I often describe Stellaris as "Civilization in space" but it's so much more than that. You're not just expanding your territory, engaging in diplomacy, researching tech, and building up your planets, but also encountering random story-lines that can wildly change your plans for your play.

Each game has the potential to end up looking like almost any established sci-fi universe, depending on how things go. "Fallen Empires" may rise up to battle each other and demand you choose a side, like (SPOILERS) Babylon 5's Shadows and Vorlons. Or perhaps you'll created some kind of Federation of allies and engage in a cold-war against other, more hostile entities.

You can completely customize both your alien species and its culture to create what you want and then throw it into a hostile galaxy, trying to find its way.

I've played this since launch (when it was, admittedly, almost impossible to "win", but was still enjoyable) and its DLC and patches have improved it more and more over time.

Great game, highly recommended!
