Warframe is one of those games that you either love or hate.

Warframe is a mission-based looter shooter style game. Unlike most looter shooters, a specific weapon's base stats are the same for everyone who owns it; it's how you mod your weapons and warframes that makes the difference.

Having said that, there are multiple progression systems in place in the game:

  • The game has a starchart that you progress through. Enemy difficulty goes up the farther you get from Earth.
  • Stronger weapons have mastery rank requirements; you gain mastery ranks by leveling up weapons, warframes, and companions
  • Stronger weapons drop from later areas in the game
  • Better mods tend to drop from higher level areas

That's not to say Warframe is perfect. In fact, it has many issues. A few of those are:

  • The game's tutorial needs a serious rework. A new one has been promised, but hasn't been implemented yet
  • The game doesn't give you enough information in general. Forums, Reddit, and the Warframe wiki help a lot with that though
  • The game has some free-to-play trappings:
    • The game is constantly trying to sell warframes and weapons to you for the game's real money currency (platinum) despite everything being earnable in game
    • You have a very limited inventory for warframes, weapons, and companions. The only way to increase this inventory size is by spending the game's real money currency
  • New content tends to be a bit buggy at first. This is particularly clear in Empyrean/Railjack right now as it launched just over a week before DE left for winter break.

Overall, this game is fun as long as you know what you're getting yourself into... and if you have friends to play the game with.
