I have played this game for much more than the time listed on my steam account, I have been playing since right before the release of the Stormblood expansion and all I can say is this is by far one of the best games you will ever play. It has a little something for everyone.
My boyfriend who played the very first release of it before it became A Realm Reborn, insisted I play it, even though I am not an mmo player, was fairly new to pc gaming and had the most HORRIBLE experience with WoW Warlords of Draenor.
Yet, despite all that, after two years of nay saying on my end, constant nagging on his, I gave it a shot. HE WAS RIGHT! It was a game even for my very noob self. I fell in love with the story IMMEDIATELY, grew to love and know the characters and my god the music is, well it is LIFE! I had played all the other FF's (barring 11) and loved them, but just refused to give this phenomenal one a chance simply because it was an MMO and waaaay out of my comfort zone.
It was a mistake and I wish I could go back and play it from it's absolute inception, because every release of a new expansion is like walking into a new chapter of your favorite world. Will someone you are attached to as a character die this time? Will the content be as thrilling or better? (P.S. it is always better! Idk how they do it, but it's ALWAYS better).
I was worried about the mechanics and being good enough, understanding everything that is needed and just so much else, but I shouldn't have been worried at all, the community for the most part is fantastic and they are sincere when they want to help. It's not a perfect community, none are, but it has so many good people in it that the occasional turd you encounter doesn't really detract from the game. I have made so many friends through this game that I am IRL friends with now, have known them for years and we play other games together now too.
My boyfriend was the hardcore raider (I am not), but it had other things I enjoyed like crafting, designing and so many various other side things to do like weapon grind and the gold saucer. Eventually you got a restoration project area and now an island, but before that it was doing older content and side story stuff that made it very appealing to me at the time.
He did finally convince me to give Savage raiding a chance and believe it or not, I did like it and turned out to be a raider just like him.
I guess what I really want to say about this game is, unless you are absolutely against being social and playing games that, for the most part have an end game, but it isn't the focus, then this game is something you should give a chance, it's worth every moment spent in my opinion. And maybe if all you're looking for is some cool people to go on an adventure with who become your friends, then this solidly delivers on that. It still holds faithful to the original purpose of an MMORPG, the social aspect.
