Wanted to refund this game but since I opened the packs you got with it you're not eligible for a refund. Thanks for abusing your own system Valve, you money hoarding greedy bastards. The Valve of old days are truly dead.

Eh it's alright, a bit too short but it's free and good for what it is.

Now this, this is beautiful.

I never really grew up with platformers when I was a child, the only thing close to a platformer i played was the Sly series on my PS2 so I don't really have any nostalgia for collectathon platformers like Banjo Kazooie and Crash Bandicoot so this review comes from someone without any nostalgia goggles for these kind of games.

This game is simply brilliant, almost everything about it is great. The graphics are pretty good and the stylish cartoony look of the game is brilliant, the characters you meet on the way are memorable and unique, the voice acting is great overall and absolutely brilliant in chapter 2 and 3, the level design is great and never gets repetive, the gameplay is fast paced and fun to play and the soundtrack is just simply amazing.

The story isn't anything really advanced but it doesn't need to be, you only really need an excuse to get out there and collect your items needed for the 100% completion. But that doesn't mean that you should just ignore it because what little story there is is kinda cute and interesting and becomes better thanks to the colorful cast of characters you meet on the way. There are even collectibles hidden away in every chapters unique purple time rift that tells a short comic book story about what happened that makes the world in that chapter and the characters in it the way they are.

What makes this game so much fun to play though must be the movement. Hat Kid has a big arsenal of movement abilities at her disposal and exploring each level is so much fun thanks to fluid the controls are and how fun it is to combo together moves to reach a certain platform with a collectible on it. What expands this even more is all the hats you can collect to unlock certain abilities that help you in fighting enemies or traverse the enviroment in new fun ways. There's the hat you begin the game with called the Kid's Hat and it gives you the ability to look at where you need to go in the level to progress, there's the Sprint Hat that gives you the ability to run even faster and jump farther to reach platforms you couldn't reach before, there's the Brewing Hat that gives you the ability to pull out an explosive potion that can destroy certain objects or do AOE damage on enemies, there's the Ice Hat that gives you the ability to use certain launch pad labeled with a Snow Flake icon to launch yourself to otherwise unreachable places, there's the Dweller Mask that makes certain transparent platforms solid so you can traverse them and there's the Time Stop Hat that temporarily stops time for you. You can tweak your gameplay experience a tiny bit more too with badges that you can buy that you put on your hat to give you certain abilities you either need to complete the game or just something to suit your fancy.

Now so far it sounds like this game is nothing but perfect and it almost is but there are some few problems here and there that are noticable and can be annoying and the two biggest problems I had where some bugs and the camera. Now I don't know why the developers decided to be so restrictive with the camera because in other platformers I've played you pretty much get free range with what you can do with the camera, if I need to look above me to see what's up there I can in any other platformer but not in A Hat In Time for some reason. Several times I've run into that problem where I needed to look above to see what's up there but just not being able too because of the restrictive camera controls. If they would update the game to give the player more control over the camera I think a lot of people would get happy because that's something I just don't understand why it's not in the game. When it comes to the bugs it has for the most part not been that awful, the biggest one I had was a hardcrash to desktop early on in the game but thankfully that only happened once, other bugs I encountered were that some command prompts did not appear when they should have and resulting in me taking damage, the jumping around could sometimes be a little glitchy too and there are some times where I even ended up outside of the map. Thankfully all this happened rarely and my journey through this game was 99% of the time smooth as butter.

Another strange thing in this game is that most of the faces on the characters in the game don't have their face modeled on and instead the developers have plastered on a .PNG that hovers slight infront of their face. Now it looks fine most of the time but in certain angles from the side the face disappears and all you have left is a faceless model and sometimes the .PNG even clips through some things on the model. This is just a really minor complaint and really don't impact anything about the game. The last things I want to talk about that could have improved the game slightly more is that the game is really easy, I barely died in this game and when I did it was to either some bug or me just being lazy and seeing how quickly and recklessly I could complete the platforming session, and when you do die you don't even have to restart the level, you only need to retry from the last checkpoint most of the time which is also where you end up when you fall down from the platforming session. The bosses are pretty easy too but that doesn't mean they are bad, all of them have some gimmick you need to figure out to beat them and when you do figure it out it is fun but I think the bosses could still be slightly harder and not so forgiving when it comes to player mistakes. The last boss in the game is especially very easy and I was a bit disappointed with it overall. The other thing that could seriously benefit from a difficulty increase is the collecting in the game, the only thing you need to collect to get a 100% in the game are the Time Pieces which are very easy to get, you get one for every act you do in each chapter and if you complete every act in every chapter plus every time rift in each chapter you will get them all with minimum effort. Now compare this game to another game that I have completed to a 100% like Ty The Tasmanian Tiger 1 then you can see how really easy this game is, in Ty 1 you need to find over 300 hundred picture frames scattered around and hidden on every level, you need to get every Boomerang in the game, find all the Golden Cogs, save all the Bilbies and much much more. There's a lot of stuff to find and collect in that game and it takes some real effort and it feels super rewarding once you do it, a feeling that is sadly not here in A Hat In Time. Also some things in this game feels kinda out of place and that is blood that they decided would be appropriate in a few places and I mean FEW places, there's like two times blood is on the screen which feels weird thank to the games cartoony friendly aesthetic. Plus in one of the purple time warps in a hidden area there is a book that is called something like "Good ethic reasons for capitalist consumption" and it's followed by "All the pages are blank", now I don't know why there's socialist propaganda in my cartoony platformer collectathon game about a space traveling girl with magical hats but that definitely broke my immersion by reminding me of all the terrible things in this world.

Even though I have some complaints about the game that I think could have improved the experience much more I still think that this game is really really phenomenal and worth your time and money, even on full asking price it's worth every cent and I don't regret my purchase at all. This game is definitely a contender for my game of the year award and I'm sure I'll play it again some day when they've added more content and fixed up the game more.

tl;dr
Positive:
+Great gameplay
+Colorful and nice graphics
+Great characters
+Great voice acting
+Cute as all hell
+Amazing soundtrack

Negative:
-Stiff and restrictive camera controls
-Some unpolished bugs
-Too easy
-Could use better faces

A really big letdown, I've pretty much loved Jackbox Party Pack 1 to 3 but Jackbox Party Pack 4 is not really any fun at all.

Fibbage 3: Fibbage 3 is pretty good because it's Fibbage, how do you screw that up. If you have run out of questions on Fibbage 1 and 2 you might wanna get this game just for this one.

Survive The Internet: This one is one of the better ones in the pack, some laughs were had but overall it's not that good compared to other games like Quiplash.

Monster Seeking Monster: Dreadfully boring, really really simple and not much going on. If you have a super dedicated group of friends you might get some slight fun out of it or you can just buy a physical copy of Werewolf which is superior in every way and much much more fun.

Bracketeering: Just a modified version of Quiplash, I think this could just have been a gamemode for an upcoming Quiplash since it's almost identical in gameplay and inferior in almost every way compared to Quiplash 1 and 2.

Civic Doodle: Was really fun in the beginning but every game turns out the same, every drawing ends up a mess and after a few goes it just became really boring and painfully slow. Bidiots or Drawful are better in every way and have much more going for them too.

I doubt any of my friends would like to play any of these ever again with an exception for Fibbage 3 and maybe Survive The Internet, all the other games are inferior to other games already avaible in much better packs. Get Jackbox Party Pack 2 for a much more hilarious and engaging experience. Fibbage 3 and Survive The Internet are just not worth the asking price since you can get Fibbage 1 and 2 in much more superior packs and Survive The Internet is not that good either.

♥♥♥♥ you Valve, ♥♥♥♥ you

The Half-Life series is one of the greatest mankind has ever seen and for so long you where one of the most beloved video game companies on earth, you've given us so many fantastic experiences like Portal, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress and the now confirmed dead Half-Life. It's been ten long years of almost nothing but silence and the long awaited Half-Life 3 ended up in a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥ pastebin from someone who still very much cares about the Half-Life story, unlike you Valve. While other companies milked their fans and stole their money with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ half assed products you've always put quality first but those days are long gone. Don't expect any great games from Valve anymore, Dota 2, CS:GO and Steam gives them so much money and that fat lard want nothing else than it to stay that way, and now we're getting a Dota card game so Valve can earn even more money and get even more stupidly rich.

You've given the middle finger to your most loyal fans for too long Valve and these news that Half-Life is dead is the icing on the cake, I'll start supporting other companies like GOG.com more now in the future since you don't deserve my money. Go to hell Valve, rest in peace Gordon Freeman.
