You start the game with like $30k. Your amateur 34 year old defender will ask for $33k to sign a new 1 year contract.

I regret that this situation appeared to be critical for you. I know that some players have problems with figuring out the game's economy but when they do, they have a lot of fun.

It's a management game where the economy is a crucial factor.

Early, when you are playing in the lower leagues, your main source of profit is selling footballers. You can earn huge money by buying or getting from Youth Academy a promised young footballer and then selling him when he learned 1-2 skills and got some playing experience.

At the same time, the more experience the footballer earns (and the more skills he knows), the more demanding he becomes. So if you are a lower ranking club, you might not afford such a footballer.

Therefore, it's important to strategize you buys and sell. You can (and should) plan beforehand what footballer is going to be sold in 1-2 seasons, and who will play with you for a long time. When you see that you have a future star, and your club isn't good enough to keep him, that's a great idea to sell him so you have enough money to buy 1-2 prospects and improve your club infrastructure.

I hope that helps.
