Despite drawing numerous comparisons to Slay the Spire, Monster Train actually reminds me of something else; a long-forgotten PVP deckbuilding game named Infinity Wars. That game fell victim to a very turbulent development and got abandoned by it's creators, but when it was alive it was possibly the most innovative and enjoyable card video game out there, and I have to say Monster Train at least partially filled the hole it has left in my heart. It reimplemented a lot of ideas, such as mixed decks with at least two gimmicks to work together from each one and multi-zone battles.
It has everything you'd want from a deckbuilder and, simuntainously, everything you'd want from a roguelite; it's complex, it has a nigh infinite potential for creative combos, and yet is extremely easy to pick up. I've completed a run in the first hour, but it didn't at all make me stop playing, which is often the case with badly balanced rougelikes - this one seems to be much better in this regard. As far as this kind of games go, Monster Train really does seem to be up there. I hope there's more clans coming down the line, though - being locked to playing two decks really amps up how fast you'll be tired of seeing the same cards over and over again.
