Insane how much keeps getting added for free. Even if you come into it thinking there's no real GAME as much as it's a space sandbox to play in, you can still occupy yourself with so many different tasks that you will find something fun to do either way. I haven't even touched much of the main campaign OR the multiplayer quests and easily feel I've gotten excellent value, and I'll be strapping on the VR helmet too for another side of the experience. Works great on steam deck, if slightly stuttery in planet/space transitions.

There aren't a lot of games that gave me the wonder and excitement of discovery like the first Subnautica did. This game comes very close. The art and mechanics of the world feel very similar, but per the nature of the game much more desolate. It feels a little lonely but your role is so much more important because of it. The progress loop is incredibly satisfying, very well tuned to always be on the brink of the next exciting advancement, and almost perfectly paced. I actually think it almost moves too quickly at times, when I almost feel like the world is owed a bit more time to cook with each step along the way.

There was a moment ~6 hours in when I returned from a resource gathering expedition and what I saw around my young base made me genuinely pause and gasp, then smile with delight. Having an affect on the world and seeing it change on such a grand scale is truly satisfying.

For such a small team, it's nothing short of amazing how good this feels. It's not as polished as a large team AAA title but it only takes minutes to have forgotten all that.

I can't wait to see where this goes and am looking forward to restarting on a more punishing difficulty just to really feel the weight of the world as I turn it into something beautiful and my own.
