This game scratches an itch. If you played Digimon World for PlayStation 1 and are nostalgic, this game can provide memories and a fun time playing through it. It mechanically works okay but doesn't hold your hand. This game is not cyber sleuth, for better or worse. It focuses more on the upgrading of your town and the raising of Digimon. There are no periods where you are playing mashing through text. That said, the battling is less attractive than cyber sleuth. I hope they take the best of both games and combine them. As a fan, I enjoyed the game a lot and can't wait for my next visit to the Digimon world franchise. I hope they spend more time polishing the world and showing that they care about the source material they are pulling from.

These are my first impressions after playing the tutorial and the first couple of missions afterward. Why write a review that soon? Sadly, I'm unsure how much longer I will keep playing.

As others have stated, you will recognize most things if you've played Xenonauts or XCOM. The setup is familiar - you're defending Earth from an alien invasion, and you need to build bases and launch interceptors to bring down UFOs and send tactical teams to deal with alien incursions. There's nothing flawed with that; the formula worked well before, and a few minor changes here and a new twist there can turn it into a fresh experience.

However... as you've probably surmised, a few issues could also be improved for the experience.

In short, the game improves on the first game in some ways but is a downgrade in other ways. It feels less refined, which might change since it is still developing. Still, the graphics are less appealing to me than the original and have a cartoonish feel. The load times are worse, and the gameplay feels kludgier.

On the plus side, there are improvements to gameplay; you can rotate the camera, have different firing modes, and preview hit chances after moving - all good things, but not enough to overcome the awkward gameplay in general.

This is sad, as I was excited about this game. It could still deliver with updates, and I rate it as 60/100 mainly because there is promise here of a good game. In the meantime, Phoenix Point is a better modern XCOM-style game - or just another game of the original Xenonauts!

Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, Starring Lara Croft, clearly does what it says on the tin, presenting the first three adventures of the famous heroine with some optional improvements to help them shine a little brighter. These games have a feel and logic, and those wading into them for the first time might find them hard to wrap their heads around. For better or worse, this is the original Tomb Raider trilogy, and if you’re going to play them, this is the best way to do it. There are a few bugs to address, and it really needs a brightness setting for the modern visuals, but otherwise, I can’t find much to complain about here that isn’t endemic to the original games. A long story short, the real Lara is back!

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Ultimate Edition is a beautiful little gem, albeit imperfect. I confirm the fixed camera is annoying initially, but I've gotten used to it after 4-5 hours in the game. I even started to appreciate that all the superb scenery was always put in the best perspective. This is also the time needed to enjoy the game mechanics: having played the original (2D) Castelvanias, I found many similarities: For example, the whips and other powers, the breakable object giving small collectibles, how some parts of the games are not accessible until you get the right power (a great feature - although limited compared to early Castlevania) The game is epic, with an excellent soundtrack and theatrical storytelling (sometimes a bit exaggerated :) and God of War like boss fights are stunningly beautiful and exciting. I enjoyed the game and recommend it to the Castlevania franchise fans and the God of Wars fans, especially if you can buy it at a discount.

Like the first game, the combat arenas are spaced out nicely, with a decent focus on dialogue and exposition scenes. These sections of the game highlight Jackie's voice actor, Brian Bloom, the same guy who voices BJ Blazkowicz. I feel that he gives Jackie more of an emotional range than the previous game, which helps add to Jackie's already compelling character. At various points in the game, Jackie suffers from these visions where he sees Jenny, and it becomes clear that Jackie is still trying to cope with the violent death of his girlfriend. Instead of a World War 1 interlude in the first game, The Darkness 2 features these story pieces where Jackie is committed to an asylum with family members appearing as either patients or staff members. These parts of the story occur whenever Jackie is brutally injured, and they stood out to me because it sewed some doubt in the back of my mind as to what timeline was the real one. We've learned that the Darkness can make its host hallucinate. Couple that with all of the emotional trauma and injuries Jackie has suffered, and it's not unreasonable to assume that Jackie is committed to a mental asylum and the crime family timeline is all in his head.
While the story may not be some intricately woven, mind-melter of a story, it's still a great one that's easy to follow and hooked me the entire way through the game. The combat loop in this game is much improved over the previous one. The main attraction is going to be your Darkness powers. This time, the game features a skill tree that you can sink "Essence" points into and ties into the game's points system. It features a more arcade-style FPS, where scores pop up on the screen for kills, headshots, and various execution moves you can pull off using your Darkness powers. These upgrades emphasize the potential power you can wield with the Darkness, something that the first game largely missed out on. You can acquire skills to pull off various executions that regenerate your health, ammo, and other abilities.
The executions are Jackie pulling off glory kills, and they're all well-animated and incredibly gory and violent. The enemy variety has also seen enormous movement improvements and helps add more depth to the combat. Certain enemies will rush you with melee weapons, and some shoot at you. At the same time, behind cover, others will teleport around the arena and are a massive pain in the ass; some enemies carry shields that need to be broken down, stun-locked, or distracted using "Swarm" before being killed. You've got enemies with some leash that can take your weapon away, and you got some annoying bastard that shines a spotlight on you, nullifying your Darkness powers. This all means that you have to be able to prioritize your targets depending on what gets thrown at you from one combat arena to another. I generally went after the spotlight enemies first so my Darkness powers could be used as often as possible. The leash enemies are better off being killed at a more extended range. I found myself using "Swarm" the most often on shielded enemies since they can also distract other nearby enemies, sometimes offering a brief reprieve from the combat. Graphically, I was surprised to see the game use the cell-shaded art style akin to the Borderlands and Telltale games. This is a noticeable departure from the previous game, where the art style felt more grounded in reality. The overall atmosphere is better in the first game, but the art direction in The Darkness 2 still works well and helps future-proof the game graphically. On a technical level, The Darkness 2 is fine. The loading times are short and are disguised well enough using cinematic sequences. The framerate remains steady, with no noticeable dips during combat. I had no crashes to the dashboard or any soft locks. I did experience enemies clipping into a wall or through a floor once, but that was about it.
On the whole, it's a good-looking, polished game. Voice acting is well done, and the lines feel well-paced and delivered naturally. I like Brian Bloom as the voice of Jackie, and Mike Patton returning as the voice of the Darkness is the standout performer here. He nails the tone of the Darkness, being this malevolent, kill-hungry entity that dominates its host. Overall, The Darkness 2 is a great game that was a pleasant surprise for me. The combat and movement are vastly improved, and your Darkness abilities feel much more powerful and satisfying, offering plenty of cathartic, power fantasy moments. The story kept me hooked, and I dig the different take on the game's art direction.

The story is nothing short of a captivating masterpiece, weaving together mystery and emotions in a way that instantly captivated me. From the beginning, I immersed myself in its intricate narrative, drawn into a world of intrigue and suspense that kept me eagerly playing. The characters are richly developed, each with complexities and hidden depths, making every decision I make feel genuinely impactful. The gameplay mechanics are flawlessly executed, seamlessly merging storytelling with player agency. As I navigated the choices and dilemmas presented in the game, I felt a profound sense of connection to the characters and their struggles. Every decision felt weighty, reminding me of the power of choice in shaping the story's outcome. The way the game responds to these choices, tailoring the experience to my decisions, showcases the incredible craftsmanship behind "The Wolf Among Us.". While Telltale Games has produced numerous remarkable titles, it's clear that "The Wolf Among Us" is a shining gem in their collection. Its ability to elicit strong emotions, keep players engaged, and offer a truly immersive experience is a testament to the artistry of game development. This game has left a lasting impact on me and solidified itself as a true masterpiece in interactive storytelling. I hope we see the second game sooner rather than later.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is a decent game. It's not as good as GTA IV, but it's still a solid game. To summarize, this game is a mixture between the GTA and the Batman Arkham series in terms of gameplay. The mission structure, driving, etc., resembles GTA, whereas the combat reminds me of Batman; yes, you can use firearms, but there is an apparent stress in martial arts. Nothing is good about this game. The graphics are decent, and the city looks good; I'll say it looks quite like the real one, so the setting is perfect. The gameplay is smooth and good; it is just lovely to play.
The storyline is nothing out of the ordinary, and although not overly surprising, it works well. I mean, it's a classic undercover cop/mafia story with likable characters, so if you like that kind of thing, then you'll be all right with it.

Bad things!? Hmm what can I say? This game doesn't have terrible things; it is well-made. However, there are a couple of things that could be better. One of them is the music. It works well with the setting (music in Chinese, etc.), but it isn't excellent and feels relatively homogenous. GTA IV, for example, has a superb selection of music, and there are also other things, like the crazy radio programs, that help with the setting; I miss the equivalent in Sleeping Dogs. Also, as mentioned above, the map is well-made, detailed, and credible. Still, it could have been more extensive and different in the different areas. It's all city areas that are different between them but not too much (except the financial quarter), why not a bit of city outskirts? Bit of countryside or something. Overall, this is quite a good game, and I would recommend it to people who like this kind of game; avoid comparisons, and you'll see that this is quite a great game.

Unepic is a 2d Metroidvania RPG initially released in 2014 on Steam. You are playing as Daniel, an average guy who decides to use the bathroom in the middle of a beer-swaddled game of Dungeons and Dragons with his mates. While in the middle of using the pot, someone turns out the lights; when they come back on, Danny Boy is no longer in his mediocre life but in a cavernous dungeon filled with demons, weapons, and magic. As a typical side-scrolling platformer, you can move, jump, use your weapon, and have an action button. Which works for interacting with different parts of the environment, picking up loot, and using weapons you find around the dungeon for other enemies or environmental hurdles. Swords are great for slicing through mutant grubs, maces, smash barrels, and stone projectiles, and using a bow is excellent for those lunging slithery snakes or hard-to-see bats, as the game doesn’t pause.

In contrast, in the menu, like most games, navigating your way to your inventory to choose a new weapon can be a pretty risky maneuver. Fortunately, with a fantastic inventory quick select system, in which you can map any inventory item to a button combo, it’s easy to switch from dagger to wand to halo in a flash. While it doesn’t make the game’s heads-up display lovely, its function does the job. Oh, Danny Boy! From Star Wars to Harry Potter, Unepic indeed drops in enough funny references to keep the average nerd laughing and leaning into the fact that Daniel, the main character, knows tons about geek games and movies, that it breaks the fourth wall and allows you to relate with him even more. While most video game stories are cliche and predictable, Unepic realizes it is cliche and leans into it. In the beginning, you are possessed by a faceless soul who continuously wishes for your demise so that he can be freed. As a result, he is always leading you to your death, so when reaching a fork in the road where you have to decide to trust someone or not, if you do the opposite of what he tells you, it’s pretty much a safe bet you made the right decision.

Unlike most metroidvanias, you don’t learn new skills to open up new map sections. Instead, you find less rewarding keys as they rob you of that sense of discovery when you try a new skill in a new section of the map. Remembering where the library and sewer are can save you time from wandering around when you find a new key. Combat in Unepic is just that, Unepic. Mashing the attack button swings your axe, sword, or mace, while holding it also fires your bow. Unfortunately, lacking a dodge roll or block makes the combat feel bland when getting into the thick of battle. Unepic is a solid indie 2d Metroidvania with a great loot and progression system, but it lacks moment-to-moment gameplay and overall polish. If you have an interest in the genre, you can buy it blindfolded.

Indeed, it is a fantastic game. What sets this apart from so many other games? Love. You can see it; you can feel it when you play. Why is that? One guy made it. It's not some corporate tool bag—one fella with drive, creativity, and love. Of course, one guy can't do everything. The voice talent is top-notch, and the writing, for that matter, is fantastic. You can see the influence of historical games like Castlevania's energy-restoring fully cooked meat in a breakable wall and the Metroid-Blaster Masteresque notion of gaining power-ups to proceed to previously unreachable parts. I'd go so far as to suggest that Out of This World was an influence; if you've beaten that game and you get to the end of Dust, you'll know what I mean. The animations are excellent; the slash-combat is endlessly satisfying. The dash ability is beneficial without complicated fighting mechanics (that other games seem bent on doing). The music is precisely what this game calls for. It is well done and harnesses the nuances the game world seems to desire. It's simple: do you like memorable games? Get this. You won't be disappointed. You'll be elated.

It's a great collection of old Capcom classics. For around $2 per game, you get approximately 30 games from the early days up to the early 2000s, like Progear. What you get are primarily great entries, but there's some unnecessary overlap with the three versions of Street Fighter 2, and the variety of gameplay is reduced to platforming, shmups, fighting, and beat them-ups, with an emphasis on shmups and beat-them-ups. The available game modes are fun and offer an element of score-chasing as if you were really in the arcade. The fact that each game is presented on a cabinet of your choice helps with options to change filters, cabinet type, or the usual on-screen presentation with border images. Some of the older games have poor scaling and don't fill the screen space as much as they should, and you can see that some games have moderate emulation issues. But these are not very annoying things. Still, as a relatively casual gamer, I found most games decent. Overall, it's an excellent collection of games with a few issues, and it is priced reasonably, even before any sales. If you are a retro gamer, this package you will be noticed. Give it a chance.
