This is a testament built upon years of iteration after iteration to FromSoftware's iconic Dark Souls formula (along with Sekiro and Bloodborne) and it is simultaneously the most challenging yet approachable entry in their library in my opinion. The sense of exploration you get in the world is fantastic, very much picks up on the sense of wonder and exploration found from titles like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

There's a lot of gameplay mechanics under the hood that the game doesn't like to outright explain which can feel very daunting to people new to the franchise but if you're struggling, a quick tutorial online will see you through. Basically, the game doesn't like to hold your hand but the sense of accomplishment you get from overcoming various hurdles is amazing.

Just waiting on a sequel. Any day now. Aaaaaaany day now.

In all seriousness, it can be a little offputting at first to some folks, especially those unfamiliar with the genre (especially old-school castlevania games) but it's super fun and addicting. Perhaps a bit niche to some but it fills that niche quite well and I really just want a sequel so badly.

So far I'm quite enjoying the game. It's definitely "niche" but if you know what you're in for, you'll have a good time. I've followed Yahtzee around for a long time so I'm perhaps a bit biased towards his work but I definitely recommend it based on what I've played so far.

Your friends will kill you more than the enemy. And that's part of why it's so fun.

If you liked Vampire Survivors, you'll like this game. Funny humor (albeit crass, so if you take umbrage with jokes about boners and innuendos, beware), fantastic gameplay, and a soundtrack that has no right being such a banger.

I strongly recommend using a controller over mouse & keyboard, but you can manage if you're really against controllers for some reason.

It's like classic Battlefield games without the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of newer Battlefields. If you can look past the roblox-esque graphics, there's an extremely tight and buttery-smooth shooter underneath. The voice-chat is great.

They've also been pretty great with the updates and quickly patching issues, very responsive so far.
It does a few unique things that set it apart well enough, I won't go into full detail here but just to list a few:

Reload Mechanics
When swapping magazines, it doesn't automatically consolidate your remaining ammo. If you swapped out a mag with 5 bullets left, that mag with 5 bullets stays in your inventory. You can quickly reload by rapidly tapping the reload button which tosses your old mag on the ground, allowing you to reload quickly but at the cost of ammo you can pick up the magazine off the ground though if you pay attention and don't die).

Voice chat
There is proximity-based voice chat, allowing you to not only communicate with friendlies outside of your squad but to also overhear nearby enemies as well. If this annoys you too much, you can opt out of it, y'know, if you hate fun, I suppose.

It's a masterpiece and an homage to old-school RPGs with a satisfying turn-based combat system that rewards skillful play over grinding (you actually don't level up in the traditional sense, you improve your stats by getting better gear, upgrading it, and gaining skill points (called grimoire shards) from defeating bosses).

It's a colorful and charming world and it keeps throwing stuff at you even until the end of the game. It starts somewhat linear to let you get used to the game before it eventually starts opening up the whole world and whatnot.

The story is also just top-notch. I was quite invested and there were twists that I didn't see coming (and I'm normally pretty good at picking up on those).

What few nitpicks I could have about this game are vastly overshadowed by everything that's good about this game. If they make a sequel (which I REALLY hope they do), I'll be buying it immediately.

In terms of game length, I was able beat the story in about 70-ish hours. For full sidequest and 100% achievements, you can knock it out in about 100 hours, easy.

If you're a fan of RPGs, charming worlds, and turn-based combat, do yourself and favor and buy this game already.

When I first saw this game announced for the PS4, I was honestly quite skeptical but I'm glad to be wrong.

At the time, it just looked to me like another Ubisoft-style "open-world action adventure with crafting elements" game with a bunch of the same tired gimmicks we've seen done too many times. And one could argue that still but I would say that it does what it wants to do well enough that I had no complaints about it.

Gameplay is fun, story is much more compelling than I initially thought it would be, etc., though I honestly recommend playing it on hard first if you're familiar with games like this. It's what I did and it was a pretty satisfying experience. It made the giant robot dinosaurs feel more like they should feel to fight.

I also recommend using mouse and keyboard for the finer aiming but you'll be just fine with controller. Overall, not the worst port. That being said, it would be neat if it didn't try to "optimize the shaders" every single time I open the bloody game, but other than that, I didn't notice toooooo many bugs or issues.

It's been many years since the first game (which was an absolute cult classic) and so far, this game is proving to be quite a worthy sequel. I'm having a blast with it and have no complaints so far.
