If you enjoyed Baldur's Gate 1/2, or are a fan of D&D, you will enjoy this game. I can check both of those boxes so this game was a no-brainer for me. If you have never played a title like this or are unfamiliar with the rule sets form tabletop RPGs (D&D, Pathfinder, etc.), fear not. The game seems to do a pretty good job of instructing you. There are both good and not-so-good things that I've seen and/or experienced in the current (pre-launch) version. There has been staggeringly more good than bad, IMO. Here's some of the key points:

The good-

The story is captivating. I found myself wanting to get through combat just so I can find out what's about to happen next.

The combat is amazing and unforgiving. You could replay the same encounters and it would almost always be unique.

The voice acting and accompanying character animations give a very believable sense of emotion and purpose. There are several NPCs that I've kept in the party because they are powerhouses... but I really really really want to stab them in the face.. cause they're D!@#s.


The not-so-good-

The camera controls can be a little difficult at times and occasionally I have to re-center the camera. You're playing multiple pieces on a game board. If you keep than in mind, it becomes easier to perceive. Remember: perspective matters. Just because you can see it, doesn't mean one or more of the characters can.

Combat can be infuriating. Even when you think you've mastered an encounter or expertly utilized the classes in your party- the enemy can be ruthless. (playing on classic difficulty)

You may often feel like you're crawling your way through your adventure. There's an absolute ton on dialogue and possibilities from what I've seen in the game so far. The main story points you in the right direction but the side content isn't easily on display so you'll be talking and clicking on everyone/everything.

You'll want to do your research. There are plenty of race/class/spell combos to play with. While that sounds great, it can also be a recipe for disaster.


Personally, I recommend this game. Smells like GOTY.
