Early Access Review
Exactly what it says on the cover; be a dog that blows things up with giant guns.

The biggest downside is the lack of ability to customise keyboard controls to my preferred set, however the defaults aren't completely terrible and once you get use to it its easy to play.

Upside is the game has a very straight forward play cycle, that doesn't try to be too much beyond an easy stress relief of blowing up enemies while simultaneously not getting blown up.

A good game for non-committal stress relief that's easy to get into and learn, combined with a cute theme and an easy gameplay cycle. Would recommend for anyone looking for an easy way to kill time.

As an MMORPG FFXIV is a terribly designed game, with huge barriers to entry for new players.
Many early base game and earlier expansion content links main story progression to dungeons, which has resulted in me spending over 2 hours in a dungeon queue just to progress a single quest and allow me to continue the game. I've never experienced one that's 2 hours long before, or anything an hour or more really. Nor have I encountered ANY MMO that bars MSQ progression behind a dungeon queue, especially for non current content.
Many of the times where there weren't long queues were for scaled dungeons that were on weekly rotations, which often resulted in end-game players completing the dungeons as quickly as possible, which while efficient often meant that I was left straggling behind with no clue what was happening. It's nice being carried, but being lost for all of a dungeon isn't that fun.

Also story presentation in the game so far has been terrible for an MMO. It relies far too much on cutscenes, which is probably the worse way to present stories in multiplayer content. Cutscenes should be limited to pivotal cinematic moments at critical junctures in the plot arcs, not every second conversation. Its not just jarring to the experience, but affects the experience of playing and experiencing the game with people. Even single player games rarely have so many cutscenes tbh, for good reason. It turns the game away from being story driven, into a cinematic experience.

Combine this with the 100's of small, often tedious, quests that make up the main story, and you get an unengaging and slow leveling experience that is less interesting that watching a random TV show on Netflix.

I have not gotten to endgame for FFXIV, simply because I find it too frustratingly painful. I have a few veteran friends who play the game though, and love it, and when asked what separates the endgame from any other MMO, they literally said nothing and that if I want an MMO experience for endgame I may as well play WoW.

If you want to play a co-operative story experience with a small group of friends, maybe you could have fun playing this game. If you want an MMORPG however, I strongly advice you go elsewhere.

The concept of the game is cool, and it well built generally. The issue I find with it is the amount of content. I finished the game in just under 3 hours - and I wasn't even trying to do it fast. For the amount its being sold for it is a severe disappointment. Would not recommend unless you have a lot of money to throw away or it is drastically reduced in price.
