This is the greatest shooter I've ever played.

Pros:
* Built on the source engine - if you have a computer built after 2005, you should be able to run it just fine.
* Workshop support - many mods to enhance and customize your game.
* Supportive/dedicated playerbase - you will meet and befriend many longtime players of this game.
* Encourages slow and steady approach - if you are coming from a fast paced shooter, you will die many many times. A death in this game is always a lesson.
* Just the right amount of advanced controls - There are shooters like Arma that bombard the player with controls. Other shooters don't add enough control for immersive gameplay. I think Insurgency hit the sweet spot with support for leaning, holding breath for better stability for sniping, and a slow walk for stealthy approaches.
* Massive amount of fun maps - Despite being 7 years old, more maps are coming out every week. Not only are they good challenging maps, but they are fun and balanced too. Multiple different modes spice things up and throw you off if you need a challenge.
* Dedicated Servers - feel like the current servers could mix things up with a new mod or gamemode? Make your own server and invite your friends.

Cons:
* Built on the source engine - while being a resource friendly game engine, it has it's limitations. Map sizes are restrained due to engine limitations and the graphics could be updated.
* Abandoned by the core developers - this becomes apparent when you start the game up and are greeted by a News section that never loads. The developers have moved on to their latest entry "Insurgency: Sandstorm."

Should you buy Insurgency or Insurgency: Sandstorm?
* After loving every minute of Insurgency and hearing a new entry with all the cons of Insurgency being addressed, naturally I was incredibly excited. Buying the beta version of Insurgency: Sandstorm, the game was plagued by performance issues. For reference, I'm running a GTX 1070 with an i7 8700 and I was consistently getting sub-40 FPS with constant frame time spikes. This is unacceptable for a modern shooter with those resources. Being hopeful by the news that the developers would address the performance issues months ago, I'm sad to say after giving the game another chance that no improvements can be seen. My advice is to give Insurgency: Sandstorm a try on a free weekend (which happens quite often) to see how it runs on your system. For me, though, I'm sticking with Insurgency.
