Haven't played Overwatch 1.
With that in mind, not in comparison with 1, it's a very good game.

Lots to be said about monetization though, it's an insult really.
The way the currecnies work are extremely deceptive for new players. Example, some skins can be bought with both white (is earned) and gold (is mostly bought) credits, but if you don't have enough white they will only show gold as a buy option even though you don't have enough. New players naturally don't have much of any so they won't know and might spend gold on things they don't have to.
Battlepass doesn't pay for itself.
Battlepass content is mostly bad. Like souvenirs which are redundant things no one cares about. Mythics are becoming a joke, every new season is worse without fail with less and less customization. Player icons are laughable just to fill BP space, name cards the same mostly. Generally there is a clear lack of effort with uninspired and unattractive things offered, many recolors among them.
Obviously you have to make money, just make it with good content instead of this current awful offering and keep the shop prices reasonable, which they are not.
Now there is a new currency for competitive points just to confuse people further and lock them out of things they earner, asbolutely braindead stuff.

However, what is important is the game feels fun and rewarding to play which is more than can be said about most multiplayer shooters at the moment.
It is well made and gameplay is what matters most at the end of the day.

Events are nice, not all of them. Some are fun and give nice rewards. Some boring and unfun and last too long.
UPDATE : Events are now all just garbage, no more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and they stick around so long. Most importantly they are boring and stick around for too long. They might as well just be a set of chores in the form of challenges. So instead of fun stuff with exciting rewards, it's busy work in exchange for nothing.

It's a shame the character's backstories aren't really tied to the game, Example Hanzo-Genji being brothers, barely any focus on such stuff, like matching skins or something, sprays, lines. Missed opportunities.
And it seems they are removing any semblance of story and lore for some reason, I am truly baffled as to why.

Balancing has seemingly gone around in circles as long as I've been around and tanks are more oppressive than ever, they barely touch the truly broken heroes who are bad for the game, while decimating those that just get by.
All accompanied by nonsensical and contradicting statements from the devs.
