I only recommend this game if you're a big fan of Doom and want to experience what the predecessor was like. Otherwise, it's quite outdated. It's fun and interesting at first, but 60 levels is way too much (that's one more than Doom and Doom 2 combined!), there is just not enough variation to keep you interested for that long. I personally got exhausted around halfway through, but I pushed through it. At least the final episode has a treat in the form of an ultra-difficult secret level. I recommend using the ECWolf source port for its improved quality-of-life, it automatically detects your Wolfenstein 3D installation on steam.

This is a genuinely worthy spiritual successor of Getting Over It.

A pretty spooky game, the sound is most of what makes the game scary, but there are physical threats as well. The sanity effects are cool and they keep going for a while. Beating the game is not difficult once you know exactly what to do (though I could have just gotten lucky with the randomly generated level).

However, the gameplay loop is very simple and can get monotonous, so it takes some patience to go through and is probably not very exciting to some people. And after you beat the game once, you're pretty much done with it unless you really want to improve your best time and/or distance.

It took me about 30 minutes in total to beat it, so you'll probably get about 1 hour of playtime out of this little demo at most, unless you speedrun it or whatever. Still, there's some surprises along the way.

I got this for free some time ago, and it was my first time using any engine/software at all to make games, excluding a severely botched attempt at using a free version of GameMaker years ago, and all my time trying to make cool levels in LittleBigPlanet 2 and failing at them... a little less hard.

After binging through some game development-related content on YouTube, I thought, why not finally try out the thing I've been so desperately dreaming about all these years?

AppGameKit is not as fancy as the other usual game development software out there, especially without any DLC. It's purely text-based (without the Visual Editor DLC), and forces you to launch your game every time you want to see how whatever you just typed in the code has changed it.

Despite these... shortcomings, it's been the perfect tool for me to really get excited about making games, and gave me a first feel of what coding might be like (even if simple). The coding/scripting language was easy to learn with a few video tutorial (C++ is also an option). I'm keeping my ideas simple for now, though.

This review is as much of a story as it is an actual review. You can try it out as your first game engine/software if you're okay with learning some simple coding through some video tutorials before really doing anything yourself, but engines like GameMaker Studio 2 and Clickteam Fusion 2.5 have visual programming systems that would likely be much more enjoyable for a person who has never coded anything, so I'd recommend those instead.

Got this for free, so I can't really complain, but I will likely switch over to something else soon, depending on how long my game making journey will continue. I'm actually on a quest to try out a few different engines right now, actually.

I hope to see you playing my upcoming platformer game! Just kidding, that game will never become public.

Maybe.

it's supposed to be a speedrunning game, but the movement and gameplay is painfully slow. there is barely any room for any speedrunning.

most of the levels are practically just copies of eachother.

horrible menu controls. no quick restart.

also 70 fov.
