Chaos was the original state of the universe, when there was no light, no darkness, no life, no rules and laws. And the creation of the world, from the point of view of the ancient Greeks, represented a transition from chaos (disorder) to space (order).
Mathematics was one of the examples of an ideal order, a complete "cosmos" for the ancient Greeks. Pythagoras created a whole philosophical system in which the main place was occupied by "divine numbers". "In mathematics," Pythagoras said, "there is no place for chaos, that is, randomness and lawlessness. This means that people must live by the laws.
