"Darkest Dungeon is about making the best of a bad situation."

I think what this is trying to say is that you get some candles even when you lose but you can only progress when everything goes right. Even in a perfect run with all positive relationships and fully geared characters the boss can still wipe you if you get a couple misses on your turn. There's not making the most of a wipe on the final boss. You just have to do it again and hope that RNGesus is on your side.

Making the most of a bad situation means dealing with adversity and setbacks in an ongoing campaign. I believe this applied more to the first game. In DD2 the rogue-like design just means bashing your head at it over and over until you get the right run that results in finally beating the boss. There are no setbacks. Just start over.
