets better. Right now, get it on sale for 30€ max. and approach it like a stoner playthrough of a better Assasins Creed. That sets the right expectation.

I will update or comment on this when the above changes.

What i like:
+ Graphics and how well it runs on my RX580
+ Mechanics are great with the exception of the skill system lacking depth
+ Night is now scary AND fun!
+ Normal zombies are just annoying and only dangerous in crowds. Thats exactly how the casual zombie should work. As smth to avoid, not being worth the hassle and resources. Not many games get that right.
+ Sidequests are fun and i like to sit by campfires and listen to random stories that people tell
+ Lsten to the very short and neat Logs, heck even read em. They are on point and quick to get through
+ World makes sense and is well designed, very beautiful.
+ Its challenging at its core. Probably one of its best strenghts.

What i dislike:
- Choices dont really matter
- Everything tries to convince me that my choices matter, making it even more annoying
- Overleveling kills the challenge and made it boring for me.
- Main Story is not really catchy. Not bad at all tho. DL 1 had the same issue, so thats expected.
- Skill system is kind of a joke, very superficial and meaningless what you skill.
- SAME ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ANIMATION FOR BACKSTABBING EVERY TIME - it really makes me hate stealth in this game.
- There is some overpowered bugs/features: Imagine you are dropping from a skyscaper on a group of enemy. 3 Buttons presses later, no fall dmg and before you touch the ground everyone is dead. LAME!

In the beginning i wasnt sure if detouring and comming late to a quest will affect the quest, so i hurried.
Then i had the feeling that some sidequest disappear after certain decisions/quests made, so i felt the pressure of doing it right and doing it when i still can.
They both gave me feelings that made the world seem alive, dynamic and important.
In the end, i fell for a clever illusion we all do from time to time: We fill the gaps.

For a game promising Dying Light 1 / Fallout level of freedom in approaching and influencing the world, it doesnt quite play out that way. The more i played, the more i felt like im in a Ubisoft game. Nothing really matters, but everything tries to appear that way. Meh.

I hate freedom of choice which rarely affect the world in a way that matters. Its more like Levolution-destruction in BF4, cool to have but much disappointing on a deeper level.

Now i did a ton of sidequest and enjoyed them for the most part, but the difficulty is crazy easy because i overleveld. I guess thats an RPG problem, but its kinda stupid.
One of the most fun things of this game was trying to survive and comming out with clever or cool ways of doing so...
When you overlevel, that sucks the juice out of that.

Definetly dont finish up to many side quest and more or less rush the main story. Thank me later.

I often time wished that it would play out like a Fallout NV or Fallout 4 game. They made a great job of integrating the player in the world. DL 2 attempts this, but ultimately leans more into half-baked modules that lack the final touch.

The more i playd, the less the world building catched me. Also the skill system feels superficial to me.
There is skills no sane person would pick like the knife throwing BS and in the end everyone has pretty much the same character.

Making my own camp would be a cool extra i guess. 7/10 - please make it better!

Logged in 3 Months later, my Bridges and Roads are still used and appreciated. Feels gud

Dont know whats happening, but i gave medications to an eldery man, Luden Figurines to on Otaku and defeated the Higgs Boson itself, for now atleast.

I never saw an Open World Game understand its core concepts of just running from A to B so well.

Its catchy, its deeply interesting. The long intro can be offsetting, but looking back, it forces you to lean back or out of the game. Lean back it is, so you can press "Pause" on life and reflect on it through the lense of a carrier delivering packages.

I encourage you to try understand and look at the world. Tune in to some music and read some E-Mails or Data Logs while you catch a breath. They are a quick read and a great source for your imagination while you are out there trying to make sense of what it is it needs you to know.

Eye candy.

Best game ive ever played. I dont remember much from games typically but this one stayed fondly in my memory. Its more then the sum of its parts AND the moment to moment gameplay is still amazing.

Its just good for the soul.

UPDATE 6.0

tl;dr.:
Its MORE of what it always wanted to be: An immersive FPS with emphasis on strategy and teamplay. Still the best of its subgenre, now with bigger lead.

Long version:

MORE IMMERSION through improved suppresion. MORE STRATEGY because running and gunning with accuracy is a thing of the past. MORE TEAMPLAY because lonewolfing will leave you bleeding out with a handful of kills at best.

Its an open secret that the update wasnt intended to please everyone and that shows in the review bombs.
The twitchy, sweaty boys that relied on absuing every possible game mechanic and running around like naruto runners on crack are crying and leaving.
I say ♥♥♥♥ em.
The other majority is very much pleased about the unavoidable need for more teamplay and more strategy since SHIFT+W and clicking heads is not a goto anymore.

Yes, we are all struggling right now to figure out how to best play with the new mechanics - most of us are welcoming the challenge.
Many of us are stuck in their old ways so its the perfect time to jump in!

Sidenote: The competetive scene was housing a lot of toxic and annoying players and many are leaving now. Lets build a better one in their place. One where it is about the now undeniable essence of the game: Together against each other.

Thanks OWI!

OLD REVIEW: (fits even more now)

Easily the best FPS of its subgenre. Following into the footsteps of milsims like Arma 3 and Project Reality, it gives you the immersion of both, without loosing itself in overly complicated mechanics or controls.

Some call it a Teamplay Simulator and thats exactly the target group.
If you like to play alone and go for a high K/D, it will wear out and get boring after a couple weeks, its effectively forcing most players into communicating, planing and executing Strategies laid out by either Squad leaders or the Commander.

Most solo players are "seeded" out in the process. It requires a lot of us addicted to constant dopamine of action to adapt.
The trade-off is amazing, giving you a much better hit of dopamine when a carefully executed strategy is timed right and comes into fruition.

Besides that, Commanders and Squad Leaders, 100% decide where to put a Respawn Base and it it should be ridicoulisly reinforced by a huge amount of base building props and mounted weapons.

No matter what role you take, there is ups and downs for picking it.
Wanna lead the team into victory, providing recon, artillery and your strategic expertise of your RTS experience?
Commander is your role.

Wanna find out how to execute the commanders goals, organising yourself with other Squads and utilize the roles of your Squad?
Squad leader is for you.

Wanna help your team get across dangerous areas or buy time for them?
Get a heavy MG! The "suppresion" effect is not just scary in this game, it effectively makes it very hard for the enemy to peak. Combined with a spotter and maybe a sniper, the rest of your Squad can reach their destination safely.

Clear out nasty buildings with Riflemen and Snipers hiding?
Greeeenaaadeee launnchhher *pop* *Bphroom*

And thats just a few classes and combinations, every vehicle has its own twist and way of handling.

Even logistics to build bases and resupply with ammo are a thing, with choppers or trucks.

Looking for an FPS where achievements are made together and every soldier is actually important? Where it feels like it has reason and meaning?

Wanna feel like a real soldier shouting "SUPPRESION FIRE!!" when mortars explode next to you? Then come and share some of that beautiful democracy with us.

I love this game, thanks Offworld Industries!
