I love this game. It's my favorite deckbuilder to come out this year, and I played Balatro. I love the character classes and the cards and the art direction, I love the monsters, and I love the fishing.

I really wish the soundtrack was released somewhere, for I would listen to it a lot!

yes i would recommend crosscode. I think it has a very fun story that questions the morality of a game designer who programs a consciousness into an AI. A lot of people don't like the puzzles but I do, I think they're fun to solve even if there are a lot of them. As a singleplayer mmo, one of the first in the genre, a lot of characters do talk like real people, and more importantly, the tone and their characters are consistent! I really love crosscode.

edit: I'm seeing a lot of people complaining that Melinoe is not a good successor to Zagreus and/or that Melinoe has no personality. 1. I don't think these people ever played the early access for Hades 1, in which Zagreus had almost no personality because he didn't have (say it with me now) 2. A character arc! Melinoe has a character arc and reacts to people she meets and things she feels in a way that is consistent to her character. Any whining about her character is unjustified considering her arc is not yet finished, and where she starts the game is not where she will end it. Also I like the olympic update. The slow time thing was ok but it bogged the pace of the game down, and I use axe mostly so I find that the omega skills are still strong enough without it. Also I love Prometheus I think his boss fight is really good, the memory game is challenging but fair, and seeing a brawler/kickboxer archetype for a boss fills me with joy. He's my favorite boss in the game, sorry.

For me, in its current state I give this game a 4/5. I think I have a pretty solid understanding of the game, I beat Chronos once, the surface floor 2 boss a few times, i've unlocked all arcana, done most of the incantations, and unlocked every keepsake. Another thing I'd like to add before I begin is that I basically only use the axe. It's far and away the most fun weapon for me (I used excalibur in Hades 1) and after playing around with it a lot I quite like how it feels like an extension of that weapon.

As it stands Hades 2 is really fun. I think the characters are different enough to their Hades 1 counterparts to be interesting while still having their own personality traits, and the new character interactions are just as good. Melinoe is a great stand-in for Zagreus, and I think she carries a lot of the same qualities: sense of responsibility, honor, and dedication to family and friends. These were the traits that Zag carried himself in the first game and it's nice to see Melinoe carry the torch here. Hecate is also a great stand in for Nyx, but something that I really hope for is a musical character being added to the Crossroads. I've come to miss Orpheus singing in between runs more so than before. I also hope to see more characters in the crossroads interact with characters in the world. Dora and Moros interact, Echo and Narcissus have a fraught relationship, but they're both in the world and you don't always get to go to their respective areas. No complaints on the story or characters front, but the previous sentence does lead into my first and major problem with the game: grinding.

There are a lot of resources in Hades 2. I'm talking, like, too many. It's taken me about 22 hours to get most of the major incantations so far, but I'm still missing a few. There were a few too many times where I went to the surface to get something, only to realize that I also needed something else and did not have the right tool to get that resource, meaning I would have to do another surface run in order to get the thing I needed. It just feels really limiting, having to pick and choose between which resources I want to collect. I would like to compare this system to my favorite game, Monster Hunter World. In MHW, you always have the tools you need to pick up any miscellaneous resource. Mining deposit? You have a pickaxe. Fishing hole? You have a fishing rod. Cool creature? You have a capture net. These tools don't take up any space in your item pouch and you always have them on you when you go on a quest or expedition, meaning you always have the means to collect any resource you can find. I realize previous iterations of monster hunter required you to bring pickaxes and fishing rods, and they had durability as well, but in world and rise Capcom decided to remove that feature, because it's kind of annoying to have to pick and choose. It feels artificial, like the game time is inflated because I have to pick a different tool to get the resources I need.

My last major qualm with the game is artificial difficulty. Look, I know that for story reasons you can't be as strong when you first start the game as you are when you get a lot of resources and a strong basecamp. I know, it's a roguelite for a reason. However, a friend of mine got to a late point in a run relatively early on in the game, and a character straight up cursed him to take 50% more damage for the entire rest of the run. I don't mean to speak for him because I don't know how bothered he actually was by it, but I thought that was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It's ok to make the game harder early on, but to make it virtually impossible unless you can play flawlessly? That is some crap.

Overall the game is fun, some of the weapons feel worse than others but it was the same way in Hades 1, where I basically only used the sword for a few hundred runs. I hope to see Supergiant improve the aspects of the game that I have problems with. I also know about companions and how they help alleviate the grinding problem, but it's kind of a band aid solution. A neat fix for the grinding problem would be making it so companions could take two tools, of your choosing! and then limit the amount that they have. 3/5 tools (total when the full game comes out, there's currently one tool missing) is far better than 2/5 for feeling like making genuine progress. Thanks for reading if you made it this far!

edit: also want to add that the soundtrack is awesome again and despite what some people have been saying in other reviews, I quite like the darker atmosphere of this game, it really pops. Some parts almost remind me of the world of Berserk (eternal nighttime), and I wonder if some aspects of the game were inspired by that.

edit 2: they just updated the game and fixed basically everything I didnt like. Awesome.

Mortal Sin is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome. I got it a long time ago when it first launched into early access and its unbelievable to see the progress its made, without losing any of its original charm. The game is brilliant. I put it with the likes of games like ultrakill as one of the most exciting games in early access. Can't wait to see what's next!

This game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blows. I've beat it not once, not twice, but 3 FLIPPING TIMES! And each time, I failed the final segment and was sent allllll the way back to the start. I can't say it's not insanely frustrating and, I would add, insanely hard, but I can't stop thinking about it. I want to listen to the soundtrack whenever I get the chance, and the game just oozes style out of every ounce of its being. I can't say I'm not mad, but I think it's because this is one of the best games I have ever played and more than anything, I just want to beat it. I will update this review when that day comes.

Edit: 4 times.

Edit: 5.

Edit: 6. I'm dying.

Edit: 8. This is the best worst game I've ever played.

Roboquest is the best first person roguelite ever made. At least it's my favorite so that's gotta count for something. I was skeptical that the full reset would be necessary but I actually really liked it, and it meant that me and my friends were on the same playing field. I love it, and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in an FPS movement shooter
