Disclaimer: I'm putting my thoughts down as I play my first campaign after getting this dlc, might edit this review / add on to it after playing some more

First off, I like the idea of hero characters that start the campaign on their own, potentially gathering more comrades around them as they progress. I think this has potential for future dlc's, too. I was a bit sceptic at first when I saw the dlc news and realized it was more of a new class rather than a new species to play, but I like what they did with it.

My first run with the powdermaster started off very well. He counts as dual wielding, so getting an early Flurry or Akimbo with him as I did is very strong and so are the powders. The talents are fun, too, although a bit stamina heavy. As such, I got really lucky when on lvl 3 I got the Lone Wolf trait and thought it would be worth it to carry me through the early game, even though it might be useless later on as I recruit more party members. Little did I know that would not be necessary.

Honestly, with the set up I had, the powdermaster seems very overpowered. I might just have gotten lucky and I see how one could potentially struggle getting this build off, but my run was just smooth sailing all the way to the final boss. As a solo party member, he gains levels insanely fast and I was maxed out before starting the final street.

I also have a few complaints with some of the new mechanics added to the game with this DLC. While I really enjoy the idea of a character leveling up his gear through certain scenarios instead of just finding better or more suitable gear after harder fights, this also negates some of the to me core mechanics of the base game. So does the quick leveling if you play it as a solo run, making a lot of scenarios completely unnecessary, e.g. the quick thinking or even the lvl up a character after a boss fight. I understand that this character is supposed to be a different approach to the game, but it personally feels to me as if it isn't thought through completely, as big chunks of the game just feel... completely irrelevant now.

I also have yet to use the grenade in any meaningful way, stacking up powders to get stacks of overwhelm and as AOE damage just seems way more useful to me.

Another aspect that makes the dlc feel a little unfinished to me is the new fights. Both gear upgrade scenarios I encountered where basically the same? I randomly meet another guy involved with powder, who gets attacked, I save the Damsel in Distress and receive some gear from them in return. I don't know, I'm aware there's only so much you can do here, but it still seems... a little bland? And one of the new elite encounters, the flying knives one with the weasels didn't even have any story to it at all? I encountered the card, clicked on it, entered the fight and then it was over.

I imagined the warden might be a tricky enemy, since stacking up red powder agianst him is a bad move, but I found out that stacking up yellow powder and having him cripple himself whenever he moves works perfectly!

The Spymaster was, as usual, very simple. I still think I theoratically like the design idea, but I never struggled to not kill him within the first two rounds, more often than not in the first one without him being able to do anything at all. He's just a bit underwhelming.

The Prince might have been hard with the stamina debuff, but my setup made the fight very simple. The debuff wasn't as bad due to me having 13+3 stamina with lone wolf, more than enough armor due to lone wolf and armourer's mail, one of the upgraded equipments that give you half your boom stacks as armour every round, so stacking some up early in the fight gives you a lot of value for the rest of it. I also had 3 withdraw's, allowing me to evade most of the attacks and I had brawler to stack up anticipation.

Overall, the run was fun, the dlc is really not expensive for what it offers and I will play more, but I do think it could use some more work in my opinion.

Early Access Review

Etwas, was mir durchaus auffällt.
