Early Access Review
Try this game. Highly recommend. There's a reason it has sold 4 million copies within a week and has overwhelming positive reviews. I originally didn't think I would like it because of the low res graphics and the words "early access viking survival game". But, after getting past the lack of customization during character creation, I didn't want to log out until I made the best base and explored and bopped every boss. For $20, this game is amazing value. Even at early access it runs better than other games I've played such as Fallout76 and ESO. There's not that much jankiness and I haven't encountered any gamebreaking bugs for the last 75 hours I've played. At this price point, you can get yourself and 2 other friends a copy, and it would be equivalent to a 40ish hour main story campaign from a typical $60 RPG. Valheim is much better with friends, but it is still really fun to play solo. I love that you can bring the same character across other people's worlds while keeping progression, and you can bring new characters to an existing server of yours. You can make a server private or open to the community when you launch it, and if you change your mind just change the settings or password again. The biomes are all fun to explore, the sailing is fun, the base building is fun, the material collection grind is fun. The game does so many things right, and does not punish the player like in other survival games. For example, when deconstructing you get all materials back, and if you don't eat food you are at 20 health. I can't believe a small dev team of 5 people made this game. It's like if Minecraft, Elder Scrolls, Breath of the Wild and Stardew Valley had a baby. There are some things that I don't like, such as the music getting too repetitive or some jankiness / lag, and weird physics. But none of them are too bad. The worst problem I've run into is when the server host has poor internet so the server goes down or gets laggy, but that is more of the host's internet problem. I wish the game had a cartography function where my friends can see parts of the map I've discovered, and I wish they had more music tracks. They could improve the textures and add more items and mobs. Overall though, after beating all of the bosses and seeing all of the biomes currently in the map, I cannot wait for them to finish the game. I will keep on base building and exploring in the meantime. The best part is I can go launch a new server again or make a new character or join other people anytime. This was a great idea from the devs. I hope they keep pumping out the content and they keep getting new players. Also, the community has been great so far, not much pvp mostly coop servers. And I want to add the game file size is only 1 GB, and the game can run on even potato computer setups. This has been my favorite $20 spent so far this year.
